Multidimensional transition fronts for Fisher-KPP reactions

We study entire solutions to homogeneous reaction-diffusion equations in several dimensions with Fisher-KPP reactions. Any entire solution $0 2\sqrt{f'(0)}\,$.} \] When $f$ is $C^2$ and concave, our main result provides an almost complete characterization of transition fronts as well as transition solutions with bounded width within this class of solutions.

Local regularity for the modified SQG patch equation

We study the patch dynamics on the whole plane and on the half-plane for a family of active scalars called modified SQG equations. These involve a parameter $α$ which appears in the power of the kernel in their Biot-Savart laws and describes the degree of regularity of the equation. The values $α=0$ and $α=\frac 12$ correspond to the 2D Euler and SQG equations, respectively. We establish here local-in-time regularity for these models, for all $α\in(0,\frac 12)$ on the whole plane and for all small $α>0$ on the half-plane. We use the latter result in [16], where we show existence of regular initial data on the half-plane which lead to a finite time singularity.

Finite time singularity formation for the modified SQG patch equation

It is well known that the incompressible Euler equations in two dimensions have globally regular solutions. The inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation has a Biot-Savart law which is one derivative less regular than in the Euler case, and the question of global regularity for its solutions is still open. We study here the patch dynamics in the half-plane for a family of active scalars which interpolates between these two equations, via a parameter $α\in[0,\frac 12]$ appearing in the kernels of their Biot-Savart laws. The values $α=0$ and $α=\frac 12$ correspond to the 2D Euler and SQG cases, respectively. We prove global in time regularity for the 2D Euler patch model, even if the patches initially touch the boundary of the half-plane. On the other hand, for any sufficiently small $α>0$, we exhibit initial data which lead to a singularity in finite time. Thus, these results show a phase transition in the behavior of solutions to these equations, and provide a rigorous foundation for classifying the 2D Euler equations as critical.

Existence and non-existence of transition fronts for bistable and ignition reactions

We study reaction-diffusion equations in one spatial dimension and with general (space- or time-) inhomogeneous mixed bistable-ignition reactions. For those satisfying a simple quantitative hypothesis, we prove existence and uniqueness of transition fronts, as well as convergence of "typical" solutions to the unique transition front (the existence part even extends to mixed bistable-ignition-monostable reactions). These results also hold for all pure ignition reactions without any other hypotheses, but not for all pure bistable reactions. In fact, we find examples of either spatially or temporally periodic pure bistable reactions (independent of the other space-time variable) for which we can prove non-existence of transition fronts. These are the first such results for periodic media which are non-degenerate in a natural sense, and the spatially periodic examples also prove a conjecture from \cite{DHZ}.

Transition fronts for inhomogeneous Fisher-KPP reactions and non-local diffusion

We prove existence of and construct transition fronts for a class of reaction- diffusion equations with spatially inhomogeneous Fisher-KPP type reactions and non-local diffusion. Our approach is based on finding these solutions as perturbations of appropriate solutions to the linearization of the PDE at zero. Our work extends a method introduced by one of us to study such questions in the case of classical diffusion.

Exponential growth of the vorticity gradient for the Euler equation on the torus

We prove that there are solutions to the Euler equation on the torus with $C^{1,α}$ vorticity and smooth except at one point such that the vorticity gradient grows in $L^\infty$ at least exponentially as $t\to\infty$. The same result is shown to hold for the vorticity Hessian and smooth solutions. Our proofs use a version of a recent result by Kiselev and Sverak.

