Topological singularities in periodic media: Ginzburg-Landau and core-radius approaches

We describe the emergence of topological singularities in periodic media within the Ginzburg-Landau model and the core-radius approach. The energy functionals of both models are denoted by $E_{\varepsilon,δ}$, where $\varepsilon$ represent the coherence length (in the Ginzburg-Landau model) or the core-radius size (in the core-radius approach) and $δ$ denotes the periodicity scale. We carry out the $Γ$-convergence analysis of $E_{\varepsilon,δ}$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$ and $δ=δ_{\varepsilon}\to 0$ in the $|\log\varepsilon|$ scaling regime, showing that the $Γ$-limit consists in the energy cost of finitely many vortex-like point singularities of integer degree. After introducing the scale parameter (upon extraction of subsequences) $$ λ=\min\Bigl\{1,\lim_{\varepsilon\to0} {|\log δ_{\varepsilon}|\over|\log{\varepsilon}|}\Bigr\}, $$ we show that in a sense we always have a separation-of-scale effect: at scales less than $\varepsilon^λ$ we first have a concentration process around some vortices whose location is subsequently optimized, while for scales larger than $\varepsilon^λ$ the concentration process takes place "after" homogenization.

Homogenization of immiscible compressible two--phase flow in random porous media

The paper deals with homogenization of a model problem describing an immiscible compressible two-phase flow in random statistically homogeneous porous media. We derive the effective (macroscopic) problem and prove the convergence of solutions. Our approach relies on stochastic two-scale convergence techniques, the realization-wise notion of stochastic two-scale convergence being used. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness arguments.

Homogenization of the linearized ionic transport equations in random porous media

In this paper we extend the homogenization results obtained in (G. Allaire, A. Mikelić, A. Piatnitski, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010), 123103) for a system of partial differential equations describing the transport of a N-component electrolyte in a dilute Newtonian solvent through a rigid periodic porous medium, to the case of random disperse porous media. We present a study of the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation in a random medium, establish convergence of the stochastic homogenization procedure and prove well-posedness of the two-scale homogenized equations. In addition, after separating scales, we prove that the effective tensor satisfies the so-called Onsager properties, that is the tensor is symmetric and positive definite. This result shows that the Onsager theory applies to random porous media. The strong convergence of the fluxes is also established.

A variational theory of convolution-type functionals

We provide a general treatment of perturbations of a class of functionals modeled on convolution energies with integrable kernel which approximate the $p$-th norm of the gradient as the kernel is scaled by letting a small parameter $\varepsilon$ tend to $0$. We first provide the necessary functional-analytic tools to show coerciveness in $L^p$. The main result is a compactness and integral-representation theorem which shows that limits of convolution-type energies is a standard local integral functional with $p$-growth defined on a Sobolev space. This result is applied to obtain periodic homogenization results, to study applications to functionals defined on point-clouds, to stochastic homogenization and to the study of limits of the related gradient flows.

Homogenization of biomechanical models of plant tissues with randomly distributed cells

In this paper homogenization of a mathematical model for biomechanics of a plant tissue with randomly distributed cells is considered. Mechanical properties of a plant tissue are modelled by a strongly coupled system of reaction-diffusion-convection equations for chemical processes in plant cells and cell walls, the equations of poroelasticity for elastic deformations of plant cell walls and middle lamella, and the Stokes equations for fluid flow inside the cells. The nonlinear coupling between the mechanics and chemistry is given by the dependence of elastic properties of plant tissue on densities of chemical substances as well as by the dependence of chemical reactions on mechanical stresses present in a tissue. Using techniques of stochastic homogenization we derive rigorously macroscopic model for plant tissue biomechanics with random distribution of cells. Strong stochastic two-scale convergence is shown to pass to the limit in the non-linear reaction terms. Appropriate meaning of the boundary terms is introduced to define the macroscopic equations with flux boundary conditions and transmission conditions on the microscopic scale.

Large Deviations for Markov jump processes in periodic and locally periodic environments

The paper deals with a family of jump Markov process defined in a medium with a periodic or locally periodic microstructure. We assume that the generator of the process is a zero order convolution type operator with rapidly oscillating locally periodic coefficient and, under natural ellipticity and localization conditions, show that the family satisfies the large deviation principle in the path space equipped with Skorokhod topology. The corresponding rate function is defined in terms of a family of auxiliary periodic spectral problems.

On the fundamental solution of heat and stochastic heat equations

We consider the generic divergence form second order parabolic equation with coefficients that are regular in the spatial variables and just measurable in time. We show that the spatial derivatives of its fundamental solution admit upper bounds that agree with the Aronson type estimate and only depend on the ellipticity constants of the equation and the L $\infty$ norm of the spatial derivatives of its coefficients. We also study the corresponding stochastic partial differential equations and prove that under natural assumptions on the noise the equation admits a mild solution, given by anticipating stochastic integration.

