Topological André-Quillen homology for cellular commutative $S$-algebras

Topological André-Quillen homology for commutative $S$-algebras was introduced by Basterra following work of Kriz, and has been intensively studied by several authors. In this paper we discuss it as a homology theory on CW $S$-algebras and apply it to obtain results on minimal atomic $p$-local $S$-algebras which generalise those of Baker and May for $p$-local spectra and simply connected spaces. We exhibit some new examples of minimal atomic $S$-algebras.

Isogenies of supersingular elliptic curves over finite fields and operations in elliptic cohomology

We investigate stable operations in supersingular elliptic cohomology using isogenies of supersingular elliptic curves over finite fields. Our main results provide a framework in which we give a conceptually simple proof of an elliptic cohomology version of the Morava change of rings theorem and also gives models for explicit stable operations in terms of isogenies and morphisms in certain enlarged isogeny categories. We relate our work to that of G. Robert on the Hecke algebra structure of the ring of supersingular modular forms.

Quasisymmetric functions from a topological point of view

It is well-known that the homology of the classifying space of the unitary group is isomorphic to the ring of symmetric functions, Symm. We offer the cohomology of the loop space of the suspension of the infinite complex projective space as a topological model for the ring of quasisymmetric functions, QSymm. We exploit standard results from topology to shed light on some of the algebraic properties of QSymm. In particular, we reprove the Ditters conjecture. We investigate a product on the loop space that gives rise to an algebraic structure which generalizes the Witt vector structure in the cohomology of BU. The canonical Thom spectrum over the loops on the suspension of BU(1) is highly non-commutative and we study some of its features, including the homology of its topological Hochschild homology spectrum.

Uniqueness of $E_\infty$ structures for connective covers

We refine our earlier work on the existence and uniqueness of E-infinity structures on K-theoretic spectra to show that at each prime p, the connective Adams summand has an essentially unique structure as a commutative S-algebra. For the p-completion we show that the McClure-Staffeldt model for it is equivalent as an E-infinity ring spectrum to the connective cover of the periodic Adams summand. We establish Bousfield equivalence between the connective cover, c(E_n), of the Lubin-Tate spectrum E_n and BP and propose c(E_n) as an E-infinity approximation to the latter.

Realizability of algebraic Galois extensions by strictly commutative ring spectra

We discuss some of the basic ideas of Galois theory for commutative S-algebras originally formulated by John Rognes. We restrict attention to the case of finite Galois groups and to global Galois extensions. We describe parts of the general framework developed by Rognes. Central roles are played by the notion of strong duality and a trace mapping constructed by Greenlees and May in the context of generalized Tate cohomology. We give some examples where algebraic data on coefficient rings ensures strong topological consequences. We consider the issue of passage from algebraic Galois extensions to topological ones applying obstruction theories of Robinson and Goerss-Hopkins to produce topological models for algebraic Galois extensions and the necessary morphisms of commutative S-algebras. Examples such as the complex K-theory spectrum as a KO-algebra indicate that more exotic phenomena occur in the topological setting. We show how in certain cases topological abelian Galois extensions are classified by the same Harrison groups as algebraic ones and this leads to computable Harrison groups for such spectra. We end by proving an analogue of Hilbert's theorem 90 for the units associated with a Galois extension.

On the cooperation algebra of the connective Adams summand

The aim of this paper is to gain explicit information about the multiplicative structure of l_*l, where l is the connective Adams summand. Our approach differs from Kane's or Lellmann's because our main technical tool is the MU-based Kuenneth spectral sequence. We prove that the algebra structure on l_*l is inherited from the multiplication on a Koszul resolution of l_*BP.

$Γ$-cohomology of rings of numerical polynomials and $E_\infty$ structures on K-theory

We investigate Gamma-cohomology of some commutative cooperation algebras E_*E associated with certain periodic cohomology theories. For KU and E(1), the Adams summand at a prime p, and for KO we show that Gamma-cohomology vanishes above degree 1. As these cohomology groups are the obstruction groups in the obstruction theory developed by Alan Robinson we deduce that these spectra admit unique E infinity structures. As a consequence we obtain an E infinity structure for the connective Adams summand. For the Johnson-Wilson spectrum E(n) with n > 0 we establish the existence of a unique E infinity structure for its I_n-adic completion.

Invertible modules for commutative $\mathbb{S}$-algebras with residue fields

The aim of this note is to understand under which conditions invertible modules over a commutative S-algebra in the sense of Elmendorf, Kriz, Mandell and May give rise to elements in the algebraic Picard group of invertible graded modules over the coefficient ring by taking homotopy groups. If a connective commutative S-algebra R has coherent localizations (R_*)_m for every maximal ideal m in R_*, then for every invertible R-module U, U_* is an invertible graded R_*-module. In some non-connective cases we can carry the result over under the additional assumption that the commutative S-algebra has `residue fields' for all maximal ideals m in R_* if the global dimension of R_* is small or if R is 2-periodic with underlying Noetherian complete local regular ring R_0.

Topological Hochschild cohomology and generalized Morita equivalence

We explore two constructions in homotopy category with algebraic precursors in the theory of noncommutative rings and homological algebra, namely the Hochschild cohomology of ring spectra and Morita theory. The present paper provides an extension of the algebraic theory to include the case when $M$ is not necessarily a progenerator. Our approach is complementary to recent work of Dwyer and Greenlees and of Schwede and Shipley. A central notion of noncommutative ring theory related to Morita equivalence is that of central separable or Azumaya algebras. For such an Azumaya algebra A, its Hochschild cohomology HH^*(A,A) is concentrated in degree 0 and is equal to the center of A. We introduce a notion of topological Azumaya algebra and show that in the case when the ground S-algebra R is an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of a commutative ring this notion specializes to classical Azumaya algebras. A canonical example of a topological Azumaya R-algebra is the endomorphism R-algebra F_R(M,M) of a finite cell R-module. We show that the spectrum of mod 2 topological K-theory KU/2 is a nontrivial topological Azumaya algebra over the 2-adic completion of the K-theory spectrum widehat{KU}_2. This leads to the determination of THH(KU/2,KU/2), the topological Hochschild cohomology of KU/2. As far as we know this is the first calculation of THH(A,A) for a noncommutative S-algebra A.

On the Adams Spectral Sequence for R-modules

We discuss the Adams Spectral Sequence for R-modules based on commutative localized regular quotient ring spectra over a commutative S-algebra R in the sense of Elmendorf, Kriz, Mandell, May and Strickland. The formulation of this spectral sequence is similar to the classical case and the calculation of its E_2-term involves the cohomology of certain `brave new Hopf algebroids' E^R_*E. In working out the details we resurrect Adams' original approach to Universal Coefficient Spectral Sequences for modules over an R ring spectrum. We show that the Adams Spectral Sequence for S_R based on a commutative localized regular quotient R ring spectrum E=R/I[X^{-1}] converges to the homotopy of the E-nilpotent completion pi_*hat{L}^R_ES_R=R_*[X^{-1}]^hat_{I_*}. We also show that when the generating regular sequence of I_* is finite, hatL^R_ES_R is equivalent to L^R_ES_R, the Bousfield localization of S_R with respect to E-theory. The spectral sequence here collapses at its E_2-term but it does not have a vanishing line because of the presence of polynomial generators of positive cohomological degree. Thus only one of Bousfield's two standard convergence criteria applies here even though we have this equivalence. The details involve the construction of an I-adic tower R/I <-- R/I^2 <-- ... <-- R/I^s <-- R/I^{s+1} <-- ... whose homotopy limit is hatL^R_ES_R. We describe some examples for the motivating case R=MU.
