Higgs inflation in Einstein-Cartan gravity

We study inflation driven by the Higgs field in the Einstein-Cartan formulation of gravity. In this theory, the presence of the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with the Higgs field non-minimally coupled to them leads to three additional coupling constants. For a broad range of parameters, we find that inflation is both possible and consistent with observations. In most cases, the spectral index is given by $n_s=1-2/N_\star$ (with $N_\star$ the number of e-foldings) whereas the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can vary between about $10^{-10}$ and $1$. Thus, there are scenarios of Higgs inflation in the Einstein-Cartan framework for which the detection of gravitational waves from inflation is possible in the near future. In certain limits, the known models of Higgs inflation in the metric and Palatini formulations of gravity are reproduced. Finally, we discuss the robustness of inflationary dynamics against quantum corrections due to the scalar and fermion fields.

Matter matters in Einstein-Cartan gravity

We study scalar, fermionic and gauge fields coupled nonminimally to gravity in the Einstein-Cartan formulation. We construct a wide class of models with nondynamical torsion whose gravitational spectra comprise only the massless graviton. Eliminating non-propagating degrees of freedom, we derive an equivalent theory in the metric formulation of gravity. It features contact interactions of a certain form between and among the matter and gauge currents. We also discuss briefly the inclusion of curvature-squared terms.

Einstein-Cartan gravity, matter, and scale-invariant generalization

We study gravity coupled to scalar and fermion fields in the Einstein-Cartan framework. We discuss the most general form of the action that contains terms of mass dimension not bigger than four, leaving out only contributions quadratic in curvature. By resolving the theory explicitly for torsion, we arrive at an equivalent metric theory containing additional six-dimensional operators. This lays the groundwork for cosmological studies of the theory. We also perform the same analysis for a no-scale scenario in which the Planck mass is eliminated at the cost of adding an extra scalar degree of freedom. Finally, we outline phenomenological implications of the resulting theories, in particular to inflation and dark matter production.

Standard Model Meets Gravity: Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Inflation

We propose a model for combining the Standard Model (SM) with gravity. It relies on a non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to the Ricci scalar and on the Palatini formulation of gravity. Without introducing any new degrees of freedom in addition to those of the SM and the graviton, this scenario achieves two goals. First, it generates the electroweak symmetry breaking by a non-perturbative gravitational effect. In this way, it does not only address the hierarchy problem but opens up the possibility to calculate the Higgs mass. Second, the model incorporates inflation at energies below the onset of strong-coupling of the theory. Provided that corrections due to new physics above the scale of inflation are not unnaturally large, we can relate inflationary parameters to data from collider experiments.

Quantum Effects in Palatini Higgs Inflation

We study quantum effects in Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation of gravity, in which the metric and connection are treated as independent variables. We exploit the fact that the cutoff, above which perturbation theory breaks down, is higher than the scale of inflation. Unless new physics above the cutoff leads to unnaturally large corrections, we can directly connect low-energy physics and inflation. On the one hand, the lower bound on the top Yukawa coupling due to collider experiments leads to an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to gravity: $ξ\lesssim 10^8$. On the other hand, the Higgs potential can only support successful inflation if $ξ\gtrsim 10^6$. This leads to a fairly strict upper bound on the top Yukawa coupling of $0.925$ (defined in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$-scheme at the energy scale $173.2\,\text{GeV}$) and constrains the inflationary prediction for the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Additionally, we compare our findings to metric Higgs inflation.

Unveiling complex vector dark matter by magnetic field

We discuss the possibility that dark matter is made of a new complex massive vector field with a global $U(1)$-symmetry. The field interacts with the Standard Model via coupling to the gauge field of the hypercharge group. We study classical homogeneous configurations arising in the theory. Some of these configurations include magnetic components of the Standard Model electromagnetic field tensor. This opens a possibility to relate the origin of possible primordial magnetic fields to the cosmological evolution of vector dark matter condensates composed of magnetic bosons.

Dilaton-assisted generation of the Fermi scale from the Planck scale

In scale-invariant theories of gravity the Planck mass $M_P$, which appears due to spontaneous symmetry breaking, can be the only scale at the classical level. It was argued that the second scale can be generated by a quantum non-perturbative gravitational effect. The new scale, associated with the Higgs vacuum expectation value, can be orders of magnitude below $M_P$, leading to the hierarchy between the Fermi and the Planck scales. We study a theory in which the non-perturbative effect is sensitive both to the physics at energy scales as high as $M_P$ and to the low-energy, Standard Model physics. This makes it possible to constrain the mechanism from experiment. We find that the crucial ingredients of the mechanism are non-minimal coupling of the scalar fields to gravity, the approximate Weyl invariance at high energies, and the metastability of the low-energy vacuum.

