Probing Intergalactic Magnetic Fields with Simulations of Electromagnetic Cascades

We determine the effect of intergalactic magnetic fields on the distribution of high energy gamma rays by performing three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations of the development of gamma-ray-induced electromagnetic cascades in the magnetized intergalactic medium. We employ the so-called 'Large Sphere Observer' method to efficiently simulate blazar gamma ray halos. We study magnetic fields with a Batchelor spectrum and with maximal left- and right-handed helicities. We also consider the case of sources whose jets are tilted with respect to the line of sight. We verify the formation of extended gamma ray halos around the source direction, and observe spiral-like patterns if the magnetic field is helical. We apply the $Q$-statistics to the simulated halos to extract their spiral nature and also propose an alternative method, the $S$-statistics. Both methods provide a quantative way to infer the helicity of the intervening magnetic fields from the morphology of individual blazar halos for magnetic field strengths $B \gtrsim 10^{-15}\,{\rm G}$ and magnetic coherence lengths $L_{\rm c} \gtrsim 100\,{\rm Mpc}$. We show that the $S$-statistics has a better performance than the $Q$-statistics when assessing magnetic helicity from the simulated halos.

The Role of Plasma Instabilities in the Propagation of Gamma-Rays from Distant Blazars

The observation in the GeV band of distant blazars has been recently used to put constraints on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) and Extragalactic Magnetic Fields (EGMF). To support such claims one has to assume that the leptonic component of the electromagnetic cascade initiated by blazar gamma-rays is deflected away by strong enough EGMF, suppressing the signal in the Fermi window. Apart from magnetic fields, the development of such a cascade might be affected by plasma instabilities due to interactions with the ionized component of the Intergalactic Medium (IGM). In this paper we model the electromagnetic cascade through a Monte Carlo simulation in which both effects are taken into account separately, and we derive constraints on these scenarios from the combined Fermi-HESS data set. In the specific case of 1ES 0229+200 observations, we show that both explanations of the GeV flux suppression are compatible with the available data, specifically by assuming a magnetic field of $B \gtrsim 10^{-16}\,\rm{G}$ or an IGM temperature of $T \lesssim 5 \times 10^{4}\,\rm{K}$ along the line of sight. Future observations of the spectra of high redshift ($z\lesssim 1$) TeV objects will help to distinguish magnetic field and plasma effects on electromagnetic cascades in the IGM.

Evolution of Helical Cosmic Magnetic Fields as Predicted by Magnetohydrodynamic Closure Theory

We extend our recent derivation of the time evolution equations for the energy content of magnetic fields and turbulent motions for incompressible, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulence to include the case of nonvanishing helicity. These equations are subsequently numerically integrated in order to predict the present day primordial magnetic field strength and correlation length, depending on its initial helicity and magnetic energy density. We find that all prior analytic predictions for helical magnetic fields, such as the epoch when they become maximally helical and their subsequent growth of correlation length L ~ a^{1/3} and decrease of magnetic field strength B ~ a^{-1/3} with scale factor a, are well confirmed by the simulations. An initially fully helical primordial magnetic field is a factor 4 10^4 stronger at the present epoch then its nonhelical counterpart when generated during the electroweak epoch.

Time Evolution of the Large-Scale Tail of Nonhelical Primordial Magnetic Fields with Back-Reaction of the Turbulent Medium

We present a derivation of the time evolution equations for the energy content of nonhelical magnetic fields and the accompanying turbulent flows from first principles of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics in the general framework of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. This is then applied to the early Universe, i.e., the evolution of primordial magnetic fields. Numerically integrating the equations, we find that most of the energy is concentrated at an integral wavenumber scale k_I where the turbulence turn over time equals the Hubble time. At larger length scales L, i.e., smaller wavenumbers q = 2 π/ L << k_I, independent of the assumed turbulent flow power spectrum, mode-mode coupling tends to develop a small q magnetic field tail with a Batchelor spectrum proportional to the fourth inverse power of L and therefore a scaling for the magnetic field of B ~ L^(-5/2).

Lorentz Invariance Violation and Chemical Composition of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

Motivated by experimental indications of a significant presence of heavy nuclei in the cosmic ray flux at ultra high energies ($\gtrsim 10^{19} \eV$), we consider the effects of Planck scale suppressed Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) on the propagation of cosmic ray nuclei. In particular we focus on LIV effects on the photodisintegration of nuclei onto the background radiation fields. After a general discussion of the behavior of the relevant quantities, we apply our formalism to a simplified model where the LIV parameters of the various nuclei are assumed to kinematically result from a single LIV parameter for the constituent nucleons, $η$, and we derive constraints on $η$. Assuming a nucleus of a particular species to be actually present at $10^{20}$ eV the following constraints can be placed: $-3\times10^{-2} \lesssim η\lesssim 4$ for $^{56}$Fe, $-2\times10^{-3} \lesssim η\lesssim 3\times10^{-2}$ for $^{16}$O and $-7\times10^{-5} \lesssim η\lesssim 1\times10^{-4}$ for $^{4}$He, respectively.
