Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms III: abundance and incoherence

Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably ergodic, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose mapping classes form a subgroup of the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}(T^1S)$ which is isomorphic to $\mathcal{M}(S)$. At the same time we show that the totality of mapping classes which can be realized by partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms does not form a subgroup of $\mathcal{M}(T^1S)$. Finally, some of the examples on $T^1S$ are absolutely partially hyperbolic, stably ergodic and robustly non-dynamically coherent, disproving a conjecture by F. Rodriguez Hertz, J. Rodriguez Hertz and R. Ures.

Center foliation rigidity for partially hyperbolic toral diffeomorphisms

We study perturbations of a partially hyperbolic toral automorphism L which is diagonalizable over C and has a dense center foliation. For a small perturbation of L with a smooth center foliation we establish existence of a smooth leaf conjugacy to L. We also show that if a small perturbation of an ergodic irreducible L has smooth center foliation and is bi-Holder conjugate to L, then the conjugacy is smooth. As a corollary, we show that for any symplectic perturbation of such an L any bi-Holder conjugacy must be smooth. For a totally irreducible L with two-dimensional center, we establish a number of equivalent conditions on the perturbation that ensure smooth conjugacy to L.

Local rigidity of Lyapunov spectrum for toral automorphisms

We study the regularity of the conjugacy between an Anosov automorphism $L$ of a torus and its small perturbation. We assume that $L$ has no more than two eigenvalues of the same modulus and that $L^4$ is irreducible over $\mathbb Q$. We consider a volume-preserving $C^1$-small perturbation $f$ of $L$. We show that if Lyapunov exponents of $f$ with respect to the volume are the same as Lyapunov exponents of $L$, then $f$ is $C^{1+\text{Hölder}}$ conjugate to $L$. Further, we establish a similar result for irreducible partially hyperbolic automorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle.

Anomalous Anosov flows revisited

This paper is devoted to higher dimensional Anosov flows and consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate fiberwise Anosov flows on affine torus bundles which fiber over 3-dimensional Anosov flows. We provide a dichotomy result for such flows --- they are either suspensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms or the stable and unstable distributions have equal dimensions. In the second part, we give a new surgery type construction of Anosov flows, which yields non-transitive Anosov flows in all odd dimensions.

A numerical study of Gibbs $u$-measures for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb T^3$

We consider a hyperbolic automorphism $A\colon\mathbb T^3\to\mathbb T^3$ of the 3-torus whose 2-dimensional unstable distribution splits into weak and strong unstable subbundles. We unfold $A$ into two one-parameter families of Anosov diffeomorphisms --- a conservative family and a dissipative one. For diffeomorphisms in these families we numerically calculate the strong unstable manifold of the fixed point. Our calculations strongly suggest that the strong unstable manifold is dense in $\mathbb T^3$. Further, we calculate push-forwards of the Lebesgue measure on a local strong unstable manifold. These numeric data indicate that the sequence of push-forwards converges to the SRB measure.

Surgery for partially hyperbolic dynamical systems I. Blow-ups of invariant submanifolds

We suggest a method to construct new examples of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We begin with a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f\colon M\to M$ which leaves invariant a submanifold $N\subset M$. We assume that $N$ is an Anosov submanifold for $f$, that is, the restriction $f|_N$ is an Anosov diffeomorphism and the center distribution is transverse to $TN\subset TM$. By replacing each point in $N$ with the projective space (real or complex) of lines normal to $N$ we obtain the blow-up $\hat M$. Replacing $M$ with $\hat M$ amounts to a surgery on the neighborhood of $N$ which alters the topology of the manifold. The diffeomorphism $f$ induces a canonical diffeomorphism $\hat f\colon \hat M\to \hat M$. We prove that under certain assumptions on the local dynamics of $f$ at $N$ the diffeomorphism $\hat f$ is also partially hyperbolic. We also present some modifications such as the connected sum construction which allows to "paste together" two partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms to obtain a new one. Finally, we present several examples to which our results apply.

