A note on the theory of fast money flow dynamics

The gauge theory of arbitrage was introduced by Ilinski in [arXiv:hep-th/9710148] and applied to fast money flows in [arXiv:cond-mat/9902044]. The theory of fast money flow dynamics attempts to model the evolution of currency exchange rates and stock prices on short, e.g.\ intra-day, time scales. It has been used to explain some of the heuristic trading rules, known as technical analysis, that are used by professional traders in the equity and foreign exchange markets. A critique of some of the underlying assumptions of the gauge theory of arbitrage was presented by Sornette in [arXiv:cond-mat/9804045]. In this paper, we present a critique of the theory of fast money flow dynamics, which was not examined by Sornette. We demonstrate that the choice of the input parameters used in [arXiv:cond-mat/9902044] results in sinusoidal oscillations of the exchange rate, in conflict with the results presented in [arXiv:cond-mat/9902044]. We also find that the dynamics predicted by the theory are generally unstable in most realistic situations, with the exchange rate tending to zero or infinity exponentially.

Laplace transform analysis of a multiplicative asset transfer model

We analyze a simple asset transfer model in which the transfer amount is a fixed fraction $f$ of the giver's wealth. The model is analyzed in a new way by Laplace transforming the master equation, solving it analytically and numerically for the steady-state distribution, and exploring the solutions for various values of $f\in(0,1)$. The Laplace transform analysis is superior to agent-based simulations as it does not depend on the number of agents, enabling us to study entropy and inequality in regimes that are costly to address with simulations. We demonstrate that Boltzmann entropy is not a suitable (e.g. non-monotonic) measure of disorder in a multiplicative asset transfer system and suggest an asymmetric stochastic process that is equivalent to the asset transfer model.

Application of the time-dependent charge asymmetry method for longitudinal position determination in prototype proportional chambers for the PANDA experiment

The PANDA collaboration intends to build a state-of-the-art detector to study the physics of antiproton annihilation in the charm mass region at the future FAIR facility at GSI, Darmstadt. One major part of the PANDA detector is the straw tube tracker. It will consist of about 6000 individual straws grouped in 11 double layers and filled with an Ar+10%CO_2 gas mixture. The required radial spatial resolution is about 150 micron. Two different methods are considered for longitudinal coordinate measurements - skewed double layers and a novel method based on the time-dependent charge asymmetry. The latter method is presented in this article.