Mixing and Un-mixing by Incompressible Flows

We consider the questions of efficient mixing and un-mixing by incompressible flows which satisfy periodic, no-flow, or no-slip boundary conditions on a square. Under the uniform-in-time constraint $\|\nabla u(\cdot,t)\|_p\leq 1$ we show that any function can be mixed to scale $ε$ in time $O(|\logε|^{1+ν_p})$, with $ν_p=0$ for $p<\tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2$ and $ν_p\leq \tfrac 13$ for $p\geq \tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2$. Known lower bounds show that this rate is optimal for $p\in(1,\tfrac{3+\sqrt 5}2)$. We also show that any set which is mixed to scale $ε$ but not much more than that can be un-mixed to a rectangle of the same area (up to a small error) in time $O(|\logε|^{2-1/p})$. Both results hold with scale-independent finite times if the constraint on the flow is changed to $\|u(\cdot,t)\|_{\dot W^{s,p}}\leq 1$ with some $s<1$. The constants in all our results are independent of the mixed functions and sets.

Blow up for the 2D Euler Equation on Some Bounded Domains

We find a smooth solution of the 2D Euler equation on a bounded domain which exists and is unique in a natural class locally in time, but blows up in finite time in the sense of its vorticity losing continuity. The domain's boundary is smooth except at two points, which are interior cusps.

Propagation of Reactions in Inhomogeneous Media

Consider reaction-diffusion equation $u_t=Δu + f(x,u)$ with $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and general inhomogeneous ignition reaction $f\ge 0$ vanishing at $u=0,1$. Typical solutions $0\le u\le 1$ transition from $0$ to $1$ as time progresses, and we study them in the region where this transition occurs. Under fairly general qualitative hypotheses on $f$ we show that in dimensions $d\le 3$, the Hausdorff distance of the super-level sets $\{u\geε\}$ and $\{u\ge 1-ε\}$ remains uniformly bounded in time for each $ε\in(0,1)$. Thus, $u$ remains uniformly in time close to the characteristic function of $\{u\ge\tfrac 12\}$ in the sense of Hausdorff distance of super-level sets. We also show that $\{u\ge\tfrac 12\}$ expands with average speed (over any long enough time interval) between the two spreading speeds corresponding to any $x$-independent lower and upper bounds on $f$. On the other hand, these results turn out to be false in dimensions $d\ge 4$, at least without further quantitative hypotheses on $f$. The proof for $d\le 3$ is based on showing that as the solution propagates, small values of $u$ cannot escape far ahead of values close to 1. The proof for $d\ge 4$ involves construction of a counter-example for which this fails. Such results were before known for $d=1$ but are new for general non-periodic media in dimensions $d\ge 2$ (some are also new for homogeneous and periodic media). They extend in a somewhat weaker sense to monostable, bistable, and mixed reaction types, as well as to transitions between general equilibria $u^-<u^+$ of the PDE, and to solutions not necessarily satisfying $u^-\le u\le u^+$.

Transition fronts for inhomogeneous monostable reaction-diffusion equations via linearization at zero

We prove existence of transition fronts for a large class of reaction-diffusion equations in one dimension, with inhomogeneous monostable reactions. We construct these as perturbations of corresponding front-like solutions to the linearization of the PDE at $u=0$. While a close relationship of the solutions to the two PDEs has been well known and exploited for KPP reactions (and our method is an extension of such ideas from [15]), to the best of our knowledge this is the first time such an approach has been used in the construction and study of fronts for non-KPP monostable reactions.

On the loss of continuity for super-critical drift-diffusion equations

We show that there exist solutions of drift-diffusion equations in two dimensions with divergence-free super-critical drifts, that become discontinuous in finite time. We consider classical as well as fractional diffusion. However, in the case of classical diffusion and time-independent drifts we prove that solutions satisfy a modulus of continuity depending only on the local $L^1$ norm of the drift, which is a super-critical quantity.

Speed-up of combustion fronts in shear flows

This paper is concerned with the analysis of speed-up of reaction-diffusion-advection traveling fronts in infinite cylinders with periodic boundary conditions. The advection is a shear flow with a large amplitude and the reaction is nonnegative, with either positive or zero ignition temperature. The unique or minimal speeds of the traveling fronts are proved to be asymptotically linear in the flow amplitude as the latter goes to infinity, solving an open problem from \cite{b}. The asymptotic growth rate is characterized explicitly as the unique or minimal speed of traveling fronts for a limiting degenerate problem, and the convergence of the regular traveling fronts to the degenerate ones is proved for positive ignition temperatures under an additional H{ö}rmander-type condition on the flow.

