Radiation from an emitter revolving around a magnetized non-rotating black hole

One of the methods of study of black holes in astrophysics is based on broadening of the spectrum of radiation of ionized Iron atoms. The line K$α$ associated with Iron emission at 6.4 keV is very narrow. If such an ion is revolving around a black hole, this line is effectively broadened as a result of the Doppler and gravitational redshift effects. The profile of the broaden spectrum contains information about the gravitational field of the black hole. In the presence of a regular magnetic field in the vicinity of a black holes the characteristics of the motion of charged ions are modified. In particular, their innermost stable circular orbits become closer to the horizon. The purpose of this work is to study how this effect modifies the spectrum broadening of lines emitted by such an ion. Our final goal is to analyze whether the change of the spectrum profiles can give us information about the magnetic field in the black hole vicinity.

Distorted Five-dimensional Electrically Charged Black Holes

We derive and study distorted, five-dimensional, electrically charged, non-extremal black holes on the example of a static and "axisymmetric" black hole distorted by external, electrically neutral matter. The solution satisfies Einstein-Maxwell equations which admits an $\mathbb{R}^1\times U(1)\times U(1)$ isometry group. The inner horizon remains regular if the distortion fields are finite and smooth at the outer horizon. There exists a certain duality transformation between the inner and the outer horizon surfaces which links surface gravity, electrostatic potential, and space-time curvature invariants calculated at the black hole horizons. The product of the inner and outer horizon areas depends only on the black hole's electric charge and the geometric mean of the areas is the upper (lower) limit for the inner (outer) horizon area. The horizon areas, electrostatic potential, and surface gravity satisfy the Smarr formula. We formulated the zeroth and the first laws of mechanics and thermodynamics of the distorted black hole and found a correspondence between the global and local forms of the first law. To illustrate the effect of distortion we consider the dipole-monopole and quadrupole-quadrupole distortion fields. The relative change in the Kretschamnn scalar due to the distortion is greater at the outer horizon than at the inner one. Calculating the maximal proper time of free fall from the outer to the inner horizons we show that the distortion can noticeably change the black hole interior. The change depends on type and strength of distortion fields. In particular, due to the types of distortion fields considered here the black hole horizons can either come arbitrarily close to or move far from each other.

Self-energy anomaly of an electric pointlike dipole in three-dimensional static spacetimes

We calculate the self-energy anomaly of a pointlike electric dipole located in a static $(2+1)$-dimensional curved spacetime. The energy functional for this problem is invariant under an infinite-dimensional (gauge) group of transformations parameterized by one scalar function of two variables. We demonstrate that the problem of the calculation of the self-energy anomaly for a pointlike dipole can be reduced to the calculation of quantum fluctuations of an effective two-dimensional Euclidean quantum field theory. We reduced the problem in question to the calculation of the conformal anomaly of an effective scalar field in two dimensions and obtained an explicit expression for the self-energy anomaly of an electric dipole in an asymptotically flat, regular $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetime which may have electrically neutral black-hole-like metrics with regular Killing horizon.

Critical escape velocity for a charged particle moving around a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole

We discuss charged particles motion in a spacetime of a weakly magnetized static non-rotating black hole. We study under which conditions a charged particle originally revolving around the black hole at a circular orbit after being kicked by another particle or photon can escape to infinity. We determine the escape velocity for particles at the innermost stable circular orbits and discuss the properties of particles moving with near-critical velocity. We show that in a general case such a motion is chaotic.

