Almost Hermitian Structures and Quaternionic Geometries

Gray & Hervella gave a classification of almost Hermitian structures (g,I) into 16 classes. We systematically study the interaction between these classes when one has an almost hyper-Hermitian structure (g,I,J,K). In general dimension we find at most 167 different almost hyper-Hermitian structures. In particular, we obtain a number of relations that give hyperKäher or locally conformal hyperKähler structures, thus generalising a result of Hitchin. We also study the types of almost quaternion-Hermitian geometries that arise and tabulate the results.

Einstein Metrics via Intrinsic or Parallel Torsion

The classification of Riemannian manifolds by the holonomy group of their Levi-Civita connection picks out many interesting classes of structures, several of which are solutions to the Einstein equations. The classification has two parts. The first consists of isolated examples: the Riemannian symmetric spaces. The second consists of geometries that can occur in continuous families: these include the Calabi-Yau structures and Joyce manifolds of string theory. One may ask how one can weaken the definitions and still obtain similar classifications. We present two closely related suggestions. The classifications for these give isolated examples that are isotropy irreducible spaces, and known families that are the nearly Kähler manifolds in dimension 6 and Gray's weak holonomy G$_2$ structures in dimension 7.

Potential one-forms for hyperkähler structures with torsion

It is shown that an HKT-space with closed parallel potential 1-form has $D(2,1;-1)$-symmetry. Every locally conformally hyperkähler manifold generates this type of geometry. The HKT-spaces with closed parallel potential 1-form arising in this way are characterized by their symmetries and an inhomogeneous cubic condition on their torsion.

Superconformal symmetry and hyperKaehler manifolds with torsion

The geometry arising from Michelson & Strominger's study of N=4B supersymmetric quantum mechanics with superconformal D(2,1;alpha)-symmetry is a hyperKaehler manifold with torsion (HKT) together with a special homothety. It is shown that different parameters alpha are related via changes in potentials for the HKT target spaces. For alpha not 0 or -1, we describe how each such HKT 4m-manifold M is derived from a space N of dimension 4m-4 which is quaternionic Kaehler with torsion and carries an Abelian instanton.

Cohomogeneity-one G2-structures

G2-manifolds with a cohomogeneity-one action of a compact Lie group G are studied. For G simple, all solutions with holonomy G2 and weak holonomy G2 are classified. The holonomy G2 solutions are necessarily Ricci-flat and there is a one-parameter family with SU(3)-symmetry. The weak holonomy G2 solutions are Einstein of positive scalar curvature and are uniquely determined by the simple symmetry group. During the proof the equations for G2-symplectic and G2-cosymplectic structures are studied and the topological types of the manifolds admitting such structures are determined. New examples of compact G2-cosymplectic manifolds and complete G2-symplectic structures are found.

HyperKähler Potentials in Cohomogeneity Two

A hyperKähler potential is a function rho that is a Kähler potential for each complex structure compatible with the hyperKähler structure. Nilpotent orbits in a complex simple Lie algebra are known to carry hyperKähler metrics admitting such potentials. In this paper, we explicitly calculate the hyperKähler potential when the orbit is of cohomogeneity two. In some cases, we find that this structure lies in a one-parameter family of hyperKähler metrics with Kähler potentials, generalising the Eguchi-Hanson metrics in dimension four.

The HyperKähler Geometry Associated to Wolf Spaces

Let G be a compact simple Lie group and the O the minimal nilpotent orbit in g^C. We determine all G-invariant Kähler potentials for hyperKähler metrics compatible with the KKS complex symplectic form on O.

HyperKähler Potentials via Finite-Dimensional Quotients

It is known that nilpotent orbits in a complex simple Lie algebra admit hyperKähler metrics with a single function that is a global potential for each of the Kähler structures (a hyperKähler potential). In an earlier paper the authors showed that nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras can be constructed as finite-dimensional hyperKähler quotient of a flat vector space. This paper uses that quotient construction to compute hyperKähler potentials explicitly for orbits of elements with small Jordan blocks. It is seen that the Kähler potentials of Biquard and Gauduchon for SL(n)-orbits of elements with X^2=0, are in fact hyperKähler potentials.

Quaternionic Kähler Manifolds of Cohomogeneity One

Classification results are given for (i) compact quaternionic Kähler manifolds with a cohomogeneity-one action of a semi-simple group, (ii) certain complete hyperKähler manifolds with a cohomogeneity-two action of a semi-simple group preserving each complex structure, (iii) compact 3-Sasakian manifolds which are cohomogeneity one with respect to a group of 3-Sasakian symmetries. Information is also obtained about non-compact quaternionic Kähler manifolds of cohomogeneity one and the cohomogeneity of adjoint orbits in complex semi-simple Lie algebras.