The Harnack inequality for a class of degenerate elliptic operators

We prove a Harnack inequality for distributional solutions to a type of degenerate elliptic PDEs in $N$ dimensions. The differential operators in question are related to the Kolmogorov operator, made up of the Laplacian in the last $N-1$ variables, a first-order term corresponding to a shear flow in the direction of the first variable, and a bounded measurable potential term. The first-order coefficient is a smooth function of the last $N-1$ variables and its derivatives up to certain order do not vanish simultaneously at any point, making the operators in question hypoelliptic.

Transition Fronts in Inhomogeneous Fisher-KPP Reaction-Diffusion Equations

We use a new method in the study of Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equations to prove existence of transition fronts for inhomogeneous KPP-type non-linearities in one spatial dimension. We also obtain new estimates on entire solutions of some KPP reaction-diffusion equations in several spatial dimensions. Our method is based on the construction of sub- and super-solutions to the non-linear PDE from solutions of its linearization at zero.

Existence and Non-existence of Fisher-KPP Transition Fronts

We consider Fisher-KPP-type reaction-diffusion equations with spatially inhomogeneous reaction rates. We show that a sufficiently strong localized inhomogeneity may prevent existence of transition-front-type global in time solutions while creating a global in time bump-like solution. This is the first example of a medium in which no reaction-diffusion transition front exists. A weaker localized inhomogeneity leads to existence of transition fronts but only in a finite range of speeds. These results are in contrast with both Fisher-KPP reactions in homogeneous media as well as ignition-type reactions in inhomogeneous media.

On Divergence-free Drifts

We investigate the validity and failure of Liouville theorems and Harnack inequalities for parabolic and elliptic operators with low regularity coefficients. We are particularly interested in operators of the form $\partial_t - Δ+b\cdot\nabla$ and $-Δ+b\cdot\nabla$ with a divergence-free drift $b$. We prove the Liouville theorem and Harnack inequality when $b\in L_\infty(BMO^{-1})$ resp. $b\in BMO^{-1}$ and provide a counterexample to such results demonstrating sharpness of our conditions on the drift. Our results generalize to divergence-form operators with an elliptic symmetric part and a BMO skew-symmetric part. We also prove the existence of a modulus of continuity for solutions to the elliptic problem in two dimensions, depending on the non-scale-invariant norm $\|b\|_{L_1}$. In three dimensions, on the other hand, bounded solutions with $L_1$ drifts may be discontinuous.

Exit times of diffusions with incompressible drift

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ be a bounded domain and for $x\inΩ$ let $τ(x)$ be the expected exit time from $Ω$ of a diffusing particle starting at $x$ and advected by an incompressible flow $u$. We are interested in the question which flows maximize $\|τ\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$, that is, they are most efficient in the creation of hotspots inside $Ω$. Surprisingly, among all simply connected domains in two dimensions, the discs are the only ones for which the zero flow $u\equiv 0$ maximises $\|τ\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$. We also show that in any dimension, among all domains with a fixed volume and all incompressible flows on them, $\|τ\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$ is maximized by the zero flow on the ball.

Reaction-Diffusion Front Speed Enhancement by Flows

We study flow-induced enhancement of the speed of pulsating traveling fronts for reaction-diffusion equations, and quenching of reaction by fluid flows. We prove, for periodic flows in two dimensions and any combustion-type reaction, that the front speed is proportional to the square root of the (homogenized) effective diffusivity of the flow. We show that this result does not hold in three and more dimensions. We also prove conjectures from [1,3,11] for cellular flows, concerning the rate of speed-up of fronts and the minimal flow amplitude necessary to quench solutions with initial data of a fixed (large) size
