Weak correlation effects in the Ising model on triangular-tiled hyperbolic lattices

The Ising model is studied on a series of hyperbolic two-dimensional lattices which are formed by tessellation of triangles on negatively curved surfaces. In order to treat the hyperbolic lattices, we propose a generalization of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method using a recursive construction of asymmetric transfer matrices. Studying the phase transition, the mean-field universality is captured by means of a precise analysis of thermodynamic functions. The correlation functions and the density matrix spectra always decay exponentially even at the transition point, whereas power law behavior characterizes criticality on the Euclidean flat geometry. We confirm the absence of a finite correlation length in the limit of infinite negative Gaussian curvature.

Spherical Deformation for One-dimensional Quantum Systems

System-size dependence of the ground-state energy E^N is investigated for N-site one-dimensional (1D) quantum systems with open boundary condition, where the interaction strength decreases towards the both ends of the system. For the spinless Fermions on the 1D lattice we have considered, it is shown that the finite-size correction to the energy per site, which is defined as E^N / N - \lim_{N \to \infty} E^N / N, is of the order of 1 / N^2 when the reduction factor of the interaction is expressed by a sinusoidal function. We discuss the origin of this fast convergence from the view point of the spherical geometry.

Transverse Field Ising Model Under Hyperbolic Deformation

Ground state of the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model is investigated under the hyperbolic deformation, where the energy scale of j-th bond is proportional to the function \cosh ( j λ) that contains a parameter λ. Although the Hamiltonian is position dependent, the ground state is nearly uniform and finitely correlated. We observe the energy cross over between the ordered and disordered state with respect to the transverse field. The model shows first order phase transition, and the discontinuities in the magnetization and entanglement entropy at the transition point detect the Ising universality.

Phase Transition of the Ising model on a Hyperbolic Lattice

The matrix product structure is considered on a regular lattice in the hyperbolic plane. The phase transition of the Ising model is observed on the hyperbolic $(5, 4)$ lattice by means of the corner-transfer-matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method. Calculated correlation length is always finite even at the transition temperature, where mean-field like behavior is observed. The entanglement entropy is also always finite.

A Classical Background for the Wave Function Prediction in the Infinite System DMRG Method

We report a physical background of the wave function prediction in the infinite system density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, from the view point of two-dimensional vertex model, a typical lattice model in statistical mechanics. Singular value decomposition applied to rectangular corner transfer matrices naturally draws matrix product representation for the maximal eigenvector of the row-to-row transfer matrix. The wave function prediction can be expressed as the insertion of an approximate half-column transfer matrix. This insertion process is in accordance with the scheme proposed by McCulloch recently.

Phase transition of clock models on hyperbolic lattice studied by corner transfer matrix renormalization group method

Two-dimensional ferromagnetic N-state clock models are studied on a hyperbolic lattice represented by tessellation of pentagons. The lattice lies on the hyperbolic plane with a constant negative scalar curvature. We observe the spontaneous magnetization, the internal energy, and the specific heat at the center of sufficiently large systems, where the fixed boundary conditions are imposed, for the cases N>=3 up to N=30. The model with N=3, which is equivalent to the 3-state Potts model on the hyperbolic lattice, exhibits the first order phase transition. A mean-field like phase transition of the second order is observed for the cases N>=4. When N>=5 we observe the Schottky type specific heat below the transition temperature, where its peak hight at low temperatures scales as N^{-2}. From these facts we conclude that the phase transition of classical XY-model deep inside the hyperbolic lattices is not of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Ising model on hyperbolic lattice studied by corner transfer matrix renormalization group method

We study two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a series of regular lattices, which are represented as the tessellation of polygons with p>=5 sides, such as pentagons (p=5), hexagons (p=6), etc. Such lattices are on hyperbolic planes, which have constant negative scalar curvatures. We calculate critical temperatures and scaling exponents by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. As a result, the mean-field like phase transition is observed for all the cases p>=5. Convergence of the calculated transition temperatures with respect to p is investigated towards the limit p->infinity, where the system coincides with the Ising model on the Bethe lattice.

Tunneling of interacting fermions in 1D systems

Using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation for spinless electrons at zero temperature, we study tunneling of the interacting electron gas through a single delta-barrier in a finite one-dimensional (1D) wire connected to contacts. Our results exhibit features known from correlated many-body models. In particular, the conductance decays with the wire length as $\propto L^{-2α}$, where the power $α$ is universal. We also show that a similar result for a wire conductance can be extracted from the persistent current (I) through the delta-barrier in a 1D ring, where it is known that I \propto L^{-1-α}$.

Coherent transport of interacting electrons through a single scatterer

Using the self-consistent Hartree-Fock method, we calculate the persistent current of weakly-interacting spinless electrons in a one-dimensional ring containing a single delta-barrier. We find that the persistent current decays with the system length (L) asymptotically like $I \propto L^{-1-α}$, where $α> 0$ is the power depending only on the electron-electron interaction. We also simulate tunneling of the weakly-interacting one-dimensional electron gas through a single delta-barrier in a finite wire biased by contacts. We find that the Landauer conductance decays with the system length asymptotically like $L^{-2α}$. The power laws $L^{-1-α}$ and $L^{-2α}$ have so far been observed only in correlated models. Their existence in the Hartree-Fock model is thus surprising.

