Determining neutral fueling response to RMPs in MAST using a multi-reservoir particle balance model and EMC3 EIRENE

The application of certain configurations of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) has been shown to cause a plasma pump-out in both L- and H-mode discharges at MAST. In this paper we discuss the impact of neutral fueling on this density reduction. The neutral fueling and average particle confinement time $\tau_p$ of the main ion species were calculated using a 0-D particle balance analysis. When the RMPs were applied, it was found that there was an increase in ionizations and a 15$\%$ reduction in $\tau_p$ for L-mode discharges and a similar result for inter-ELM (edge localized modes) periods of H-mode discharges. A time-dependent global multi-reservoir particle balance (MRPB) was developed, which included atomic and molecular reservoirs, to further investigate the role neutrals had on the density change. We discuss how this model was able to accurately reproduce the experimentally measured density reduction and ionization increase due to either a reduction in $\tau_p$ or a reduction in particle fueling efficiency. Results from EMC3-EIRENE modeling indicate this change could be attributed to neutral particle fueling occurring in locations with now-opened field lines due to the chaotic edge-region from RMP applications.

SAGE: Scalable AI Governance & Evaluation

Evaluating relevance in large-scale search systems is fundamentally constrained by the governance gap between nuanced, resource-constrained human oversight and the high-throughput requirements of production systems. While traditional approaches rely on engagement proxies or sparse manual review, these methods often fail to capture the full scope of high-impact relevance failures. We present \textbf{SAGE} (Scalable AI Governance \& Evaluation), a framework that operationalizes high-quality human product judgment as a scalable evaluation signal. At the core of SAGE is a bidirectional calibration loop where natural-language \emph{Policy}, curated \emph{Precedent}, and an \emph{LLM Surrogate Judge} co-evolve. SAGE systematically resolves semantic ambiguities and misalignments, transforming subjective relevance judgment into an executable, multi-dimensional rubric with near human-level agreement. To bridge the gap between frontier model reasoning and industrial-scale inference, we apply teacher-student distillation to transfer high-fidelity judgments into compact student surrogates at \textbf{92$\times$} lower cost. Deployed within LinkedIn Search ecosystems, SAGE guided model iteration through simulation-driven development, distilling policy-aligned models for online serving and enabling rapid offline evaluation. In production, it powered policy oversight that measured ramped model variants and detected regressions invisible to engagement metrics. Collectively, these drove a \textbf{0.25\%} lift in LinkedIn daily active users.

Modelling of spatial structure of divertor footprints caused by edge-localized modes mitigated by magnetic perturbations

Resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) can mitigate the edge-localized modes (ELMs), i.e. cause a change of the ELM character towards smaller energy loss and higher frequency. During mitigation a change of the spatial structure of ELM loads on divertor was observed on DIII-D and MAST: the power is deposited predominantly in the footprint structures formed by the magnetic perturbation. In the present contribution we develop a theory explaining this effect, based on the idea that part of the ELM loss is caused by parallel transport in the homoclinic tangle formed by the magnetic perturbation of the ELM. The modified tangle resulting from the combination of the ELM perturbation and the applied RMP has the expected property of bringing open field lines in the same areas as the tangle from the RMP alone. We show that this explanation is consistent with features of the mitigated ELMs on MAST. We in addition validated our theory by an analysis of simulations of mitigated ELMs using the code JOREK. We produced detailed laminar plots of field lines on the divertor in the JOREK runs with an ELM, an applied RMP, and an ELM mitigated by the presence of the RMP. The results for an ELM clearly show a high-n rotating footprint structure appearing during the nonlinear stage of the ELM, which is not present in the early stage of the ELM. The results for a n=2 RMP from the ELM control coils show the expected n=2 footprint structure. The results for the mitigated ELM show a similar structure, modulated by a higher n perturbation of the ELM, consistent with our theory.

A review of central production experiments at the CERN Omega spectrometer

The non-Abelian nature of QCD suggests that particles that have a gluon constituent, such as glueballs or hybrids, should exist. This paper presents a study of central meson production in the fixed target experiments WA76, WA91 and WA102 at the CERN Omega spectrometer at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 12.7$, 23.8 and 29~GeV. A study of the resonance production cross section as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ shows which states are compatible with being produced by Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE). In these DPE processes, the difference in the transverse momentum between the exchange particles ($dP_T)$ can be used to select out known $q\overline q$ states from non-$q \overline q$ candidates. The distribution of the azimuthal angle ($ϕ$) between the two exchange particles suggests that the Pomeron transforms like a non-conserved vector current. Finally there is evidence from an analysis of the the decay modes of the scalar states observed, that the lightest scalar glueball manifests itself through the mixing with nearby $q\overline q$ states.

Implications of the Glueball-qqbar filter on the 1++ nonet

The application of our glueball-qqbar filter to the centrally produced KKbarpi system shows that the f1(1285) and f1(1420) have the same behaviour; namely consistent with the f1(1420) being the partner to the f1(1285) in the 3P1 nonet of axial mesons. We determine a flavour singlet-octet mixing angle of approximately 50 degrees for this nonet and highlight that the existence of the supposed f1(1510) needs confirmation.

A Glueball- $q\bar{q}$ Filter in Central Hadron Production

We have stumbled upon a remarkable empirical feature of central meson production which separates established $q\bar{q}$ mesons from glueball candidates. This does not appear to have been noted previously and we have no simple explanation for it. We suggest that glueballs and $q\bar{q}$ of the same $J^{PC}$ are distinguishable due to their boson versus fermion internal structure and that this leads to a different topology for central production of glueballs and $q\bar{q}$. Upon application of this test to data from the WA102 experiment we find that the $f_0(1500)$ and the $f_{2}(1900)$ show behaviour consistent with glueballs and opposite to that exhibited by established $q\bar{q}$ states.
