Coercive quadratic converse ISS Lyapunov theorems for linear analytic systems

We derive converse Lyapunov theorems for input-to-state stability (ISS) of linear infinite-dimensional analytic systems. While we show that ISS in general does not imply the existence of a coercive quadratic ISS Lyapunov function, even if the input operator is bounded, we prove that indeed quadratic ISS Lyapunov functions always exist for $p$-admissible input operators with $p<2$, provided the semigroup is similar to a contraction on a Hilbert space. The constructions are semi-explicit and rely on classical results on analytic semigroups and similarity to contractive ones. In the case of self-adjoint generators, they coincide with the canonical Lyapunov function being the norm squared.

Data-Driven Stabilizing Controller Design for Linear Infinite Networks

We propose a direct data-driven method for controller synthesis of infinite networks composed of unknown linear time-invariant subsystems. Using a single set of noise-corrupted input-state trajectories collected from each subsystem, and provided that certain linear matrix inequalities hold, each subsystem is rendered exponentially input-to-state stable (eISS) by locally constructing an eISS control Lyapunov function together with an exponentially input-to-state stabilizing feedback controller. We then compose these local components under a compositional small-gain condition in infinite-dimensional spaces to obtain a global control Lyapunov function and an associated stabilizing controller, ensuring uniform global exponential stability of the infinite network. The approach is validated on a physical case study with unknown dynamics.

Input-to-state stability in integral norms for linear infinite-dimensional systems

We study integral-to-integral input-to-state stability for infinite-dimensional linear systems with inputs and trajectories in $L^p$-spaces. We start by developing the corresponding admissibility theory for linear systems with unbounded input operators. While input-to-state stability is typically characterised by exponential stability and finite-time admissibility, we show that this equivalence does not extend directly to integral norms. For analytic semigroups, we establish a precise characterisation using maximal regularity theory. Additionally, we provide direct Lyapunov theorems and construct Lyapunov functions for $L^p$-$L^q$-ISS and demonstrate the results with examples, including diagonal systems and diffusion equations.

Data-Driven Global Stabilization of Unknown Infinite Networks

This paper develops a direct data-driven framework for infinite networks with unknown nonlinear polynomial subsystems, enabling the synthesis of controllers that ensure the entire network is uniformly globally asymptotically stable (UGAS). To address scalability challenges arising from high dimensionality, we develop a data-driven approach to construct an input-to-state stable (ISS) Lyapunov function and its corresponding controller for each unknown subsystem using only a single set of noise-corrupted input-state trajectories collected from that subsystem. Once each subsystem admits a data-driven ISS Lyapunov function, we leverage a compositional small-gain framework for infinite-dimensional spaces to construct a global control Lyapunov function and its associated controller, thereby ensuring UGAS of the entire infinite network. The effectiveness of the proposed data-driven approach is demonstrated through three case studies, including infinite networks of spacecraft, Lorenz chaotic systems, and an academic example with a state-dependent control input matrix.

A superposition approach for the ISS Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem with pointwise dissipation

We show that the existence of a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) with pointwise dissipation (i.e. dissipation in terms of the current solution norm) suffices for input-to-state stability, provided that uniform global stability can also be ensured using the same LKF. To this end, we develop a stability theory, in which the behavior of solutions is not assessed through the classical norm but rather through a specific LKF, which may provide significantly tighter estimates. We discuss the advantages of our approach by means of an example.

Lyapunov characterization of boundedness of reachability sets for infinite-dimensional systems

We prove a converse Lyapunov theorem for boundedness of reachability sets for a general class of control systems whose flow is Lipschitz continuous on compact intervals with respect to trajectory-dominated inputs. We show that this condition is satisfied by many semi-linear evolution equations. For ordinary differential equations, as a consequence of our results, we obtain a converse Lyapunov theorem for forward completeness, without a priori restrictions on the magnitude of inputs.

Lyapunov methods for input-to-state stability of time-varying evolution equations

We prove that (local) input-to-state stability ((L)ISS) and integral input-to-state stability (iISS) of time-varying infinite-dimensional systems in abstract spaces follows from the existence of a {corresponding} Lyapunov function. In particular, input-to-state stability of linear time-varying control systems in Hilbert spaces with bounded input operators is discussed. Methods for the construction of non-coercive LISS/iISS Lyapunov functions are presented for a certain class of time-varying semi-linear evolution equations. Two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.

Characterization of input-to-output stability for infinite-dimensional systems

We prove a superposition theorem for input-to-output stability (IOS) of a broad class of nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems with outputs including both continuous-time and discrete-time systems. It contains, as a special case, the superposition theorem for input-to-state stability (ISS) of infinite-dimensional systems and the IOS superposition theorem for systems of ordinary differential equations known from the literature. To achieve this result, we introduce and examine several novel stability and attractivity concepts for infinite-dimensional systems with outputs: We prove criteria for the uniform limit property for systems with outputs, several of which are new already for systems with full-state output, we provide superposition theorems for systems which satisfy both the output Lagrange stability (OL) and IOS, give a sufficient condition for OL and characterize ISS in terms of IOS and input/output-to-state stability. Finally, by means of counterexamples, we illustrate the challenges appearing on the way of extension of the superposition theorems from the literature to infinite-dimensional systems with outputs.

