Noncommutative localisation in algebraic K-theory I

This article establishes, for an appropriate localisation of associative rings, a long exact sequence in algebraic K-theory. The main result goes as follows. Let A be an associative ring and let A-->B be the localisation with respect to a set sigma of maps between finitely generated projective A-modules. Suppose that Tor_n^A(B,B) vanishes for all n>0. View each map in sigma as a complex (of length 1, meaning one non-zero map between two non-zero objects) in the category of perfect complexes D^perf(A). Denote by the thick subcategory generated by these complexes. Then the canonical functor D^perf(A)-->D^perf(B) induces (up to direct factors) an equivalence D^perf(A)/ --> D^perf(B). As a consequence, one obtains a homotopy fibre sequence K(A,sigma)-->K(A)-->K(B) (up to surjectivity of K_0(A)-->K_0(B)) of Waldhausen K-theory spectra. In subsequent articles we will present the K- and L-theoretic consequences of the main theorem in a form more suitable for the applications to surgery. For example if, in addition to the vanishing of Tor_n^A(B,B), we also assume that every map in sigma is a monomorphism, then there is a description of the homotopy fiber of the map K(A)-->K(B) as the Quillen K-theory of a suitable exact category of torsion modules.

Algebraic and combinatorial codimension-1 transversality

The Waldhausen construction of Mayer-Vietoris splittings of chain complexes over an injective generalized free product of group rings is extended to a combinatorial construction of Seifert-van Kampen splittings of CW complexes with fundamental group an injective generalized free product.

On the calculation of UNil

Cappell's codimension 1 splitting obstruction surgery group UNil_n(R;R,R) of a ring with involution R is a direct summand of the Wall surgery obstruction group L_n(R[D_{\infty}]) of the amalgamated free product R[D_{\infty}] = R[Z_2]*_RR[Z_2], with D_{\infty}=Z_2*Z_2 the infinite dihedral group. We use the quadratic Poincaré cobordism formulation of the L-groups to prove that L_n(R[x]) = L_n(R)\oplus UNil_n(R;R,R), with \bar{x} = x . We combine this with M. Weiss' universal chain bundle theory to produce almost complete calculations of UNil_*(Z;Z,Z) and L_*(Z[D_{\infty}]).

Rigidity and gluing for Morse and Novikov complexes

We obtain rigidity and gluing results for the Morse complex of a real-valued Morse function as well as for the Novikov complex of a circle-valued Morse function. A rigidity result is also proved for the Floer complex of a hamiltonian defined on a closed symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ with $c_{1}|_{π_{2}(M)}=[ω]|_{π_{2}(M)}=0$. The rigidity results for these complexes show that the complex of a fixed generic function/hamiltonian is a retract of the Morse (respectively Novikov or Floer) complex of any other sufficiently $C^{0}$ close generic function/hamiltonian. The gluing result is a type of Mayer-Vietoris formula for the Morse complex. It is used to express algebraically the Novikov complex up to isomorphism in terms of the Morse complex of a fundamental domain. Morse cobordisms are used to compare various Morse-type complexes without the need of bifurcation theory.

Generalized Arf invariants in algebraic L-theory

The difference between the quadratic L-groups L_*(A) and the symmetric L-groups L^*(A) of a ring with involution A is detected by generalized Arf invariants. The special case A=Z[x] gives a complete set of invariants for the Cappell UNil-groups UNil_*(Z;Z,Z) for the infinite dihedral group D_{\infty}=Z_2*Z_2, extending the results of Connolly and Ranicki (math.AT/0304016) and Connolly and Davis.

Blanchfield and Seifert algebra in high dimensional knot theory

Novikov initiated the study of the algebraic properties of quadratic forms over polynomial extensions by a far-reaching analogue of the Pontrjagin-Thom transversality construction of a Seifert surface of a knot and the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior. In this paper the analogy is applied to explain the relationship between the Seifert forms over a ring with involution and Blanchfield forms over the Laurent polynomial extension.

Representations of algebras as universal localizations

Every finitely presented algebra S is shown to be Morita equivalent to the universal localization σ^{-1}R of a finite dimensional algebra R. The construction provides many examples of universal localizations which are not stably flat, i.e. Tor^R_i(σ^{-1}R,σ^{-1}R) is non-zero for some i>0. It is also shown that there is no algorithm to determine if two Malcolmson normal forms represent the same element of σ^{-1}R.

Controlled surgery with trivial local fundamental groups

We provide a proof of the controlled surgery sequence, including stability, in the special case that the local fundamental groups are trivial. Stability is a key ingredient in the construction of exotic homology manifolds by Bryant, Ferry, Mio and Weinberger, but no proof has been available. The development given here is based on work of M. Yamasaki.

Noncommutative localization and chain complexes I. Algebraic K- and L-theory

The noncommutative (Cohn) localization S^{-1}R of a ring R is defined for any collection S of morphisms of f.g. projective left R-modules. We exhibit S^{-1}R as the endomorphism ring of R in an appropriate triangulated category. We use this expression to prove that if S^{-1}R is "stably flat over R" (meaning that Tor^R_i(S^{-1}R,S^{-1}R)=0 for i>0) then every bounded f.g. projective S^{-1}R-module chain complex D with [D] \in im(K_0(R)-->K_0(S^{-1}R)) is chain equivalent to S^{-1}C for a bounded f.g. projective R-module chain complex C, and that there is a localization exact sequence in higher algebraic K-theory >... --> K_n(R) --> K_n(S^{-1}R) --> K_n(R,S) --> K_{n-1}(R) --> ..., extending to the left the sequence obtained for n<2 by Schofield. For a noncommutative localization S^{-1}R of a ring with involution R there are analogous results for algebraic L-theory, extending the results of Vogel from quadratic to symmetric L-theory.

Algebraic Poincare cobordism

This paper is an introduction to the use of the cobordism of chain complexes with Poincaré duality in surgery theory. It is a companion to the author's paper "An introduction to algebraic surgery" math.AT/0008071 (to appear in Volume 2 of Surveys in Surgery Theory, Ann. of Maths. Studies, Princeton, 2001) which is an introduction to algebraic surgery using forms and formations.

A survey of Wall's finiteness obstruction

Wall's finiteness obstruction is an algebraic K-theory invariant which decides if a finitely dominated space is homotopy equivalent to a finite CW complex. The object of this survey is to describe the invariant (which was first formulated in 1965) and some of its many applications to the surgery classification of manifolds.

An introduction to algebraic surgery

Browder-Novikov-Sullivan-Wall surgery theory investigates the homotopy types of manifolds, using a combination of algebra and topology. It is the aim of these notes to provide an introduction to the more algebraic aspects of the theory (such as the Wall surgery obstruction groups), without losing sight of the geometric motivation.
