Interactive and accessible quantum key distribution modules for introducing students to quantum science and engineering

Teaching key concepts in quantum information science and technology benefits from hands-on activities that can engage students at all levels, especially high-school and undergraduate students. In this paper, we report on an educational kit for student exploration of quantum key distribution (QKD) via optical analogies that provides an affordable and highly interactive role-playing experience for students with minimal abstraction and direct connections to applications, key quantum concepts like superposition and measurement uncertainty, and student's pre-existing knowledge like light polarization. Manual and automated versions of the kit are detailed, as well as feedback from workshops with high-school students, undergraduates, and educators.

Data Preservation in High Energy Physics: Global Report 2026

This document summarizes the contributions to the 5th DPHEP workshop March 5-6, 2026, CERN, and reflects the advancements since 2024, as well as future milestones and tendencies. Impressive progress in HEP data preservation is observed. Legacy data revival was showcased through successful reanalysis of archived data using contemporary methods, demonstrating the long-term scientific value of preservation. Sustainability challenges were noted, emphasizing the need for long-term funding and institutional support to maintain data preservation infrastructure, particularly for legacy experiments transitioning to archival modes. Innovative transverse projects display constant progress towards common technologies for a robust and transferrable DP. In particular, there is a clear shift toward automation, with increasing use of AI and machine learning for data curation, metadata extraction, and workflow optimization. Open science momentum is growing, with wider adoption of FAIR principles and open data policies, and experiments committing to public releases.

Learning to generate one-sentence biographies from Wikidata

We investigate the generation of one-sentence Wikipedia biographies from facts derived from Wikidata slot-value pairs. We train a recurrent neural network sequence-to-sequence model with attention to select facts and generate textual summaries. Our model incorporates a novel secondary objective that helps ensure it generates sentences that contain the input facts. The model achieves a BLEU score of 41, improving significantly upon the vanilla sequence-to-sequence model and scoring roughly twice that of a simple template baseline. Human preference evaluation suggests the model is nearly as good as the Wikipedia reference. Manual analysis explores content selection, suggesting the model can trade the ability to infer knowledge against the risk of hallucinating incorrect information.

Post-edit Analysis of Collective Biography Generation

Text generation is increasingly common but often requires manual post-editing where high precision is critical to end users. However, manual editing is expensive so we want to ensure this effort is focused on high-value tasks. And we want to maintain stylistic consistency, a particular challenge in crowd settings. We present a case study, analysing human post-editing in the context of a template-based biography generation system. An edit flow visualisation combined with manual characterisation of edits helps identify and prioritise work for improving end-to-end efficiency and accuracy.

We report on an exploratory analysis of Emoji Dick, a project that leverages crowdsourcing to translate Melville's Moby Dick into emoji. This distinctive use of emoji removes textual context, and leads to a varying translation quality. In this paper, we use statistical word alignment and part-of-speech tagging to explore how people use emoji. Despite these simple methods, we observed differences in token and part-of-speech distributions. Experiments also suggest that semantics are preserved in the translation, and repetition is more common in emoji.

Observation of a new χ_b state at ATLAS and a new Ξ_b baryon at CMS

Two recent observations of new b hadrons in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. The ATLAS collaboration has observed a new state in radiative transitions to Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) and interprets this as the first observation of the χ_b(3P) states. The CMS collaboration has observed a new b baryon decaying to Ξ_b-π+ (plus charge conjugates). This is interpreted as a neutral J^P = 3/2^+ Ξ_b* baryon.