Sampled-data and event-triggered control of globally Lipschitz infinite-dimensional systems

We show that if a linear infinite-dimensional system is exponentially stabilizable by compact feedback, it is also stabilizable by means of a sampled-data feedback that is fed through a globally Lipschitz nonlinearity, provided that the sector bound for the nonlinearity and the sampling time is small enough. Next we develop a switching-based event-triggered control scheme stabilizing the system with a reduced number of switching events. We demonstrate our results on an example of finite-dimensional stabilization of a Sturm-Liouville parabolic system.

Modeling and stability analysis of live systems with time-varying dimension

A major limitation of the classical control theory is the assumption that the state space and its dimension do not change with time. This prevents analyzing and even formalizing the stability and control problems for open multi-agent systems whose agents may enter or leave the network, industrial processes where the sensors or actuators may be exchanged frequently, smart grids, etc. In this work, we propose a framework of live systems that covers a rather general class of systems with a time-varying state space. We argue that input-to-state stability is a proper stability notion for this class of systems, and many of the classic tools and results, such as Lyapunov methods and superposition theorems, can be extended to this setting.

Infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems with a stationary interface

We consider two systems of two conservation laws that are defined on complementary, one-dimensional spatial intervals and coupled by an interface as a single port-Hamiltonian system. In case of a fixed interface position, we characterize the boundary and interface conditions for which the associated port-Hamiltonian operator generates a contraction semigroup. Furthermore, we present sufficient conditions for the exponential stability of the generated $C_0$-semigroup. The results are illustrated by the example of two acoustic waveguides coupled by a membrane interface.

Input-to-state stability meets small-gain theory

Input-to-state stability (ISS) unifies global asymptotic stability with respect to variations of initial conditions with robustness with respect to external disturbances. First, we present Lyapunov characterizations for input-to-state stability as well as ISS superpositions theorems showing relations of ISS to other robust stability properties. Next, we present one of the characteristic applications of the ISS framework - the design of event-based control schemes for the stabilization of nonlinear systems. In the second half of the paper, we focus on small-gain theorems for stability analysis of finite and infinite networks with input-to-state stable components. First, we present a classical small-gain theorem in terms of trajectories for the feedback interconnection of 2 nonlinear systems. Finally, a recent Lyapunov-based small-gain result for a network with infinitely many ISS components is shown.

Stability criteria for positive semigroups on ordered Banach spaces

We consider generators of positive $C_0$-semigroups and, more generally, resolvent positive operators $A$ on ordered Banach spaces and seek for conditions ensuring the negativity of their spectral bound $s(A)$. Our main result characterizes $s(A) < 0$ in terms of so-called \emph{small-gain conditions} that describe the behaviour of $Ax$ for positive vectors $x$. This is new even in case that the underlying space is an $L^p$-space or a space of continuous functions. We also demonstrate that it becomes considerably easier to characterize the property $s(A) < 0$ if the cone of the underlying Banach space has non-empty interior or if the essential spectral bound of $A$ is negative. To treat the latter case, we discuss a counterpart of a Krein-Rutman theorem for resolvent positive operators. When $A$ is the generator of a positive $C_0$-semigroup, our results can be interpreted as stability results for the semigroup, and as such, they complement similar results recently proved for the discrete-time case. In the same vein, we prove a Collatz--Wielandt type formula and a logarithmic formula for the spectral bound of generators of positive semigroups.

Input-to-state stability of infinite-dimensional systems: Foundations and present-day developments

Input-to-state stability (ISS) unifies the stability and robustness in one notion, and serves as a basis for broad areas of nonlinear control theory. In this contribution, we covered the most fundamental facts in the infinite-dimensional ISS theory with a stress on Lyapunov methods. We consider various applications given by different classes of infinite-dimensional systems. Finally, we discuss a Lyapunov-based small-gain theorem for stability analysis of an interconnection of two ISS systems.

Forward completeness implies bounded reachable sets for time-delay systems on the state space of essentially bounded measurable functions

We consider time-delay systems with a finite number of delays in the state space $L^\infty\times\mathbb{R}^n$. In this framework, we show that forward completeness implies the bounded reachability sets property, while this implication was recently shown by J.L. Mancilla-Aguilar and H. Haimovich to fail in the state space of continuous functions. As a consequence, we show that global asymptotic stability is always uniform in the state space $L^\infty\times\mathbb{R}^n$.

Well-posedness and properties of the flow for semilinear evolution equations

We derive conditions for well-posedness of semilinear evolution equations with unbounded input operators. Based on this, we provide sufficient conditions for such properties of the flow map as Lipschitz continuity, bounded-implies-continuation property, boundedness of reachability sets, etc. These properties represent a basic toolbox for stability and robustness analysis of semilinear boundary control systems. We cover systems governed by general $C_0$-semigroups, and analytic semigroups that may have both boundary and distributed disturbances. We illustrate our findings on an example of a Burgers' equation with nonlinear local dynamics and both distributed and boundary disturbances.
