The Stringy Origins of Galileons and their Novel Limit

We show generalized Galileons -- a particular subclass of Horndeski gravity -- arise from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory to first order in $α'$. This suggests Horndeski theories of gravity have a string-theoretic origin. The form of the Galileonic terms is precisely fixed by parameters of the embedding spacetime, so that only a specific subset of Horndeski theories is permitted by string theory. A novel limit of the model is considered by performing a dimensionful rescaling of $α'$.

Emergence of Spacetime: From Entanglement to Einstein

Here I develop the connection between thermodynamics, entanglement, and gravity. I begin by showing that the classical null energy condition (NEC) can arise as a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics applied to local holographic screens. This is accomplished by essentially reversing the steps of Hawking's area theorem, leading to the Ricci convergence condition as an input, from which an application of Einstein's equations yields the NEC -- even in the presence of 1-loop quantum corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula. Then, by attributing thermodynamics to the stretched horizon of future lightcones -- a timelike hypersurface generated by a collection of radially accelerating observers with constant and uniform proper acceleration -- I derive Einstein's equations from the Clausius relation $TΔS_{\text{rev}}=Q$, where $ΔS_{\text{rev}}$ is the reversible entropy change. Based on this derivation I uncover a local first law of gravity, $ΔE=TΔS-W$, connecting gravitational entropy $S$ to matter energy $E$ and work $W$. I then provide an entanglement interpretation of stretched lightcone thermodynamics by extending the entanglement equilibrium proposal. Using the $\text{AdS}_{3}/\text{CFT}_{2}$ correspondence, I then provide a microscopic explanation of the `thermodynamic volume' in extended black hole thermodynamics and reveal the super-entropicity of $\text{AdS}_{3}$ black holes is due to the gravitational entropy overcounting the number of available dual $\text{CFT}_{2}$ states. Finally, I conclude by providing a recent generalization of the extended first law of entanglement, and study its non-trivial 2+1- and 1+1-dimensional limits, including an extended first law for Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. This thesis is self-contained and pedagogical by including useful background content relevant to emergent gravity.

A Local First Law of Gravity

We find a (quasi-)local first law of thermodynamics, $ΔE = T ΔS - W$, connecting gravitational entropy, $S$, with matter energy and work. For Einstein gravity $S$ is the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, while for general theories of gravity $S$ is the Wald entropy, evaluated on the stretched future light cone of any point in an arbitrary spacetime, not necessarily containing a black hole. The equation can be written as $ρΔV = T ΔS - p ΔV$ by regarding the energy-momentum tensor as that of a fluid.

$D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and Beyond

A `novel' pure theory of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four-spacetime dimensions can be constructed by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, seemingly eluding Lovelock's theorem. Recently, however, the well-posedness of this model has been called into question. Here we apply a `dimensional regularization' technique, first used by Mann and Ross to write down a $D\to2$ limit of general relativity, to the case of pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The resulting four-dimensional action is a particular Horndeski theory of gravity matching the result found via a Kaluza-Klein reduction over a flat internal space. Some cosmological solutions of this four-dimensional theory are examined. We further adapt the technique to higher curvature Lovelock theories of gravity, as well as a low-energy effective string action with an $α'$ correction. With respect to the $D\to4$ limit of the $α'$-corrected string action, we find we must also rescale the dilaton to have a non-singular action in four dimensions. Interestingly, when the conformal rescaling $Φ$ is interpreted as another dilaton, the regularized string action appears to be a special case of a covariant multi-Galileon theory of gravity.

Novel Aspects of the Extended First Law of Entanglement

Using AdS/CFT an extended first law of entanglement has been previously derived for the vacuum reduced to a ball in Minkowski. The statement not only includes perturbations of the state but also of the conformal field theory (CFT), via variations of the generalized central charge. We clarify some subtleties previously overlooked and use simple arguments to generalize prior derivations to arbitrary gravity theories in the bulk as well as new regions in the boundary CFT. Our construction also applies to two-dimensional bulk theories and admits an interesting extension for a three-dimensional bulk, providing a curious result regarding the thermodynamic volume in extended black hole thermodynamics. We discuss future prospects regarding the extended first law of entanglement.

Higher spin partition functions via the quasinormal mode method in de Sitter quantum gravity

In this note we compute the 1-loop partition function of spin-$s$ fields on Euclidean de Sitter space $S^{2n+1}$ using the quasinormal mode method. Instead of computing the quasinormal mode frequencies from scratch, we use the analytic continuation prescription $L_{\text{AdS}}\to iL_{\text{dS}}$, appearing in the dS/CFT correspondence, and Wick rotate the normal mode frequencies of fields on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ into the quasinormal mode frequencies of fields on de Sitter space. We compare the quasinormal mode and heat kernel methods of calculating 1-loop determinants, finding exact agreement, and furthermore explicitly relate these methods via a sum over the conformal dimension. We discuss how the Wick rotation of normal modes on thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ can be generalized to calculating 1-loop partition functions on the thermal spherical quotients $S^{2n+1}/\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. We further show that the quasinormal mode frequencies encode the group theoretic structure of the spherical spacetimes in question, analogous to the recent analysis made for thermal AdS in (1910.07607) and (1910.11913).

