Perfect powers in sequences of polygonal numbers

Let $P_s(n)$ denote the $n$-th $s$-gonal number. Consider the Diophantine equation $P_{s}(n) = t^{m}$ for integers $n, s, t$ and $m > 2$. All solutions to this equation are known for $m>2$ and $s\in\{3,5,6,8,10,20\}$. Here we extend these results to the cases $s = 2k+4$ (where $k = 4,6$ or $5 \leq k \leq 97$ is a prime number) and $s = k+4$ (where $k = 9,15$ or $3 \leq k \leq 97$ is a prime number). The proofs of our results use the modular and hypergeometric methods, linear forms in logarithms and extensive calculations. We were unable to completely solve the above Diophantine equations, but we expect (based on GRH and the weak effective $abc$ conjecture) that there will be no additional solutions beyond those explicitly shown in Theorems~1, 2 and 3.

On a multiplicative non-Hecke twist of motivic L-functions

We investigate the twisting of motivic $L$-functions by a family of multiplicative characters $ψ$, defined on prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ via $ψ(\mathfrak{p})=α^{N(\mathfrak{p})}$ for a fixed $α\in \mathbb{C}$. One can extend $ψ$ to a continuous non-Hecke character on the idele group of a number field. For $|α|<1$, the resulting $ψ$-twisted $L$-function has interesting analytic properties: an enhanced half-plane of absolute convergence, preservation of the Euler product structure, and meromorphic continuation to the complex plane. We give applications to Dirichlet $L$-functions and $L$-functions associated to modular forms. Furthermore, we show that $ψ$-twisting allows the construction of convergent $p$-adic Dirichlet series and $p$-adic Euler products which have some similarities with their complex counterparts.

On oracle factoring of integers

We present an oracle factorisation algorithm which finds a nontrivial factor of almost all positive integers $n$ based on the knowledge of the number of points on certain elliptic curves in residue rings modulo $n$.

Critical $L$-values of Gross curves

Let $K = \mathbb Q(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is a prime congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Let $A = A(q)$ denote the Gross curve over the Hilbert class field $H$ of $K$. In this note we use Magma to calculate the values $L(E/H, 1)$ for all such $q$'s up to some reasonable ranges for all primes $q$ congruent to $7$ modulo $8$. All these values are non-zero, and using the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we can calculate hypothetical orders of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ for all such $q$ up to $4831$.

On a class of generalized Fermat equations of signature $(2,2n,3)$

We consider the Diophantine equation $7x^{2} + y^{2n} = 4z^{3}$. We determine all solutions to this equation for $n = 2, 3, 4$ and $5$. We formulate a Kraus type criterion for showing that the Diophantine equation $7x^{2} + y^{2p} = 4z^{3}$ has no non-trivial proper integer solutions for specific primes $p > 7$. We computationally verify the criterion for all primes $7 < p < 10^9$, $p \neq 13$. We use the symplectic method and quadratic reciprocity to show that the Diophantine equation $7x^{2} + y^{2p} = 4z^{3}$ has no non-trivial proper solutions for a positive proportion of primes $p$. In the paper \cite{ChDS} we consider the Diophantine equation $x^{2} +7y^{2n} = 4z^{3}$, determining all families of solutions for $n=2$ and $3$, as well as giving a (mostly) conjectural description of the solutions for $n=4$ and primes $n \geq 5$.

Elliptic curves with exceptionally large analytic order of the Tate-Shafarevich groups

We exhibit $88$ examples of rank zero elliptic curves over the rationals with $|\sza(E)| > 63408^2$, which was the largest previously known value for any explicit curve. Our record is an elliptic curve $E$ with $|\sza(E)| = 1029212^2 = 2^4\cdot 79^2 \cdot 3257^2$. We can use deep results by Kolyvagin, Kato, Skinner-Urban and Skinner to prove that, in some cases, these orders are the true orders of $\sza$. For instance, $410536^2$ is the true order of $\sza(E)$ for $E= E_4(21,-233)$ from the table in section 2.3.

On a class of Lebesgue-Ljunggren-Nagell type equations

Given odd, coprime integers $a$, $b$ ($a>0$), we consider the Diophantine equation $ax^2+b^{2l}=4y^n$, $x, y\in\Bbb Z$, $l \in \Bbb N$, $n$ odd prime, $\gcd(x,y)=1$. We completely solve the above Diophantine equation for $a\in\{7,11,19,43,67,163\}$, and $b$ a power of an odd prime, under the conditions $2^{n-1}b^l\not\equiv \pm 1(\mod a)$ and $\gcd(n,b)=1$. For other square-free integers $a>3$ and $b$ a power of an odd prime, we prove that the above Diophantine equation has no solutions for all integers $x$, $y$ with ($\gcd(x,y)=1$), $l\in\mathbb{N}$ and all odd primes $n>3$, satisfying $2^{n-1}b^l\not\equiv \pm 1(\mod a)$, $\gcd(n,b)=1$, and $\gcd(n,h(-a))=1$, where $h(-a)$ denotes the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-a})$.

Critical $L$-values for some quadratic twists of Gross curves

Let $K=\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is a prime congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Let $A=A(q)$ denote the Gross curve. Let $E=A^{(-β)}$ denote its quadratic twist, with $β=\sqrt{-q}$. The curve $E$ is defined over the Hilbert class field $H$ of $K$. We use Magma to calculate the values $L(E/H,1)$ for all such $q$'s up to some reasonable ranges (different for $q\equiv 7 \, \text{mod} \, 8$ and $q\equiv 3 \, \text{mod} \, 8$). All these values are non-zero, and using the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we can calculate hypothetical orders of $\sza(E/H)$ in these cases. Our calculations extend those given by J. Choi and J. Coates [{\it Iwasawa theory of quadratic twists of $X_0(49)$}, Acta Mathematica Sinica(English Series) {\bf 34} (2017), 19-28] for the case $q=7$.

Orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the cubic twists of $X_0(27)$

This paper continues the authors previous investigations concerning orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in quadratic twists of a given elliptic curve, and for the family of the Neumann-Setzer type elliptic curves. Here we present the results of our search for the (analytic) orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the cubic twists of $X_0(27)$. Our calculations extend those given by Zagier and Kramarz \cite{ZK} and by Watkins \cite{Wat}. Our main observations concern the asymptotic formula for the frequency of orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups. In the last section we propose a similar asymptotic formula for the class numbers of real quadratic fields.

Behaviour of the order of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the quadratic twists of elliptic curves

We present the results of our search for the orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups for the quadratic twists of elliptic curves. We formulate a general conjecture, giving for a fixed elliptic curve $E$ over $\Bbb Q$ and positive integer $k$, an asymptotic formula for the number of quadratic twists $E_d$, $d$ positive square-free integers less than $X$, with finite group $E_d(\Bbb Q)$ and $|\Sha(E_d(\Bbb Q))| = k^2$. This paper continues the authors previous investigations concerning orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in quadratic twists of the curve $X_0(49)$. In section 8 we exhibit $88$ examples of rank zero elliptic curves with $|\Sha(E)| > 63408^2$, which was the largest previously known value for any explicit curve. Our record is an elliptic curve $E$ with $|\Sha(E)| = 1029212^2$.
