Non-Fermi-liquid behaviour and Fermi-surface expansion induced by van Hove-driven ferromagnetic fluctuations: the D-TRILEX analysis

We consider the electronic and magnetic properties of the Hubbard model on a square lattice with the Fermi level near van Hove singularity and the ratio of the next-nearest-neighbor and nearest-neighbor hoppings $t'/t=-0.45$, which favours the ferromagnetic instability. We find, that a self-consistent consideration of the ferromagnetic fluctuations within the D-TRILEX approach results in the splitting of the electronic spectral function at low temperatures. This splitting exhibits only a weak momentum dependence, and only one of the split bands crosses the Fermi level. As a result, the Fermi surface itself remains unsplit, but its area increases, reflecting the presence of non-Fermi-liquid electronic excitations. We show that both the self-consistent account of the non-local contributions to the electronic self-energy and the proper treatment of electron interaction vertices in D-TRILEX are important to obtain this behaviour.

The Bethe-Salpeter equation at the critical end-point of the Mott transition

Strong repulsive interactions between electrons can lead to a Mott metal-insulator transition. The Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) explains the critical end-point and hysteresis region with single-particle concepts such as the spectral function and the quasiparticle weight. In this work, we reconsider the critical end point of the metal-insulator transition on the two-particle level. We show that the relevant eigenvalue and eigenvector of the non-local Bethe-Salpeter kernel provide a unified picture of the hysteresis region and of the critical end point of the Mott transition. In particular, they simultaneously explain the thermodynamics of the hysteresis region and the iterative stability of the DMFT equations. This analysis paves the way for a deeper understanding of phase transitions in correlated materials.

Correlated starting points for the functional renormalization group

We present a general frame to extend functional renormalization group (fRG) based computational schemes by using an exactly solvable interacting reference problem as starting point for the RG flow. The systematic expansion around this solution accounts for a non-perturbative inclusion of correlations. Introducing auxiliary fermionic fields by means of a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, we derive the flow equations for the auxiliary fields and determine the relation to the conventional weak-coupling truncation of the hierarchy of flow equations. As a specific example we consider the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) solution as reference system, and discuss the relation to the recently introduced DMF$^2$RG and the dual-fermion formalism.

Van Hove singularity and spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking in Sr3Ru2O7

The most salient features observed around a metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7 are well captured in a simple model for spontaneous Fermi surface symmetry breaking under a magnetic field, without invoking a putative quantum critical point. The Fermi surface symmetry breaking happens in both a majority and a minority spin band but with a different magnitude of the order parameter, when either band is tuned close to van Hove filling by the magnetic field. The transition is second order for high temperature T and changes into first order for low T. The first order transition is accompanied by a metamagnetic transition. The uniform magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient show strong T dependence, especially a log T divergence at van Hove filling. The Fermi surface instability then cuts off such non-Fermi liquid behavior and gives rise to a cusp in the susceptibility and a specific heat jump at the transition temperature.