Normal modes in thermal AdS via the Selberg zeta function

The heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing 1-loop partition functions of spin $s$ fields on hyperbolic quotient spacetimes $\mathbb{H}^{3}/\mathbb{Z}$ are related via the Selberg zeta function. We extend that analysis to thermal $\text{AdS}_{2n+1}$ backgrounds, with quotient structure $\mathbb{H}^{2n+1}/\mathbb{Z}$. Specifically, we demonstrate the zeros of the Selberg function encode the normal mode frequencies of spin fields upon removal of non-square-integrable modes. With this information we construct the 1-loop partition functions for symmetric transverse traceless tensors in terms of the Selberg zeta function and find exact agreement with the heat kernel method.

On the Constraint Structure of Vacuum Energy Sequestering

We carry out the Hamiltonian analysis of the local vacuum energy sequestering model - a manifestly local and diffeomorphism invariant extension of general relativity which has been shown to remove the radiatively unstable contribution to the vacuum energy generated by matter loops. We find that the degravitation of this UV sensitive quantity is enforced via global relations that are a consequence of the model's peculiar constraint structure. We also show that the model propagates the proper number of degrees of freedom and thus locally reduces to general relativity on-shell.

A Microscopic Description of Thermodynamic Volume in Extended Black Hole Thermodynamics

Using the fact that theories of gravity with asymptotically three-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometries have dual descriptions as two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), we present the first study in field theory of the thermodynamic volume of various black hole solutions. We explain in general two-dimensional CFT terms why the presence of a thermodynamic volume can render certain black hole solutions "super-entropic". Super-entropicity simply results from the fact that the Cardy formula, which gives the gravitational Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, can over-count the CFT entropy. The examples of charged Banados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and generalized exotic BTZ black holes are described. These observations help explain why the specific heat at constant volume can signal the instability of such solutions, as recently conjectured.

Connecting quasinormal modes and heat kernels in 1-loop determinants

We connect two different approaches for calculating functional determinants on quotients of hyperbolic spacetime: the heat kernel method and the quasinormal mode method. For the example of a rotating BTZ background, we show how the image sum in the heat kernel method builds up the logarithms in the quasinormal mode method, while the thermal sum in the quasinormal mode method builds up the integrand of the heat kernel. More formally, we demonstrate how the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods are linked via the Selberg zeta function. We show that a 1-loop partition function computed using the heat kernel method may be cast as a Selberg zeta function whose zeros encode quasinormal modes. We discuss how our work may be used to predict quasinormal modes on more complicated spacetimes.

BTZ one-loop determinants via the Selberg zeta function for general spin

We relate the heat kernel and quasinormal mode methods of computing the 1-loop partition function of arbitrary spin fields on a rotating (Euclidean) BTZ background using the Selberg zeta function associated with $\mathbb{H}^{3}/\mathbb{Z}$, extending (1811.08433). Previously, Perry and Williams showed for a scalar field that the zeros of the Selberg zeta function coincide with the poles of the associated scattering operator upon a relabeling of integers. We extend the integer relabeling to the case of general spin, and discuss its relationship to the removal of non-square-integrable Euclidean zero modes.

Equilibrium to Einstein: Entanglement, Thermodynamics, and Gravity

Here we develop the connection between thermodynamics, entanglement, and gravity. By attributing thermodynamics to timeslices of a causal diamond, we show that the Clausius relation $TΔS_{\text{rev}}=Q$, where $ΔS_{\text{rev}}$ is the reversible entropy change, gives rise to the non-linear gravitational equations of motion for a wide class of diffeomorphism invariant theories. We then compare the Clausius relation to the first law of causal diamond mechanics (FLCD), a geometric identity and necessary ingredient in deriving Jacobson's entanglement equilibrium proposal -- the entanglement entropy of a spherical region with a fixed volume is maximal in vacuum. Specifically we show that the condition of fixed volume can be understood as subtracting the irreversible contribution to the thermodynamic entropy. This provides a "reversible thermodynamic process" interpretation of the FLCD, and that the condition of entanglement equilibrium may be regarded as equilibrium thermodynamics for which the Clausius relation holds. Finally, we extend the entanglement equilibrium proposal to the timelike stretched horizons of future lightcones, providing an entanglement interpretation of stretched lightcone thermodynamics.

Einstein's Equations from the Stretched Future Light Cone

We define the stretched future light cone, a timelike hypersurface composed of the worldlines of radially accelerating observers with constant and uniform proper acceleration. By attributing temperature and entropy to this hypersurface, we derive Einstein's equations from the Clausius relation. Moreover, we show that the gravitational equations of motion for a broad class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories of gravity can be obtained from thermodynamics on the stretched future light cone, provided the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is replaced by the Wald entropy.

Thermodynamic Origin of the Null Energy Condition

We derive the classical null energy condition, understood as a constraint on the Ricci tensor, from the second law of thermodynamics applied locally to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy associated with patches of null congruences. The derivation provides evidence that the null energy condition, which has usually been regarded as a condition on matter, is fundamentally a property of gravity.

Logarithmic Corrections to Gravitational Entropy and the Null Energy Condition

Using a relation between the thermodynamics of local horizons and the null energy condition, we consider the effects of quantum corrections to the gravitational entropy. In particular, we find that the geometric form of the null energy condition is not affected by the inclusion of logarithmic corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
