Determining the superconducting order parameter of UPt$_3$ using scanning tunneling microscopy

Superconductivity, a state in which electrical currents can flow without resistance, occurs because of pairing of electrons into quasiparticles with integer spin $S$. In practically all known superconducting materials, these pairs form a singlet with $S=0$. Finding a material that has triplet pairing, $S=1$, would have profound fundamental and technological implications. UPt$_3$ has been a key candidate material for spin-triplet superconductivity. Because of a lack of direct evidence for the pairing symmetry, the nature of the superconducting pairing remains under debate. Here, we use ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to resolve this question. Our data reveals a zero-bias Andreev bound state within the gap for a surface normal to the $c$-axis of UPt$_3$. The superconducting origin of the features is confirmed through vortex imaging. For triplet pairing, such an Andreev state is fragile against Rashba spin-splitting, whereas for singlet pairing it remains robust, classifying UPt$_3$ as a spin-singlet superconductor with a chiral order parameter.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe$_2$ under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ remains elusive. This puzzle stems from different reported numbers of superconducting transitions at ambient pressure, as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To bring new insights into the superconducting properties of UTe$_2$, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of single crystals under compressive uniaxial stress $σ$ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with $σ$ along $[100]$ and $[110]$ but increases with $σ$ along $[001]$. Aside from its effect on $T_{\rm c}$, we notice that $c$-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity, which we associate with the shift of the zero-pressure resistivity peak at $T^\star \approx 15\, \rm K$ to lower temperatures under stress. Finally, we show that an in-plane shear stress $σ_{xy}$ does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of $σ_{xy}\approx 0.17 \, \rm GPa$. This result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ may be single-component at ambient pressure.

High-Field Superconductivity at an Electronic Topological Transition in URhGe

The emergence of superconductivity at high magnetic fields in URhGe is regarded as a paradigm for new state formation approaching a quantum critical point. Until now, a divergence of the quasiparticle mass at the metamagnetic transition was considered essential for superconductivity to survive at magnetic fields above 30 tesla. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations in URhGe revealing a tiny pocket of heavy quasiparticles that shrinks continuously with increasing magnetic field, and finally disappears at a topological Fermi surface transition close to or at the metamagnetic field. The quasiparticle mass decreases and remains finite, implying that the Fermi velocity vanishes due to the collapse of the Fermi wavevector. This offers a novel explanation for the re-emergence of superconductivity at extreme magnetic fields and makes URhGe the first proven example of a material where magnetic field-tuning of the Fermi surface, rather than quantum criticality alone, governs quantum phase formation.
