The Voronoi tessellation method in astronomy

The Voronoi tessellation is a natural way of space segmentation, which has many applications in various fields of science and technology, as well as in social sciences and visual art. The varieties of the Voronoi tessellation methods are commonly used in computational fluid dynamics, computational geometry, geolocation and logistics, game dev programming, cartography, engineering, liquid crystal electronic technology, machine learning, etc. The very innovative results were obtained in astronomy, namely for a large-scale galaxy distribution and cosmic web pattern, for revealing the quasi-periodicity in a pencil-beam survey, for a description of constraints on the isotropic cosmic microwave background and the explosion scenario likely supernova events, for image processing, adaptive smoothing, segmentation, for signal-to-noise ratio balancing, for spectrography data analysis as well as in the moving-mesh cosmology simulation. We briefly describe these results, paying more attention to the practical application of the Voronoi tessellation related to the spatial large-scale galaxy distribution.

Cosmic voids detection without density measurements

Cosmic voids are effective cosmological probes to discriminate among competing world models. Their identification is generally based on density or geometry criteria that, because of their very nature, are prone to shot noise. We propose two void finders that are based on dynamical criterion to select voids in Lagrangian coordinates and minimise the impact of sparse sampling. The first approach exploits the Zel'dovich approximation to trace back in time the orbits of galaxies located in voids and their surroundings, the second uses the observed galaxy-galaxy correlation function to relax the objects' spatial distribution to homogeneity and isotropy. In both cases voids are defined as regions of the negative velocity divergence, that can be regarded as sinks of the back-in-time streamlines of the mass tracers. To assess the performance of our methods we used a dark matter halo mock catalogue CoDECS, and compared the results with those obtained with the ZOBOV void finder. We find that the void divergence profiles are less scattered than the density ones and, therefore, their stacking constitutes a more accurate cosmological probe. The significance of the divergence signal in the central part of voids obtained from both our finders is 60% higher than for overdensity profiles in the ZOBOV case. The ellipticity of the stacked void measured in the divergence field is closer to unity, as expected, than what is found when using halo positions. Therefore our void finders are complementary to the existing methods, that should contribute to improve the accuracy of void-based cosmological tests.

Relaxation of Blazar Induced Pair Beams in Cosmic Voids

The stability properties of a low density ultra relativistic pair beam produced in the intergalactic medium by multi-TeV gamma-ray photons from blazars are analyzed. The problem is relevant for probes of magnetic field in cosmic voids through gamma-ray observations. In addition, dissipation of such beams could affect considerably the thermal history of the intergalactic medium and structure formation. We use a Monte Carlo method to quantify the properties of the blazar induced electromagnetic shower, in particular the bulk Lorentz factor and the angular spread of the pair beam generated by the shower, as a function of distance from the blazar itself. We then use linear and nonlinear kinetic theory to study the stability of the pair beam against the growth of electrostatic plasma waves, employing the Monte Carlo results for our quantitative estimates. We find that the fastest growing mode, like any perturbation mode with even a very modest component perpendicular to the beam direction, cannot be described in the reactive regime. Due to the effect of non-linear Landau damping, which suppresses the growth of plasma oscillations, the beam relaxation timescale is found significantly longer than the inverse Compton loss time. Finally, density inhomogeneities associated with cosmic structure induce loss of resonance between the beam particles and plasma oscillations, strongly inhibiting their growth. We conclude that relativistic pair beams produced by blazars in the intergalactic medium are stable on timescales long compared to the electromagnetic cascade's. There appears to be little or no effect of pair-beams on the intergalactic medium.

UHECRs deflections in the IRAS PSCz catalogue based models of extragalactic magnetic field

We present an investigation of the propagation of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) in extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF). We use the IRAS PSCz catalogue in order to reconstruct EGMF taking into account power-law dependence between the magnetic field and the infrared luminosity density. Contrary to the previous works [11] the normalization parameters have been estimated according to the observable values of magnetic field of the galaxy clusters (B_GC = 0.3 - 2 microG) and assessed values of field in the voids of the Local Universe (B_Void = 1 pG - 100 pG). We construct the full-sky maps of expected deflection angles of UHE protons with the arrival energies E = 100 EeV and E = 40 EeV in the reconstructed EGMF for two boundary cases of "strong" (B_GC=2 microG, B_Void = 100 pG) and "weak" (B_GC=0.3 microG, B_Void = 1 pG) magnetic fields. It is found that average deflections of protons with observable energies above 40 EeV and maximum energy in sources E_max = 10 ZeV are unimportant (comparable with the errors of modern detectors) only in the case of "weak" EGMF model.