Scattering of circularly polarized light by a rotating black hole

We study scattering of polarized light by a rotating (Kerr) black hole of the mass M and the angular momentum J. In order to keep trace of the polarization dependence of photon trajectories one can use the following dimensionless parameter: $\varepsilon=\pm (ωM)^{-1}$, where $ω$ is the photon frequency and the sign + (-) corresponds to the right (left) circular polarization. We assume that $|\varepsilonl << 1$ and use the modified geometric optics approximation developed in [1], that is we include the first order in $\varepsilon$ polarization dependent terms into the eikonal equation. These corrections modify late time behavior of photons. We demonstrate that the photon moves along a null curve, which in the limit $\varepsilon=0$ becomes a null geodesic. We focus on the scattering problem for polarized light. Namely, we consider the following problems: (i) How does the photon bending angle depend on its polarization; (ii) How does position of the image of a point-like source depend on its polarization; (iii) How does the arrival time of photons depend on their polarization. We perform the numerical calculations that illustrate these effects for an extremely rotating black hole and discuss their possible applications.

Spinoptics in a stationary spacetime

The main goal of the present paper is to study how polarization of photons affects their motion in a gravitational field created by a rotating massive compact object. We study propagation of the circularly polarized beams of light in a stationary gravitational field. We use (3+1)-form of the Maxwell equations to derive a master equation for the propagation of monochromatic electromagnetic waves of the frequency $ω$ with a given helicity. We first analize its solutions in the high frequency approximation using the `standard' geometrical optics approach. After that we demonstrate how this `standard' approach can be modified in order to include the effect of the helicity of photons on their motion. Such an improved method reproduces the standard results of the geometrical optics at short distances. However, it modifies the asymptotic behavior of the circularly polarized beams in the late-time regime. We demonstrate that the corresponding equations for the circularly polarized beam can be effectively obtained by modification of the background geometry by including a small factor proportional to $ω^{-1}$ whose sign corresponds to photon helicity. We obtain the modified equations for circularly polarized rays by using such a `renormalization' procedure, and calculate the corresponding renormalization term for the Kerr geometry.

Geometric Properties of Static EMdL Horizons

We study non-degenerate and degenerate (extremal) Killing horizons of arbitrary geometry and topology within the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model with a Liouville potential (the EMdL model) in d-dimensional (d>=4) static space-times. Using Israel's description of a static space-time, we construct the EMdL equations and the space-time curvature invariants: the Ricci scalar, the square of the Ricci tensor, and the Kretschmann scalar. Assuming that space-time metric functions and the model fields are real analytic functions in the vicinity of a space-time horizon, we study behavior of the space-time metric and the fields near the horizon and derive relations between the space-time curvature invariants calculated on the horizon and geometric invariants of the horizon surface. The derived relations generalize the similar relations known for horizons of static four and 5-dimensional vacuum and 4-dimensional electrovacuum space-times. Our analysis shows that all the extremal horizon surfaces are Einstein spaces. We present necessary conditions for existence of static extremal horizons within the EMdL model.

Particle Dynamics in Weakly Charged Extreme Kerr Throat

We study dynamics of a test charged particle moving in a weakly charged extreme Kerr throat. Dynamical equations of the particle motion are solved in quadratures. We show explicitly that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime becomes reducible in the extreme Kerr throat geometry. Special types of motion of particles and light are discussed.

Distorted 5-dimensional vacuum black hole

In this paper we study how the distortion generated by a static and neutral distribution of external matter affects a 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. A solution representing a particular class of such distorted black holes admits an RxU(1)xU(1) isometry group. We show that there exists a certain duality transformation between the black hole horizon and a stretched singularity surfaces. The space-time near the distorted black hole singularity has the same topology and Kasner exponents as those of a 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. We calculate the maximal proper time of free fall of a test particle from the distorted black hole horizon to its singularity and find that, depending on the distortion, it can be less, equal to, or greater than that of a Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole of the same horizon area. This implies that due to the distortion, the singularity of a Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole can come close to its horizon. A relation between the Kretschmann scalar calculated on the horizon of a 5-dimensional static, asymmetric, distorted black hole and the trace of the square of the Ricci tensor of the horizon surface is derived.

