$K$-type multiplicities in degenerate principal series via Howe duality

Let $K$ be one of the complex classical groups ${\rm O}_k$, ${\rm GL}_k$, or ${\rm Sp}_{2k}$. Let $M \subseteq K$ be the block diagonal embedding ${\rm O}_{k_1} \times \cdots \times {\rm O}_{k_r}$ or ${\rm GL}_{k_1} \times \cdots \times {\rm GL}_{k_r}$ or ${\rm Sp}_{2k_1} \times \cdots \times {\rm Sp}_{2k_r}$, respectively. By using Howe duality and seesaw reciprocity as a unified conceptual framework, we prove a formula for the branching multiplicities from $K$ to $M$ which is expressed as a sum of generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, valid within a certain stable range. By viewing $K$ as the complexification of the maximal compact subgroup $K_{\mathbb{R}}$ of the real group $G_{\mathbb{R}} = {\rm GL}(k,\mathbb{R})$, ${\rm GL}(k, \mathbb{C})$, or ${\rm GL}(k,\mathbb{H})$, respectively, one can interpret our branching multiplicities as $K_{\mathbb{R}}$-type multiplicities in degenerate principal series representations of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. Upon specializing to the minimal $M$, where $k_1 = \cdots = k_r = 1$, we establish a fully general tableau-theoretic interpretation of the branching multiplicities, corresponding to the $K_{\mathbb{R}}$-type multiplicities in the principal series.

Stable Graded Multiplicities for Harmonics on a Cyclic Quiver

We consider Vinberg $\theta$-groups associated to a cyclic quiver on $k$ nodes. Let $K$ be the product of the general linear groups associated to each node. Then $K$ acts naturally on $\oplus \text{Hom}(V_i, V_{i+1})$ and by Vinberg's theory the polynomials are free over the invariants. We therefore consider the harmonics as a representation of $K$, and give a combinatorial formula for the stable graded multiplicity of each $K$-type. A key lemma provides a combinatorial separation of variables that allows us to cancel the invariants and obtain generalized exponents for the harmonics.

Graded multiplicities in the Kostant-Rallis setting

This paper contains two main results. First, we provide combinatorial branching rules for $\mathrm{GL}_n \downarrow \mathrm{O}_n$ and $\mathrm{GL}_{2n} \downarrow \mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ extending the Littlewood restriction rules. Second, we use these branching rules and the combinatorics of $\mathrm{GL}_n$-crystals to derive a formula for the graded multiplicity of a $K$-type in the regular functions on the $K$-nilpotent cone for $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$, and $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{H})$. For $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$, work of Schmid and Vilonen identifies these graded multiplicities with the Hodge $K$-character of the tempered spherical principal series with real infinitesimal character.

Epsilon local rigidity and numerical algebraic geometry

A well-known combinatorial algorithm can decide generic rigidity in the plane by determining if the graph is of Pollaczek-Geiringer-Laman type. Methods from matroid theory have been used to prove other interesting results, again under the assumption of generic configurations. However, configurations arising in applications may not be generic. We present Theorem 5 and its corresponding Algorithm 1 which decide if a configuration is epsilon-locally rigid, a notion we define. A configuration which is epsilon-locally rigid may be locally rigid or flexible, but any continuous deformations remain within a sphere of radius epsilon in configuration space. Deciding epsilon-local rigidity is possible for configurations which are smooth or singular, generic or non-generic. We also present Algorithms 2 and 3 which use numerical algebraic geometry to compute a discrete-time sample of a continuous flex, providing useful visual information for the scientist.

1-Wasserstein Distance on the Standard Simplex

Wasserstein distances provide a metric on a space of probability measures. We consider the space $\Omega$ of all probability measures on the finite set $\chi = \{1, \dots ,n\}$ where $n$ is a positive integer. 1-Wasserstein distance, $W_1(\mu,\nu)$ is a function from $\Omega \times \Omega$ to $[0,\infty)$. This paper derives closed form expressions for the First and Second moment of $W_1$ on $\Omega \times \Omega$ assuming a uniform distribution on $\Omega \times \Omega$.

List Heaps

This paper presents a simple extension of the binary heap, the List Heap. We use List Heaps to demonstrate the idea of adaptive heaps: heaps whose performance is a function of both the size of the problem instance and the disorder of the problem instance. We focus on the presortedness of the input sequence as a measure of disorder for the problem instance. A number of practical applications that rely on heaps deal with input that is not random. Even random input contains presorted subsequences. Devising heaps that exploit this structure may provide a means for improving practical performance. We present some basic empirical tests to support this claim. Additionally, adaptive heaps may provide an interesting direction for theoretical investigation.

How to construct a flag complex with a given face vector

A method that often works for constructing a flag complex with a specified face vector is given. This method can also be adapted to construct a vertex-decomposable (and hence Cohen-Macaulay) flag complex with a specified h-vector.

Flag f-vectors of colored complexes

It is shown that conditions stronger in a certain sense than color-shifting cannot be placed on the class of colored complexes without changing the characterization of the flag f-vectors.

Flag f-vectors of three-colored complexes

The flag f-vectors of three-colored complexes are characterized. This also characterizes the flag h-vectors of balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes of dimension two, as well as the flag h-vectors of balanced shellable complexes of dimension two.

More Constructions for Turán's (3, 4)-Conjecture

For Turán's (3, 4)-conjecture, in the case of n = 3k+1 vertices, (.5)6^{k-1} non-isomorphic complexes are constructed that attain the conjecture. In the case of n = 3k+2 vertices, 6^{k-1} non-isomorphic complexes are constructed that attain the conjecture.

The Charney-Davis conjecture for certain subdivisions of spheres

Notions of sesquiconstructible complexes and odd iterated stellar subdivisions are introduced, and some of their basic properties are verified. The Charney-Davis conjecture is then proven for odd iterated stellar subdivisions of sesquiconstructible balls and spheres.

Face vectors of flag complexes

A conjecture of Kalai and Eckhoff that the face vector of an arbitrary flag complex is also the face vector of some particular balanced complex is verified.
