Measurement-induced entanglement entropy of gravitational wave detections

Research on the projective measurement of gravitons increasingly supports Dysons conclusions that the detection of single gravitons is not physically possible. It is therefore prudent to consider alternative signatures of non-classicality in gravitational wave detections to determine if gravity is quantized. Coincident multiple detector operations make it possible to consider the bipartite measurement-induced entanglement, in the detection process, as a signature of non-classicality. By developing a model of measurement-induced entanglement, based on a fixed number of gravitons for the bipartite system, we demonstrate that the entanglement entropy is on the order of a few percent of the mean number of gravitons interacting with the detectors. The bipartite measurement-induced entanglement is part of the detection process, which avoids the challenges associated with developing signatures of production-induced entanglement, due to the extremely low gravitational wave detector efficiencies. The calculation of normalized measurement-induced entanglement entropy demonstrates the potential of developing physically meaningful signatures of non-classicality based on bipartite detections of gravitational radiation. This result is in stark contrast to the discouraging calculations based on single-point detections.

Gravito-optics and intensity correlations for binary inspiral signal detections

We examine the correlation functions associated with intensity interferometry and gravito-optics of gravitational wave signals from compact binary coalescences. Previous theoretical studies of the gravito-optics of gravitational waves has concentrated on the characterization of both the classical and the non-classical properties of signals from cosmological sources in the early Universe. These previous works assume a periodic signal similar to the signals studied widely in optics and quantum optics and do not apply to transient signals. We develop the gravito-optics of intensity correlations for descriptions of the detection of transient signals from compact binary coalescences and apply these methods to calculate the two-point intensity correlations for the gravitational wave discovery. We also discuss the necessary theoretical work required for the description of the quantum gravito-optics of intensity correlations in the detection of signals from binary inspirals.

Gravity's light in the shadow of the Moon

In this essay we look at the possibility of vacuum production of very low frequency electromagnetic radiation from a gravitational wave background (i.e. gravity's light). We also propose that this counterpart electromagnetic radiation should be detectable by a lunar orbiting satellite which is periodically occulted by the Moon (i.e. in the shadow of the Moon). For concreteness we consider the possibility of detection of both the gravitational wave and hypothesized electromagnetic radiation counterpart from the supernova core collapse of Betelgeuse.

Low frequency electromagnetic radiation coming from gravitational waves generated by neutron stars

We investigate the possibility of observing very low frequency (VLF) electromagnetic radiation produced from the vacuum by gravitational waves. We review the calculations leading to the possibility of vacuum conversion of gravitational waves into electromagnetic waves and show how this process evades the well-known prohibition against particle production from gravitational waves. Using Newman-Penrose scalars, we estimate the luminosity of this proposed electromagnetic counterpart radiation coming from gravitational waves produced by neutron star oscillations. The detection of electromagnetic counterpart radiation would provide an indirect way of observing gravitational radiation with future spacecraft missions, especially lunar orbiting probes.