Bootstrap for local rigidity of Anosov automorphisms on the 3-torus

We establish a strong form of local rigidity for hyperbolic automorphisms of the 3-torus with real spectrum. Namely, let $L\colon\mathbb T^3\to\mathbb T^3$ be a hyperbolic automorphism of the 3-torus with real spectrum and let $f$ be a $C^1$ small perturbation of $L$. Then $f$ is smoothly ($C^\infty$) conjugate to $L$ if and only if obstructions to $C^1$ conjugacy given by the eigenvalues at periodic points of $f$ vanish. By combining our result and a local rigidity result of Kalinin and Sadovskaya for conformal automorphisms this completes the local rigidity program for hyperbolic automorphisms in dimension 3. Our work extends de la Llave-Marco-Moriyón 2-dimensional local rigidity theory.

Aspherical products which do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms

We show that the product of infranilmanifolds with certain aspherical closed manifolds do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. As a special case, we obtain that products of a nilmanifold and negatively curved manifolds of dimension at least 3 do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms.

Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms II: stably ergodic examples

We construct examples of robustly transitive and stably ergodic partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f$ on compact $3$-manifolds with fundamental groups of exponential growth such that $f^n$ is not homotopic to identity for all $n>0$. These provide counterexamples to a classification conjecture of Pujals.

New partially hyperbolic dynamical systems I

We propose a new method for constructing partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. As a demonstration of the method we show that there are simply connected closed manifolds that support partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.

Center Lyapunov exponents in partially hyperbolic dynamics

We survey a collection of recent results on center Lyapunov exponents of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We explain several ideas in simplified setups and formulate the general versions of results. We also pose some open questions.

On bundles that admit fiberwise hyperbolic dynamics

This paper is devoted to rigidity of smooth bundles which are equipped with fiberwise geometric or dynamical structure. We show that the fiberwise associated sphere bundle to a bundle whose leaves are equipped with (continuously varying) metrics of negative curvature is a topologically trivial bundle when either the base space is simply connected or, more generally, when the bundle is fiber homotopically trivial. We present two very different proofs of this result: a geometric proof and a dynamical proof. We also establish a number of rigidity results for bundles which are equipped with fiberwise Anosov dynamical systems. Finally, we present a number of examples which show that our results are sharp in certain ways or illustrate necessity of various assumptions.

The space of Anosov diffeomorphisms

We consider the space $\X$ of Anosov diffeomorphisms homotopic to a fixed automorphism $L$ of an infranilmanifold $M$. We show that if $M$ is the 2-torus $\mathbb T^2$ then $\X$ is homotopy equivalent to $\mathbb T^2$. In contrast, if dimension of $M$ is large enough, we show that $\X$ is rich in homotopy and has infinitely many connected components.

Local rigidity for Anosov automorphisms

We consider an irreducible Anosov automorphism L of a torus T^d such that no three eigenvalues have the same modulus. We show that L is locally rigid, that is, L is C^1 conjugate to any C^1-small perturbation f with the same periodic data. We also prove that toral automorphisms satisfying these assumptions are generic in SL(d,Z). Examples constructed in the Appendix by Rafael de la Llave show importance of the assumption on the eigenvalues.

Partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with compact center foliations

Let f:M->M be a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism such that all of its center leaves are compact. We prove that Sullivan's example of a circle foliation that has arbitrary long leaves cannot be the center foliation of f. This is proved by thorough study of the accessible boundaries of the center-stable and the center-unstable leaves. Also we show that a finite cover of f fibers over an Anosov toral automorphism if one of the following conditions is met: 1. the center foliation of f has codimension 2, or 2. the center leaves of f are simply connected leaves and the unstable foliation of f is one-dimensional.

Anosov diffeomorphisms constructed from $π_k(Diff(S^n))$

We construct Anosov diffeomorphisms on manifolds that are homeomorphic to infranilmanifolds yet have exotic smooth structures. These manifolds are obtained from standard infranilmanifolds by connected summing with certain exotic spheres. Our construction produces Anosov diffeomorphisms of high codimension on infranilmanifolds with irreducible exotic smooth structures.