Tunneling of interacting one-dimensional electrons through a single scatterer: Luttinger liquid behavior in the Hartree-Fock model

We study tunneling of weakly-interacting spinless electrons at zero temperature through a single delta-barrier in one-dimensional wires and rings of finite lengths. Our numerical calculations are based on the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation, nevertheless, our results exhibit features known from correlated many-body models. In particular, the transmission in a wire of length L at the Fermi level is proportional to $L^{-2α}$ with the universal power $α$ (depending on the electron-electron interaction only, not on the strength of the delta-barrier). Similarly, the persistent current in a ring of the circumference $L$ obeys the rule $I\propto L^{-1-α}$ known from the Luttinger liquid and Hubbard models. We show that the transmission at the Fermi level in the wire is related to the persistent current in the ring at the magnetic flux h/4e.

Possible persistent current in a ring made of the perfect crystalline insulator

A mesoscopic conducting ring pierced by magnetic flux is known to support the persistent electron current. Here we propose possibility of the persistent current in the ring made of the perfect crystalline insulator. We consider a ring-shaped lattice of one-dimensional "atoms" with a single energy level. We express the Bloch states in the lattice as a linear combination of atomic orbitals. The discrete energy level splits into the energy band which serves as a simple model of the valence band. We show that the insulating ring (with the valence band fully filled by electrons) supports a nonzero persistent current, because each atomic orbital overlaps with its own tail when making one loop around the ring. In the tight-binding limit only the neighboring orbitals overlap. In that limit the persistent current at full filling becomes zero which is a standard result.

Persistent current of correlated electrons in mesoscopic ring with impurity

The persistent current of correlated electrons in a continuous one-dimensional ring with a single scatterer is calculated by solving the many-body Schrodinger equation for several tens of electrons interacting via the electron-electron (e-e) interaction of finite range. The problem is solved by the configuration-interaction (CI) and diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods. The CI and DMC results are in good agreement. In both cases, the persistent current $I$ as a function of the ring length $L$ exhibits the asymptotic dependence $I \propto L^{-1-α}$ typical of the Luttinger liquid, where the power $α$ depends only on the e-e interaction. The numerical values of $α$ agree with the known formula of the renormalisation-group theory.

Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group Method Applied to the Ising Model on the Hyperbolic Plane

Critical behavior of the Ising model is investigated at the center of large scale finite size systems, where the lattice is represented as the tiling of pentagons. The system is on the hyperbolic plane, and the recursive structure of the lattice makes it possible to apply the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. From the calculated nearest neighbor spin correlation function and the spontaneous magnetization, it is concluded that the phase transition of this model is mean-field like. One parameter deformation of the corner Hamiltonian on the hyperbolic plane is discussed.

Modulation of Local Magnetization in two-dimensional Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising model

The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied in two dimensions at finite temperature using the density matrix renormalization group. The model exhibits phase transition of the second-order between the antiphase in low temperature and the modulated phase in high temperature. Observing the domain wall free energy, we confirm that the modulation period in high-temperature side is well explained by the free-fermion picture.

Product Wave Function Renormalization Group: construction from the matrix product point of view

We present a construction of a matrix product state (MPS) that approximates the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of a transfer matrix T, for the purpose of rapidly performing the infinite system density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method applied to two-dimensional classical lattice models. We use the fact that the largest-eigenvalue eigenvector of T can be approximated by a state vector created from the upper or lower half of a finite size cluster. Decomposition of the obtained state vector into the MPS gives a way of extending the MPS, at the system size increment process in the infinite system DMRG algorithm. As a result, we successfully give the physical interpretation of the product wave function renormalization group (PWFRG) method, and obtain its appropriate initial condition.

Critical Point of a Symmetric Vertex Model

We study a symmetric vertex model, that allows 10 vertex configurations, by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG), a variant of DMRG. The model has a critical point that belongs to the Ising universality class.

Estimation of the magnetic critical exponent by Tensor Product Variational Approach

A variational problem for three-dimensional (3D) classical lattice models is considered with trial state given by two-dimensional (2D) uniform product of local variational weights. This approach, the tensor product variational approach (TPVA), has been applied to 3D classical models (the Ising and the Potts models). We consider a way of estimating the magnetic critical exponent $β$ for the simple 3D Ising model assuming a functional form of the spontaneous magnetization in the off critical region, where the TPVA provides reliable data.

Phase diagram of the 3D Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising model

The three-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by a modified tensor product variational approach (TPVA). A global phase diagram is constructed with numerous commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures. The devil's stairs behavior for the model is confirmed. The wavelength of the spin modulated phases increases to infinity at the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase. Widths of the commensurate phases are considerably narrower than those calculated by mean-field approximations.
