On generalized Ramsey numbers for 3-uniform hypergraphs

The well-known Ramsey number $r(t,u)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every $K_t$-free graph of order $n$ contains an independent set of size $u$. In other words, it contains a subset of $u$ vertices with no $K_2$. Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced a more general problem replacing $K_2$ by $K_s$ for $2\le s<t$. Extending the problem of determining Ramsey numbers they defined the numbers $$ f_{s,t}(n)=\min \big{\{} \max \{|W| : W\subseteq V(G) \text{and} G[W] \text{contains no} K_s\}\big{\}}, $$ where the minimum is taken over all $K_t$-free graphs $G$ of order $n$. In this note, we study an analogous function $f_{s,t}^{(3)}(n)$ for 3-uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we show that there are constants $c_1$ and $c_2$ depending only on $s$ such that $$ c_1(\log n)^{1/4} \left(\frac{\log\log n}{\log\log\log n}\right)^{1/2} < f_{s, s+1}^{(3)}(n) < c_2 \log n. $$

On generalized Ramsey numbers of Erdős and Rogers

Extending the concept of Ramsey numbers, Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced the following function. For given integers $2\le s<t$ let $$ f_{s,t}(n)=\min \{\max \{|W| : W\subseteq V(G) {and} G[W] {contains no} K_s\} \}, $$ where the minimum is taken over all $K_t$-free graphs $G$ of order $n$. In this paper, we show that for every $s\ge 3$ there exist constants $c_1=c_1(s)$ and $c_2=c_2(s)$ such that $f_{s,s+1}(n) \le c_1 (\log n)^{c_2} \sqrt{n}$. This result is best possible up to a polylogarithmic factor. We also show for all $t-2 \geq s \geq 4$, there exists a constant $c_3$ such that $f_{s,t}(n) \le c_3 \sqrt{n}$. In doing so, we partially answer a question of Erdős by showing that $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{f_{s+1,s+2}(n)}{f_{s,s+2}(n)}=\infty$ for any $s\ge 4$.

Approximate counting of regular hypergraphs

In this paper we asymptotically count $d$-regular $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices, provided $k$ is fixed and $d=d(n)=o(n^{1/2})$. In doing so, we extend to hypergraphs a switching technique of McKay and Wormald.

Loose Hamilton Cycles in Regular Hypergraphs

We establish a relation between two uniform models of random $k$-graphs (for constant $k \ge 3$) on $n$ labeled vertices: $H(n,m)$, the random $k$-graph with exactly $m$ edges, and $H(n,d)$, the random $d$-regular $k$-graph. By extending to $k$-graphs the switching technique of McKay and Wormald, we show that, for some range of $d = d(n)$ and a constant $c > 0$, if $m \sim cnd$, then one can couple $H(n,m)$ and $H(n,d)$ so that the latter contains the former with probability tending to one as $n \to \infty$. In view of known results on the existence of a loose Hamilton cycle in $H(n,m)$, we conclude that $H(n,d)$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle when $\log n = o(d)$ (or just $d \ge C log n$, if $k = 3$) and $d = o(n^{1/2})$.

The t-tone chromatic number of random graphs

A proper 2-tone $k$-coloring of a graph is a labeling of the vertices with elements from $\binom{[k]}{2}$ such that adjacent vertices receive disjoint labels and vertices distance 2 apart receive distinct labels. The 2-tone chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $τ_2(G)$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ admits a proper 2-tone $k$ coloring. In this paper, we prove that w.h.p. for $p\ge Cn^{-1/4}\ln^{9/4}n$, $τ_2(G_{n,p})=(2+o(1))χ(G_{n,p})$ where $χ$ represents the ordinary chromatic number. For sparse random graphs with $p=c/n$, $c$ constant, we prove that $τ_2(G_{n,p}) = \lceil{{\sqrt{8Δ+1} +5}/{2}}\rceil$ where $Δ$ represents the maximum degree. For the more general concept of $t$-tone coloring, we achieve similar results.

On Minimum Saturated Matrices

Motivated by the work of Anstee, Griggs, and Sali on forbidden submatrices and the extremal sat-function for graphs, we introduce sat-type problems for matrices. Let F be a family of k-row matrices. A matrix M is called F-admissible if M contains no submatrix G\in F (as a row and column permutation of G). A matrix M without repeated columns is F-saturated if M is F-admissible but the addition of any column not present in M violates this property. In this paper we consider the function sat(n,F) which is the minimum number of columns of an F-saturated matrix with n rows. We establish the estimate sat(n,F)=O(n^{k-1}) for any family F of k-row matrices and also compute the sat-function for a few small forbidden matrices.

Cops and Robbers on Geometric Graphs

Cops and robbers is a turn-based pursuit game played on a graph $G$. One robber is pursued by a set of cops. In each round, these agents move between vertices along the edges of the graph. The cop number $c(G)$ denotes the minimum number of cops required to catch the robber in finite time. We study the cop number of geometric graphs. For points $x_1, ..., x_n \in \R^2$, and $r \in \R^+$, the vertex set of the geometric graph $G(x_1, ..., x_n; r)$ is the graph on these $n$ points, with $x_i, x_j$ adjacent when $ \norm{x_i -x_j} \leq r$. We prove that $c(G) \leq 9$ for any connected geometric graph $G$ in $R^2$ and we give an example of a connected geometric graph with $c(G) = 3$. We improve on our upper bound for random geometric graphs that are sufficiently dense. Let $G(n,r)$ denote the probability space of geometric graphs with $n$ vertices chosen uniformly and independently from $[0,1]^2$. For $G \in G(n,r)$, we show that with high probability (whp), if $r \geq K_1 (\log n/n)^{1/4}$, then $c(G) \leq 2$, and if $r \geq K_2(\log n/n)^{1/5}$, then $c(G) = 1$ where $K_1, K_2 > 0$ are absolute constants. Finally, we provide a lower bound near the connectivity regime of $G(n,r)$: if $r \leq K_3 \log n / \sqrt{n} $ then $c(G) > 1$ whp, where $K_3 > 0$ is an absolute constant.

Tight Hamilton Cycles in Random Uniform Hypergraphs

In this paper we show that $e/n$ is the sharp threshold for the existence of tight Hamilton cycles in random $k$-uniform hypergraphs, for all $k\ge 4$. When $k=3$ we show that $1/n$ is an asymptotic threshold. We also determine thresholds for the existence of other types of Hamilton cycles.

Loose Hamilton Cycles in Random Uniform Hypergraphs

In the random hypergraph $H_{n,p;k}$ each possible $k$-tuple appears independently with probability $p$. A loose Hamilton cycle is a cycle in which every pair of adjacent edges intersects in a single vertex. We prove that if $p n^{k-1}/\log n$ tends to infinity with $n$ then $$\lim_{\substack{n\to \infty 2(k-1) |n}}\Pr(H_{n,p;k}\ contains\ a\ loose\ Hamilton\ cycle)=1.$$ This is asymptotically best possible.

Flips in Graphs

We study a problem motivated by a question related to quantum-error-correcting codes. Combinatorially, it involves the following graph parameter: $$f(G)=\min\set{|A|+|\{x\in V\setminus A : d_A(x)\text{is odd}\}| : A\neq\emptyset},$$ where $V$ is the vertex set of $G$ and $d_A(x)$ is the number of neighbors of $x$ in $A$. We give asymptotically tight estimates of $f$ for the random graph $G_{n,p}$ when $p$ is constant. Also, if $$f(n)=\max\set{f(G): |V(G)|=n}$$ then we show that $f(n)\leq (0.382+o(1))n$.
