Logarithmic Corrections to Kerr Thermodynamics

Recent work has shown that loop corrections from massless particles generate $\frac{3}{2}\log T_{\text{Hawking}}$ corrections to black hole entropy which dominate the thermodynamics of cold near-extreme charged black holes. Here we adapt this analysis to near-extreme Kerr black holes. Like AdS$_2\times S^2$, the Near-Horizon Extreme Kerr (NHEK) metric has a family of normalizable zero modes corresponding to reparametrizations of boundary time. The path integral over these zero modes leads to an infrared divergence in the one-loop approximation to the Euclidean NHEK partition function. We regulate this divergence by retaining the leading finite temperature correction in the NHEK scaling limit. This "not-NHEK" geometry lifts the eigenvalues of the zero modes, rendering the path integral infrared finite. The quantum-corrected near-extremal entropy exhibits $\frac{3}{2}\log T_{\text{Hawking}}$ behavior characteristic of the Schwarzian model and predicts a lifting of the ground state degeneracy for the extremal Kerr black hole.

Cosmic ER=EPR in dS/CFT

In the dS/CFT correspondence, bulk states on global spacelike slices of de Sitter space are dual to (in general) entangled states in the tensor product of the dual CFT Hilbert space with itself. We show, using a quasinormal mode basis, that the Euclidean vacuum (for free scalars in a certain mass range) is a thermofield double state in the dual CFT description, and that the global de Sitter geometry emerges from quantum entanglement between two copies of the CFT. Tracing over one copy of the CFT produces a mixed thermal state describing a single static causal diamond.

An Integer Basis for Celestial Amplitudes

We present a discrete basis of solutions of the massless Klein-Gordon equation in 3+1 Minkowski space which transform as sl(2,C) Lorentz/conformal primaries and descendants, and whose elements all have integer conformal dimension. We show that the basis is complete in the sense that the Wightman function can be expressed as a quadratic sum over the basis elements.

Self-Dual Black Holes in Celestial Holography

We construct two-dimensional quantum states associated to four-dimensional linearized rotating self-dual black holes in $(2,2)$ signature Klein space. The states are comprised of global conformal primaries circulating on the celestial torus, the Kleinian analog of the celestial sphere. By introducing a generalized tower of Goldstone operators we identify the states as coherent exponentiations carrying an infinite tower of ${\rm w}_{1+\infty}$ charges or soft hair. We relate our results to recent approaches to black hole scattering, including a connection to Wilson lines, $\mathcal{S}$-matrix results, and celestial holography in curved backgrounds.

Deforming Soft Algebras for Gauge Theory

Symmetry algebras deriving from towers of soft theorems can be deformed by a short list of higher-dimension Wilsonian corrections to the effective action. We study the simplest of these deformations in gauge theory arising from a massless complex scalar coupled to $F^2$. The soft gauge symmetry '$s$-algebra', compactly realized as a higher-spin current algebra acting on the celestial sphere, is deformed and enlarged to an associative algebra containing soft scalar generators. This deformed soft algebra is found to be non-abelian even in abelian gauge theory. A two-parameter family of central extensions of the $s$-subalgebra are generated by shifting and decoupling the scalar generators. It is shown that these central extensions can also be generated by expanding around a certain non-trivial but Lorentz invariant shockwave type background for the scalar field.

Celestial Amplitudes as AdS-Witten Diagrams

Both celestial and momentum space amplitudes in four dimensions are beset by divergences resulting from spacetime translation and sometimes scale invariance. In this paper we consider a (linearized) marginal deformation of the celestial CFT for Yang-Mills theory which preserves 2D conformal invariance but breaks both spacetime translation and scale invariance and involves a chirally coupled massive scalar. The resulting celestial amplitudes are completely finite (apart from the usual soft and collinear divergences) and take the canonical CFT form. Moreover, we show they can be simply rewritten in terms of AdS$_3$-Witten contact diagrams which evaluate to the well-known $D$-functions, thereby forging a direct connection between flat and AdS holography.