Review of non-topological solitons in theories with $U(1)$-symmetry

We provide a review of non-topological solitonic solutions arising in theories with a complex scalar field and global or gauge $U(1)$-symmetry. It covers Q-balls, homogeneous charged scalar condensates, and nonlinear localized holes and bulges in a classically stable condensate. A historical overview is followed by the discussion of properties of solutions, including their stability, from different perspectives. Solitons in models with additional massive degrees of freedom are also revisited, and their relation to one-field Q-balls is showed. We also discuss theories with a gauge field giving rise to gauged Q-balls and theories with dynamical gravity giving rise to boson stars.

Solving puzzles of spontaneously broken spacetime symmetries

We establish a classical analog of the Nambu-Goldstone theorem for spontaneous breaking of spacetime symmetries. It provides a counting rule for independent Nambu-Goldstone fields and states which of them are gapped. We demonstrate that only those symmetry group generators give rise to independent Nambu-Goldstone fields that act non-trivially on a vacuum at the origin of coordinates. Other generators give rise to auxiliary fields that must be excluded from a theory by the means of inverse Higgs constraints. The physical meaning of the inverse Higgs phenomenon and an application of our results to theories of massive gravity are discussed.

Gravity, Scale Invariance and the Hierarchy Problem

Combining the quantum scale invariance with the absence of new degrees of freedom above the electroweak scale leads to stability of the latter against perturbative quantum corrections. Nevertheless, the hierarchy between the weak and the Planck scales remains unexplained. We argue that this hierarchy can be generated by a non-perturbative effect relating the low energy and the Planck-scale physics. The effect is manifested in the existence of an instanton configuration contributing to the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. We analyze such configurations in several toy models and in a phenomenologically viable theory encompassing the Standard Model and General Relativity in a scale-invariant way. Dynamical gravity and a non-minimal coupling of it to the Higgs field play a crucial role in the mechanism.

Conformal symmetry: towards the link between the Fermi and the Planck scales

If the mass of the Higgs boson is put to zero, the classical Lagrangian of the Standard Model (SM) becomes conformally invariant (CI). Taking into account quantum non-perturbative QCD effects violating CI leads to electroweak symmetry breaking with the scale $v \sim Λ_{\rm QCD}\sim 100$ MeV which is three orders of magnitude less than it is observed experimentally. Depending on the mass of the top quark, the radiative corrections may lead to another minimum of the effective potential for the Higgs field with $v \gtrsim M_P$, where $M_P$ is the Planck mass, at least $16$ orders of magnitude more than it is observed. We explore yet another source of CI breaking associated with gravity. We suggest a non-perturbative mechanism that can reproduce the observed hierarchy between the Fermi and the Planck scales, by constructing an instanton configuration contributing to the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. The crucial role in this effect is played by the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs field to the Ricci scalar and by the approximate Weyl invariance of the theory for large values of the Higgs field.

EPFL Lectures on General Relativity as a Quantum Field Theory

These notes are an introduction to General Relativity as a Quantum Effective Field Theory, following the material given in a short course on the subject at EPFL. The intent is to develop General Relativity starting from a quantum field theoretic viewpoint, and to introduce some of the techniques needed to understand the subject.

On stability of electroweak vacuum during inflation

We study Coleman-De Luccia tunneling of the Standard Model Higgs field during inflation in the case when the electroweak vacuum is metastable. We verify that the tunneling rate is exponentially suppressed. The main contribution to the suppression is the same as in flat space-time. We analytically estimate the corrections due to the expansion of the universe and an effective mass term in the Higgs potential that can be present at inflation.

Towards the correspondence between Q-clouds and sphalerons

Non-linear classical equations of motion may admit degenerate solutions at fixed charges. While the solutions with lower energies are classically stable, the ones with larger energies are unstable and refereed as Q-clouds. We consider a theory in which the homogeneous charged condensate is classically stable and argue that Q-clouds correspond to sphalerons between the stable Q-balls and the condensate. For the model with analytic solution, we present Arrhenius formula for the quantum production of Q-balls from the condensate at large temperatures.