Motion of charged particles near weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole

We study motion of a charged particle in the vicinity of a weakly magnetized Schwarzschild black hole and focus on its bounded trajectories lying in the black hole equatorial plane. If the Lorentz force, acting on the particle, is directed outward from the black hole, there exist two qualitatively different types of trajectories, one is a curly motion and another one is a trajectory without curls. We calculated the critical value of the magnetic field for the transition between these two types. If the magnetic field is greater than the critical one, for fixed values of the particle energy and angular momentum, the bounded trajectory has curls. The curls appear as a result of the gravitational drift. The greater the value of the magnetic field, the larger is the number of curls. We constructed an approximate analytical solution for a bounded trajectory and found the gravitational drift velocity of its guiding center.

Analysis of the Fisher solution

We study the $d$-dimensional Fisher solution which represents a static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat spacetime with a massless scalar field. The solution has two parameters, the mass and the "scalar charge." The Fisher solution has a naked curvature singularity which divides the spacetime manifold into two disconnected parts. The part which is asymptotically flat we call the {\em Fisher spacetime}, and another part we call the {\em Fisher universe}. The Schwarzschild-Tangherlini (ST) solution and the Fisher solution belong to the same theory and are dual to each other. The duality transformation acting in the parameter space maps the exterior region of the ST black hole into the Fisher spacetime which has a naked timelike singularity, and interior region of the black hole into the Fisher universe, which is an anisotropic expanding-contracting universe and which has two spacelike singularities representing its "Big Bang" and "Big Crunch". The Big Bang singularity and the singularity of the Fisher spacetime are {\em radially weak} in the sense that a 1-dimensional object moving along a timelike radial geodesic can arrive to the singularities intact. At the vicinity of the singularity the Fisher spacetime of nonzero mass has a region where its Misner-Sharp energy is negative. The Fisher universe has a marginally trapped surface corresponding to the state of its maximal expansion in the angular directions. These results and derived relations between geometric quantities of the Fisher spacetime, the Fisher universe, and the ST black hole may suggest that the massless scalar field transforms the black hole event horizon into the naked radially weak disjoint singularities of the Fisher spacetime and the Fisher universe which are "dual to the horizon."

Charged black strings in 5D Kaluza-Klein spacetime

We present a short review on the electric and magnetic black strings in 5D spacetime with one compact dimension. Linear static perturbations of these objects indicate presence of the threshold unstable mode. Analysis of the mode shows that the electric black string is less stable than a neutral one. The situation is opposite for the magnetic black string.

Interior of a Charged Distorted Black Hole

We study interior of a charged, non-rotating distorted black hole. We consider static and axisymmetric black holes, and focus on a special case when an electrically charged distorted solution is obtained by the Harrison-Ernst transformation from an uncharged one. We demonstrate that the Cauchy horizon of such black hole remains regular, provided the distortion is regular at the event horizon. The shape and the inner geometry of both the outer and inner (Cauchy) horizons are studied. We demonstrate that there exists a duality between the properties of the horizons. Proper time of a free fall of a test particle moving in the interior of the distorted black hole along the symmetry axis is calculated. We also study the property of the curvature in the inner domain between the horizons. Simple relations between the 4D curvature invariants and the Gaussian curvature of the outer and inner horizon surfaces are found.

Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D electrically charged black strings

We study the Gregory-Laflamme instability of 5D compactified, electrically charged black strings. We consider static, linear perturbations of these solutions and derive master equation for these perturbations. Using numerical analysis we search for the threshold unstable modes and derive the critical wave-length. The results are illustrated in the black string mass v.s. electric charge phase diagram. Similar diagram is constructed using global thermodynamic equilibrium argument applied to the charged string and 5D electrically charged black hole. The results derived illustrate that electric charge makes the black string less stable.

Interior of Distorted Black Holes

We study the interior of distorted static axisymmetric black holes. We obtain a general interior solution and study its asymptotics both near the horizon and singularity. As a special example, we apply the obtained results to the case of the so-called `caged' black holes.