Photon Rings Around Warped Black Holes

The black hole photon ring is a prime target for upcoming space-based VLBI missions seeking to image the fine structure of astrophysical black holes. The classical Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding nearly bound null geodesics control the quasinormal ringing of a perturbed black hole as it settles back down to equilibrium, and they admit a holographic interpretation in terms of quantum Ruelle resonances of the microstate dual to the Kerr black hole. Recent work has identified a number of emergent symmetries related to the intricate self-similar structure of the photon ring. Here, we explore this web of interrelated phenomena in an exactly soluble example that arises as an approximation to the near-extremal Kerr black hole. The self-dual warped AdS$_3$ geometry has a photon ring as well as $\mathsf{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ isometries and an exactly calculable quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum. We show explicitly that the geometric optics approximation reproduces the eikonal limit of the exact QNM spectrum, as well as the approximate "near-ring" wavefunctions. The $\mathsf{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ isometries are directly related to the emergent conformal symmetry of the photon ring in black hole images but are distinct from a recently discussed conformal symmetry of the eikonal QNM spectrum. The equivalence of the classical QNM spectrum -- and thus the photon ring -- to the quantum Ruelle resonances in the context of a spacetime with a putative holographic dual suggests that the photon ring of a warped black hole is indeed part of the black hole hologram.

Soft Gravitons in the BFSS Matrix Model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large $N$ limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing $N$ nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large $N$ M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with $N$ for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large $N$ expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA $U(1)_{RR}$ asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.

Holography of the Photon Ring

Space-based next-generation interferometers propose to measure the Lyapunov exponents of the nearly bound geodesics that comprise the photon ring surrounding the black hole M87*. We argue that these classical Lyapunov exponents equal the quantum Ruelle resonances describing the late-time approach to thermal equilibrium of the quantum microstate holographically dual to any Kerr black hole such as M87*. Moreover, we identify "near-ring regions" in the phase space of fields propagating on Kerr that exhibit critical behavior, including emergent conformal symmetries. These are analogues for sub-extremal Kerr of the much-studied "near-horizon regions" of (near-)extremal black holes. The emergent conformal symmetries greatly constrain the observational predictions for the fine photon ring substructure around M87* and for quasinormal gravitational-wave ringdowns, as well as any proposal for a quantum holographic dual to the Kerr black hole. More generally, we hope that our identification of several universal features of Kerr spectroscopy provides a useful starting point for a bottom-up approach to holography for astrophysical black holes.

The Universe as a Quantum Encoder

Quantum mechanical unitarity in our universe is challenged both by the notion of the big bang, in which nothing transforms into something, and the expansion of space, in which something transforms into more something. This motivates the hypothesis that quantum mechanical time evolution is always isometric, in the sense of preserving inner products, but not necessarily unitary. As evidence for this hypothesis we show that in two spacetime dimensions (i) there is net entanglement entropy produced in free field theory by a moving mirror or expanding geometry, (ii) the Lorentzian path integral for a finite elements lattice discretization gives non-unitary isometric time evolution, and (iii) tensor network descriptions of AdS$_3$ induce a non-unitary but isometric time evolution on an embedded two-dimensional de Sitter braneworld. In the last example time evolution is a quantum error-correcting code.

Black Holes in Klein Space

The analytic continuation of the general signature $(1,3)$ Lorentzian Kerr-Taub-NUT black holes to signature $(2,2)$ Kleinian black holes is studied. Their global structure is characterized by a toric Penrose diagram resembling their Lorentzian counterparts. Kleinian black holes are found to be self-dual when their mass and NUT charge are equal for any value of the Kerr rotation parameter $a$. Remarkably, it is shown that the rotation $a$ can be eliminated by a large diffeomorphism; this result also holds in Euclidean signature. The continuation from Lorentzian to Kleinian signature is naturally induced by the analytic continuation of the S-matrix. Indeed, we show that the geometry of linearized black holes, including Kerr-Taub-NUT, is captured by $(2,2)$ three-point scattering amplitudes of a graviton and a massive spinning particle. This stands in sharp contrast to their Lorentzian counterparts for which the latter vanishes kinematically, and enables a direct link to the S-matrix.

