Gromov-Witten invariants on Grassmannians

We prove that any three-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariant on a type A Grassmannian is equal to a classical intersection number on a two-step flag variety. We also give symplectic and orthogonal analogues of this result; in these cases the two-step flag variety is replaced by a sub-maximal isotropic Grassmannian. Our theorems are applied, in type A, to formulate a conjectural quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule, and in the other classical Lie types, to obtain new proofs of the main structure theorems for the quantum cohomology of Lagrangian and orthogonal Grassmannians.

Grothendieck polynomials and quiver formulas

Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials give cohomology formulas for a class of degeneracy loci, which generalize Schubert varieties. The K-theoretic quiver formula of Buch expresses the structure sheaves of these loci as integral linear combinations of products of stable Grothendieck polynomials. We prove an explicit combinatorial formula for the coefficients, which shows that they have alternating signs. Our result is applied to obtain new expansions for the Grothendieck polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.

Quantum cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian

Let V be a symplectic vector space and LG be the Lagrangian Grassmannian which parametrizes maximal isotropic subspaces in V. We give a presentation for the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH^*(LG) and show that its multiplicative structure is determined by the ring of (Q^~)-polynomials. We formulate a "quantum Schubert calculus" which includes quantum Pieri and Giambelli formulas, as well as algorithms for computing the structure constants appearing in the quantum product of Schubert classes.

Quantum cohomology of orthogonal Grassmannians

Let V be a vector space with a nondegenerate symmetric form and OG be the orthogonal Grassmannian which parametrizes maximal isotropic subspaces in V. We give a presentation for the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH^*(OG) and show that its product structure is determined by the ring of (P~)-polynomials. A "quantum Schubert calculus" is formulated, which includes quantum Pieri and Giambelli formulas, as well as algorithms for computing Gromov-Witten invariants. As an application, we show that the table of 3-point, genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for OG coincides with that for a corresponding Lagrangian Grassmannian LG, up to an involution.

Double Schubert polynomials and degeneracy loci for the classical groups

We propose a theory of double Schubert polynomials P_w(X,Y) for the Lie types B, C, D which naturally extends the family of Lascoux of Schutzenberger in type A. These polynomials satisfy positivity, orthogonality, and stability properties, and represent the classes of Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci of vector bundles. When w is a maximal Grassmannian element of the Weyl group, P_w(X,Y) can be expressed in terms of Schur-type determinants and Pfaffians, in analogy with the type A formula of Kempf and Laksov. An example, motivated by quantum cohomology, shows that there are no Chern class formulas for degeneracy loci of ``isotropic morphisms'' of bundles.

On coverings of Deligne-Mumford stacks and surjectivity of the Brauer map

This paper proves a result on the existence of finite flat scheme covers of Deligne-Mumford stacks. This result is used to prove that a large class of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks with affine moduli space are quotient stacks, and in the case of quasi-projective moduli space, to reduce the question to one concerning Brauer groups of schemes.

Schubert Polynomials and Quiver Formulas

The work of Buch and Fulton established a formula for a general kind of degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type $A$. The main ingredients in this formula are Schur determinants and certain integers, the quiver coefficients, which generalize the classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Our aim in this paper is to prove a positive combinatorial formula for the quiver coefficients when the rank conditions defining the degeneracy locus are given by a permutation. In particular, this gives new expansions for Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials and the Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.

Curves of every genus with many points, II: Asymptotically good families

We resolve a 1983 question of Serre by constructing curves with many points of every genus over every finite field. More precisely, we show that for every prime power q there is a positive constant c_q with the following property: for every non-negative integer g, there is a genus-g curve over F_q with at least c_q * g rational points over F_q. Moreover, we show that there exists a positive constant d such that for every q we can choose c_q = d * (log q). We show also that there is a constant c > 0 such that for every q and every n > 0, and for every sufficiently large g, there is a genus-g curve over F_q that has at least c*g/n rational points and whose Jacobian contains a subgroup of rational points isomorphic to (Z/nZ)^r for some r > c*g/n.

Curves of every genus with many points, I: Abelian and toric families

Let N_q(g) denote the maximal number of F_q-rational points on any curve of genus g over the finite field F_q. Ihara (for square q) and Serre (for general q) proved that limsup_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/g > 0 for any fixed q. In their proofs they constructed curves with many points in infinitely many genera; however, their sequences of genera are somewhat sparse. In this paper, we prove that lim_{g-->infinity} N_q(g) = infinity. More precisely, we use abelian covers of P^1 to prove that liminf_{g-->infinity} N_q(g)/(g/log g) > 0, and we use curves on toric surfaces to prove that liminf_{g-->infty} N_q(g)/g^{1/3} > 0; we also show that these results are the best possible that can be proved with these families of curves.

Hodge-theoretic obstruction to existence of quaternion algebras

The class in the Brauer group of a quaternion algebra over a field is 2-torsion. We study the following question: Which 2-torsion elements of the Brauer group of a complex function field are representable by quaternion algebras? Using intersection theory to show that a certain cohomology class (on a smooth projective model) is the class of an algebraic cycle, we arrive at an obstruction, defined on a subgroup of the 2-torsion of the Brauer group, to representability by quaternion algebras. For the function fields of some complex threefolds, the obstruction map is computed and found to be nontrivial.

Gromov-Witten invariants of a class of toric varieties

We describe the quantum cohomology rings of a class of toric varieties. The description includes, in addition to the (already known) ring presentations, the (new) analogues for toric varieties of the sorts of quantum Giambelli formulas which exist already for Grassmannian varieties, flag varieties, etc.

Standard conjectures for the arithmetic Grassmannian G(2,N) and Racah polynomials

We prove the arithmetic Hodge index and hard Lefschetz conjectures for the Grassmannian $G=G(2,N)$ parametrizing lines in projective space, for the natural arithmetic Lefschetz operator defined via the Plücker embedding of $G$ in projective space. The analysis of the Hodge index inequalities involves estimates on certain Racah polynomials.

Canonical rational equivalence of intersections of divisors

We consider the operation of intersecting with a locally principal Cartier divisor (i.e., a Cartier divisor which is principal on some neighborhood of its support). We describe this operation explicitly on the level of cycles and rational equivalences and as a corollary obtain a formula for rational equivalence between intersections of two locally principal Cartier divisors. Such canonical rational equivalence applies quite naturally to the setting of algebraic stacks. We present two applications: (i) a simplification of the development of Fulton-MacPherson-style intersection theory on Deligne-Mumford stacks, and (ii) invariance of a key rational equivalence under a certain group action (which is used in developing the theory of virtual fundamental classes via intrinsic normal cones).

Associativity relations in quantum cohomology

We describe interdependencies among the quantum cohomology associativity relations. We strengthen the first reconstruction theorem of Kontsevich and Manin by identifying a subcollection of the associativity relations which implies the full system of WDVV equations. This provides a tool for identifying non-geometric solutions to WDVV.
