Channeling and radiation of electrons and positrons in diamond hetero-crystals

We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crystal from the side of substrate or from the side of periodically bent crystal. The predictions made are important for design and practical realization of new crystalline undulators.

Planar Channeling of 855 MeV Electrons in Silicon: Monte-Carlo Simulations

A new Monte Carlo code for the simulation of the channeling of ultrarelativistic charged projectiles in single crystals is presented. A detailed description of the underlying physical model and the computation algorithm is given. First results obtained with the code for the channeling of 855 MeV electrons in Silicon crystal are presented. The dechanneling lengths for (100), (110) and (111) crystallographic planes are estimated. In order to verify the code, the dependence of the intensity of the channeling radiation on the crystal dimension along the beam direction is calculated. A good agreement of the obtained results with recent experimental data is observed.

Modeling of nanoparticle coatings for medical applications

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been shown to possess properties beneficial for the treatment of cancerous tumors by acting as radiosensitizers for both photon and ion radiation. Blood circulation time is usually increased by coating the AuNPs with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) ligands. The effectiveness of the PEG coating, however, depends on both the ligand surface density and length of the PEG molecules, making it important to understand the structure of the coating. In this paper the thickness, ligand surface density, and density of the PEG coating is studied with classical molecular dynamics using the software package MBN Explorer. AuNPs consisting of 135 atoms (approximately 1.4 nm diameter) in a water medium have been studied with the number of PEG ligands varying between 32 and 60. We find that the thickness of the coating is only weakly dependent on the surface ligand density and that the degree of water penetration increased when there is a smaller number of attached ligands.

Stable propagation of a modulated particle beam in a crystal channel

The propagation of a modulated beam of charged particles in a planar crystal channel is investigated. It is demonstrated that the beam preserves its modulation at sufficiently large penetration depths to ensure the feasibility of using a crystalline undulator as a coherent source of hard X rays. This finding is a crucial milestone in developing a new type of lasers radiating in the hard X ray and gamma ray range.

One-dimensional Model of a Gamma Klystron

A new scheme for amplification of coherent gamma rays is proposed. The key elements are crystalline undulators - single crystals with periodically bent crystallographic planes exposed to a high energy beam of charged particles undergoing channeling inside the crystals. The scheme consists of two such crystals separated by a vacuum gap. The beam passes the crystals successively. The particles perform undulator motion inside the crystals following the periodic shape of the crystallographic planes. Gamma rays passing the crystals parallel to the beam get amplified due to interaction with the particles inside the crystals. The term `gamma klystron' is proposed for the scheme because its operational principles are similar to those of the optical klystron. A more simple one-crystal scheme is considered as well for the sake of comparison. It is shown that the gamma ray amplification in the klystron scheme can be reached at considerably lower particle densities than in the one-crystal scheme, provided that the gap between the crystals is sufficiently large.

Phase transitions in fullerenes: Fragmentation and reassembly of the carbon cage

Phase transition in fullerenes C60 and C240 are investigated by means of constant-temperature molecular dynamics simulations. In the phase transition region, the assembly (and fragmentation) of the C60 cage from (and to) the gaseous state is demonstrated via the dynamical coexistence of two phases. In this critical region, the fullerene system is seen to continuously oscillate between the carbon cage (the solid phase) and the state of carbon dimers and short chains (the gas phase). These oscillations correspond to consecutive disintegration and formation of the fullerene. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent heat capacity of the fullerene features a prominent peak, signifying the finite system analogue of a first-order phase transition. The simulations were conducted for 500 ns using a topologically-constrained pairwise forcefield which was developed for this work. Results of the simulations were supplemented by a statistical mechanics analysis to account for entropy and pressure corrections, corresponding to experimental conditions. These corrections lead to a phase transition temperature of 3800-4200 K for pressure 10-100 kPa, in good agreement with available experimental values.

Ion-beam therapy: from electron production in tissue like media to DNA damage estimations

Radiation damage induced by ion beams is traditionally treated at different levels of theoretical approaches, for the different scales and mechanisms involved. We present here details of a combined approach that, from a method at a nanoscopic scale, attempts to merge with higher scales existing results, by tuning the analytical method employed when extended to larger scale and so yielding a consistent picture of the entire process. Results will show the possibility to get a good agreement with macroscale methods and, on the other hand, to produce a reliable electron energy spectra to be used for DNA damage estimations.

Comparative study of metal cluster fission in Hartree-Fock and LDA

Fission of doubly charged metal clusters is studied using the open-shell two-center deformed jellium Hartree-Fock model and Local Density Approximation. Results of calculations of the electronic structure and fission barriers for the symmetric and asymmetric channels associated with the following processes Na_{10}^{2+} --> Na_{7}^{+} + Na_{3}^{+}, Na_{18}^{2+} --> Na_{15}^{+} + Na_{3}^{+} and Na_{18}^{2+} --> 2 Na_{9}^{+} are presented. The role of the exact exchange and many-body correlation effects in metal clusters fission is analysed. It is demonstrated that the influence of many-electron correlation effects on the height of the fission barrier is more profound if the barrier arises nearby or beyond the scission point. The importance of cluster deformation effects in the fission process is elucidated with the use of the overlapping-spheroids shape parametrization allowing one an independent variation of deformations in the parent and daughter clusters.