Perturbatively Exact $w_{1+\infty}$ Asymptotic Symmetry of Quantum Self-Dual Gravity

The infinite tower of positive-helicity soft gravitons in any minimally coupled, tree-level, asymptotically flat four-dimensional (4D) gravity was recently shown to generate a $w_{1+\infty}$ asymptotic symmetry algebra. It is natural to ask whether this classical algebra acquires quantum corrections at loop level. We explore this in quantum self-dual gravity, whose amplitudes acquire known one-loop exact all-plus helicity quantum corrections. We show using collinear splitting formulae that, remarkably, the $w_{1+\infty}$ algebra persists in quantum self-dual gravity without corrections.

w(1+infinity) and the Celestial Sphere

It is shown that the infinite tower of tree-level soft graviton symmetries in asymptotically flat 4D quantum gravity can be organized into a single chiral 2D Kac-Moody symmetry based on the wedge algebra of w(1+infinity). The infinite towers of soft photon or gluon symmetries also transform irreducibly under w(1+infinity).

Infinite-Dimensional Fermionic Symmetry in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We establish the existence of an infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetry in four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories by analyzing semiclassical photino dynamics in abelian ${\cal N}=1$ theories with charged matter. The symmetry is parametrized by a spinor-valued function on an asymptotic $S^2$ at null infinity. It is not manifest at the level of the Lagrangian, but acts non-trivially on physical states, and its Ward identity is the soft photino theorem. The infinite-dimensional fermionic symmetry resides in the same ${\cal N}=1$ supermultiplet as the physically non-trivial large gauge symmetries associated with the soft photon theorem.

Holographic Symmetry Algebras for Gauge Theory and Gravity

All 4D gauge and gravitational theories in asymptotically flat spacetimes contain an infinite number of non-trivial symmetries. They can be succinctly characterized by generalized 2D currents acting on the celestial sphere. A complete classification of these symmetries and their algebras is an open problem. Here we construct two towers of such 2D currents from positive-helicity photons, gluons, or gravitons with integer conformal weights. These generate the symmetries associated to an infinite tower of conformally soft theorems. The current algebra commutators are explicitly derived from the poles in the OPE coefficients, and found to comprise a rich closed subalgebra of the complete symmetry algebra.

State-Operator Correspondence in Celestial Conformal Field Theory

The bulk-to-boundary dictionary for 4D celestial holography is given a new entry defining 2D boundary states living on oriented circles on the celestial sphere. The states are constructed using the 2D CFT state-operator correspondence from operator insertions corresponding to either incoming or outgoing particles which cross the celestial sphere inside the circle. The BPZ construction is applied to give an inner product on such states whose associated bulk adjoints are shown to involve a shadow transform. Scattering amplitudes are then given by BPZ inner products between states living on the same circle but with opposite orientations. 2D boundary states are found to encode the same information as their 4D bulk counterparts, but organized in a radically different manner.

Conformal Block Expansion in Celestial CFT

The 4D 4-point scattering amplitude of massless scalars via a massive exchange is expressed in a basis of conformal primary particle wavefunctions. This celestial amplitude is expanded in a basis of 2D conformal partial waves on the unitary principal series, and then rewritten as a sum over 2D conformal blocks via contour deformation. The conformal blocks include intermediate exchanges of spinning light-ray states, as well as scalar states with positive integer conformal weights. The conformal block prefactors are found as expected to be quadratic in the celestial OPE coefficients.

$(2,2)$ Scattering and the Celestial Torus

Analytic continuation from Minkowski space to $(2,2)$ split signature spacetime has proven to be a powerful tool for the study of scattering amplitudes. Here we show that, under this continuation, null infinity becomes the product of a null interval with a celestial torus (replacing the celestial sphere) and has only one connected component. Spacelike and timelike infinity are time-periodic quotients of AdS$_3$. These three components of infinity combine to an $S^3$ represented as a toric fibration over the interval. Privileged scattering states of scalars organize into $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_L \times SL(2,\mathbb{R})_R$ conformal primary wave functions and their descendants with real integral or half-integral conformal weights, giving the normally continuous scattering problem a discrete character.