Homogenization of ferromagnetic energies on Poisson random sets in the plane

We prove that by scaling nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic energies defined on Poisson random sets in the plane we obtain an isotropic perimeter energy with a surface tension characterised by an asymptotic formula. The result relies on proving that cells with `very long' or `very short' edges of the corresponding Voronoi tessellation can be neglected. In this way we may apply Geometry Measure Theory tools to define a compact convergence, and a characterisation of metric properties of clusters of Voronoi cells using limit theorems for subadditive processes.

Homogenization of random convolution energies in heterogeneous and perforated domains

We prove a homogenization theorem for a class of quadratic convolution energies with random coefficients. Under suitably stated hypotheses of ergodicity and stationarity we prove that the $Γ$-limit of such energy is almost surely a deterministic quadratic Dirichlet-type integral functional, whose integrand can be characterized through an asymptotic formula. The proof of this characterization relies on results on the asymptotic behaviour of subadditive processes. The proof of the limit theorem uses a blow-up technique common for local energies, that can be extended to this `asymptotically-local' case. As a particular application we derive a homogenization theorem on random perforated domains.

Asymptotics of fundamental solutions for time fractional equations with convolution kernels

The paper deals with the large time asymptotic of the fundamental solution for a time fractional evolution equation for a convolution type operator. In this equation we use a Caputo time derivative of order $α$ with $α\in(0,1)$, and assume that the convolution kernel of the spatial operator is symmetric, integrable and shows a super-exponential decay at infinity. Under these assumptions we describe the point-wise asymptotic behavior of the fundamental solution in all space-time regions.

Homogenization of biased convolution type operators

This paper deals with homogenization of parabolic problems for integral convolution type operators with a non-symmetric jump kernel in a periodic elliptic medium. It is shown that the homogenization result holds in moving coordinates. We determine the corresponding effective velocity and prove that the limit operator is a second order parabolic operator with constant coefficients. We also consider the behaviour of the effective velocity in the case of small antisymmetric perturbations of a symmetric kernel.

Stochastic homogenization of convolution type operators

This paper deals with homogenization problem for convolution type non-local operators in random statistically homogeneous ergodic media. Assuming that the convolution kernel has a finite second moment and satisfies the uniform ellipticity and certain symmetry conditions, we prove the almost sure homogenization result and show that the limit operator is a second order elliptic differential operator with constant deterministic coefficients.

Homogenization of Levy-type operators with oscillating coefficients

The paper deals with homogenization of Levy-type operators with rapidly oscillating coefficients. We consider cases of periodic and random statistically homogeneous micro-structures and show that in the limit we obtain a Levy-operator. In the periodic case we study both symmetric and non-symmetric kernels whereas in the random case we only investigate symmetric kernels. We also address a nonlinear version of this homogenization problem.

Steady states, fluctuation-dissipation theorems and homogenization for diffusions in a random environment with finite range of dependence

Prolongating our previous paper on the Einstein relation, we study the motion of a particle diffusing in a random reversible environment when subject to a small external forcing. In order to describe the long time behavior of the particle, we introduce the notions of steady state and weak steady state. We establish the continuity of weak steady states for an ergodic and uniformly elliptic environment. When the environment has finite range of dependence, we prove the existence of the steady state and weak steady state and compute its derivative at a vanishing force. Thus we obtain a complete "Fluctuation- Dissipation Theorem" in this context as well as the continuity of the effective variance.

Point-wise estimates for nonlocal heat kernel of convolution type operators

The paper deals with point-wise estimates for the heat kernel of a nonlocal convolution type operator with a kernel that decays at least exponentially at infinity. It is shown that the large time behaviour of the heat kernel depends essentially on whether $|x|\ll t$, or $|x|\sim t$, or $|x|\gg t$. We obtain sharp point-wise upper bounds for the heat kernel in all these regions. In the first region the nonlocal heat kernel behaves like the classical one, while in the other regions we observe an essential difference.

Homogenization of biomechanical models for plant tissues

In this paper homogenization of a mathematical model for plant tissue biomechanics is presented. The microscopic model constitutes a strongly coupled system of reaction-diffusion-convection equations for chemical processes in plant cells, the equations of poroelasticity for elastic deformations of plant cell walls and middle lamella, and Stokes equations for fluid flow inside the cells. The chemical process in cells and the elastic properties of cell walls and middle lamella are coupled because elastic moduli depend on densities involved in chemical reactions, whereas chemical reactions depend on mechanical stresses. Using homogenization techniques we derive rigorously a macroscopic model for plant biomechanics. To pass to the limit in the nonlinear reaction terms, which depend on elastic strain, we prove the strong two-scale convergence of the displacement gradient and velocity field.

Stationary convection-diffusion equation in an infinite cylinder

We study the existence and uniqueness of a solution to a linear stationary convection-diffusion equation stated in an infinite cylinder, Neumann boundary condition being imposed on the boundary. We assume that the cylinder is a junction of two semi-infinite cylinders with two different periodic regimes. Depending on the direction of the effective convection in the two semi-infinite cylinders, we either get a unique solution, or one-parameter family of solutions, or even non-existence in the general case. In the latter case we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution.
