An Eclipsing 47 minute Double White Dwarf Binary at 400 pc

We present the discovery of the eclipsing double white dwarf (WD) binary WDJ 022558.21-692025.38 that has an orbital period of 47.19 min. Following identification with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, we obtained time-series ground based spectroscopy and high-speed multi-band ULTRACAM photometry which indicate a primary DA WD of mass 0.40 +- 0.04 Msol and a 0.28 +- 0.02 Msol mass secondary WD, which is likely of type DA as well. The system becomes the third-closest eclipsing double WD binary discovered with a distance of approximately 400 pc and will be a detectable source for upcoming gravitational wave detectors in the mHz frequency range. Its orbital decay will be measurable photometrically within 10 yrs to a precision of better than 1%. The fate of the binary is to merge in approximately 41 Myr, likely forming a single, more massive WD.

PHL 417: a zirconium-rich pulsating hot subdwarf (V366 Aquarid) discovered in K2 data

The Kepler spacecraft observed the hot subdwarf star PHL 417 during its extended K2 mission, and the high-precision photometric lightcurve reveals the presence of 17 pulsation modes with periods between 38 and 105 minutes. From follow-up ground-based spectroscopy we find that the object has a relatively high temperature of 35 600 K, a surface gravity of $\log g / {\rm cm\,s^{-2}}\,=\,5.75$ and a super-solar helium abundance. Remarkably, it also shows strong zirconium lines corresponding to an apparent +3.9 dex overabundance compared with the Sun. These properties clearly identify this object as the third member of the rare group of pulsating heavy-metal stars, the V366 Aquarii pulsators. These stars are intriguing in that the pulsations are inconsistent with the standard models for pulsations in hot subdwarfs, which predicts that they should display short-period pulsations rather than the observed longer periods. We perform a stability analysis of the pulsation modes based on data from two campaigns with K2. The highest amplitude mode is found to be stable with a period drift, $\dot{P}$, of less than $1.1\cdot10^{-9}$ s/s. This result rules out pulsations driven during the rapid stages of helium flash ignition.

The EXOTIME project: a status report on PG 1325+101 (QQ Vir)

After the discovery of V391 Peg b, the first planet detected around a post Red Giant phase star (Silvotti et al. 2007), the EXOTIME (EXOplanet search with the TIming MEthod) project is focused on the search for new planets with similar characteristics. The aim of the project is to organize a global observing network to collect as much data as possible for a sample of five subdwarf B (sdB) stars and share them in order to obtain a more precise analysis. These evolved pulsators may have extremely regular oscillation periods. This feature makes these stars suitable to search for planetary companions with the timing method as in the case of pulsars. In this contribution we present the project and some preliminary results for the star PG 1325+101 (QQ Vir) after the first two years of activity.

Constraining the degree of the dominant mode in QQ Vir

We present early results of the application of a method which uses multicolor photometry and spectroscopy for \ell discrimination. This method has been successfully applied to the pulsating hot subdwarf Balloon 090100001. Here we apply the method to QQ Vir (PG1325+101). This star was observed spectroscopically and photometrically in 2008. Details on spectroscopy can be found in Telting et al. (2010) while photometry and preliminary results on \ell discrimination are provided here. The main aim of this work was to compare the value of the \ell parameter derived for the main mode in QQ Vir to previously published values derived by using different methods.

RAT0455+1305: another pulsating hybrid sdB star

RAT0455+1305 was discovered during the Rapid Temporal Survey which aims in finding any variability on timescales of a few minutes to several hours. The star was found to be another sdBV star with one high amplitude mode and relatively long period. These features along with estimation of T_eff and log g makes this star very similar to Balloon 090100001. Encouraged by prominent results obtained for the latter star we have decided to perform white light photometry on RAT0455+1305. In 2009 we used the 1.5m telescope located in San Pedro Martir Observatory in Mexico. Fourier analysis confirmed the dominant mode found in the discovery data, uncovered another peak close to the dominant one, and three peaks in the low frequency region. This shows that RAT0455+1305 is another hybrid sdBV star pulsating in both p- and g-modes.

Broyden's Method in Nuclear Structure Calculations

Broyden's method, widely used in quantum chemistry electronic-structure calculations for the numerical solution of nonlinear equations in many variables, is applied in the context of the nuclear many-body problem. Examples include the unitary gas problem, the nuclear density functional theory with Skyrme functionals, and the nuclear coupled-cluster theory. The stability of the method, its ease of use, and its rapid convergence rates make Broyden's method a tool of choice for large-scale nuclear structure calculations.

Total and Differential Cross Sections for the pp-->pp eta-prime Reaction Near Threshold

The eta-prime meson production in the reaction pp-->pp eta-prime has been studied at excess energies of Q = 26.5, 32.5 and 46.6 MeV using the internal beam facility COSY-11 at the cooler synchrotron COSY. The total cross sections as well as one angular distribution for the highest Q-value are presented. The excitation function of the near threshold data can be described by a pure s-wave phase space distribution with the inclusion of the proton-proton final state interaction and Coulomb effects. The obtained angular distribution of the eta-prime mesons is also consistent with pure s-wave production.

Comparison of delta- and Gogny-type pairing interactions

The matrix elements of the zero-range $δ$-force and the finite range Gogny-type pairing force are compared. The strengths of the $δ$-interaction for rare-earth nuclei are adjusted. Pairing gaps resulting from different pairing interactions are compared to experimental ones.

Neutron halos in heavy nuclei -- relativistic mean field approach

Assuming a~simple spherical relativistic mean field model of the nucleus, we estimate the width of the antiproton--neutron annihilation ($Γ_n$) and the width of antiproton--proton ($Γ_p$) annihilation, in an antiprotonic atom system. This allows us to determine the halo factor $f$, which is then discussed in the context of experimental data obtained in measurements recently done on LEAR utility at CERN. Another quantity which characterizes the deviation of the average nuclear densities ratio from the corresponding ratio of the homogeneous densities is introduced too. It was shown that it is also a good indicator of the neutron halo. The results are compared to experimental data as well as to the data of the simple liquid droplet model of the nuclear densities. The single particle structure of the nuclear density tail is discusssed also.
