Global dynamics of cosmological scalar fields -- Part II

This is the second part of integrability analysis of cosmological models with scalar fields. Here, we study systems with conformal coupling, and show that apart from four cases, where explicit first integrals are known, the generic system is not integrable. We also comment on some chaotic properties of the system, and the issues of integrability restricted to the real domain.

Differential Galois obstructions for non-commutative integrability

We show that if a holomorphic Hamiltonian system is holomorphically integrable in the non-commutative sense in a neighbourhood of a non-equilibrium phase curve which is located at a regular level of the first integrals, then the identity component of the differential Galois group of the variational equations along the phase curve is Abelian. Thus necessary conditions for the commutative and non-commutative integrability given by the differential Galois approach are the same.

Necessary conditions for partial and super-integrability of Hamiltonian systems with homogeneous potentia

We consider a natural Hamiltonian system of $n$ degrees of freedom with a homogeneous potential. Such system is called partially integrable if it admits $1<l<n$ independent and commuting first integrals, and it is called super-integrable if it admits $n+l$, $0<l<n$ independent first integrals such that $n$ of them commute. We formulate two theorems which give easily computable and effective necessary conditions for partial and super-integrability. These conditions are derived in the frame of the Morales-Ramis theory, i.e., from an analysis of the differential Galois group of variational equations along a particular solution of the system. To illustrate an application of the formulated theorems, we investigete three and four body problems on a line and the motion in a radial potential.

Global dynamics of cosmological scalar fields -- Part I

We investigate the Liouvillian integrability of Hamiltonian systems describing a universe filled with a scalar field (possibly complex). The tool used is the differential Galois group approach, as introduced by Morales-Ruiz and Ramis. The main result is that the generic systems are non-integrable, although there still exist some values of parameters for which integrability remains undecided. We also draw a connection with chaos present in such cosmological models. The first part of the article deals with minimally coupled fields, and the second treats the conformal couping.

On the extrasolar multi-planet system around HD160691

We re-analyze the precision radial velocity (RV) observations of HD160691 (mu Ara) by the Anglo-Australian Planet Search Team. The star is supposed to host two Jovian companions (HD160691b, HD160691c) in long-period orbits about 630 days and about 2500 days, respectively) and a hot-Neptune (HD160691d) in about 9 days orbit. We perform a global search for the best fits in the orbital parameters space with a hybrid code employing the genetic algorithm and simplex method. The stability of Keplerian fits is verified with the N-body model of the RV signal that takes into account the dynamical constraints (so called GAMP method). Our analysis reveals a signature of the fourth, yet unconfirmed, Jupiter-like planet HD160691e in about 307 days orbit. Overall, the global architecture of four-planet configuration recalls the Solar system. All companions of mu Ara move in quasi-circular orbits. The orbits of two inner Jovian planets are close to the 2:1 mean motion resonance. The alternative three-planet system involves two Jovian planets in eccentric orbits (e about 0.3), close to the 4:1 MMR, but it yields a significantly worse fit to the data. We also verify a hypothesis of the 1:1 MMR in the subsystem of two inner Jovian planets in the four-planet model.

Non-integrability of density perturbations in the FRW universe

We investigate the evolution equation of linear density perturbations in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with matter, radiation and the cosmological constant. The concept of solvability by quadratures is defined and used to prove that there are no "closed form" solutions except for the known Chernin, Heath, Meszaros and simple degenerate ones. The analysis is performed applying Kovacic's algorithm. The possibility of the existence of other, more general solutions involving special functions is also investigated.

Orbital solutions to the HD160691 (mu Arae) Doppler signal

We perform a dynamical analysis of the recently updated set of the radial velocity (RV) measurements of the HD160691 (mu Arae). The kinematic, 2-Keplerian model of the measurements leads to the best-fit solution in which the eccentricity of the outer planet is about 0.7 and its semi-major axis is about 4AU. The parameters of the inner planet are well determined. The eccentricity is about 0.3 and the semi-major axis is about 1.65AU. The best 2-Keplerian model leads to a catastrophically unstable configuration, self disrupting in less than 20,000yr. To derive dynamically stable configurations which are simultaneously consistent with the RV data, we use the so called GAMP (Genetic Algorithm with MEGNO Penalty). Using this method, we derive meaningful limits on the parameters of the outer planet which provide a stable behavior of the system. The best-fit solutions are located in a shallow valley of Chi^2, in the (a_c,e_c)-plane, extending over 2AU (for the formal 1sigma confidence interval of the best fit). We find two equally good best-fit solutions leading to the qualitatively different orbital configurations. One of them corresponds to the center of the 5:1 mean motion resonance (MMR) and the second one describes a configuration between the 6:1 and 17:2MMRs. The mu Arae system can be found in the zone confined to other low-order MMRs of the type p:1 with p>5. Our results support the classification of the mu Arae as a hierarchical planetary system, dynamically similar to other known multi-planet systems around HD12661 and HD169830. The results of the GAMP on the extended data set are fully consistent with our previous conclusions concerning a much shorter observational window.

Group analysis of structure equations for stars in radiative and convective equilibrium

It is proposed to use the Lie group theory of symmetries of differential equations to investigate the system of equations describing a static star in a radiative and convective equilibrium. It is shown that the action of an admissible group induces a certain algebraic structure in the set of all solutions, which can be used to find a family of new solutions. We have demonstrated that, in the most general case, the equations admit an infinite parameter group of quasi-homologous transformations. We have found invariants of the symmetries group which correspond to the fundamental relations describing a physical characteristic of the stars such as the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram or the mass-luminosity relation. In this way we can suggest that group invariants have not only purely mathematical sense, but their forms are closely associated with the basic empirical relations.

Darboux Polynomials and First Integrals of Natural Polynomial Hamiltonian Systems

We show that for a natural polynomial Hamiltonian system the existence of a single Darboux polynomial (a partial polynomial first integral) is equivalent to the existence of an additional first integral functionally independent with the Hamiltonian function. Moreover, we show that, in a case when the degree of potential is odd, the system does not admit any proper Darboux polynomial, i.e., the only Darboux polynomials are first integrals.

Differential Galois Approach to the Non-integrability of the Heavy Top Problem

We study integrability of the Euler-Poisson equations describing the motion of a rigid body with one fixed point in a constant gravity field. Using the Morales-Ramis theory and tools of differential algebra we prove that a symmetric heavy top is integrable only in the classical cases of Euler, Lagrange, and Kovalevskaya and is partially integrable only in the Goryachev-Chaplygin case. Our proof is alternative to that given by Ziglin ({\em Funktsional. Anal. i Prilozhen.}, 17(1):8--23, 1983; {\em Funktsional. Anal. i Prilozhen.}, 31(1):3--11, 95, 1997).

Non-integrability of the problem of a rigid satellite in gravitational and magnetic fields

In this paper we analyse the integrability of a dynamical system describing the rotational motion of a rigid satellite under the influence of gravitational and magnetic fields. In our investigations we apply an extension of the Ziglin theory developed by Morales-Ruiz and Ramis. We prove that for a symmetric satellite the system does not admit an additional real meromorphic first integral except for one case when the value of the induced magnetic moment along the symmetry axis is related to the principal moments of inertia in a special way.

Non-integrability of the generalised spring-pendulum problem

We investigate a generalisation of the three dimensional spring-pendulum system. The problem depends on two real parameters $(k,a)$, where $k$ is the Young modulus of the spring and $a$ describes the nonlinearity of elastic forces. We show that this system is not integrable when $k\neq -a$. We carefully investigated the case $k= -a$ when the necessary condition for integrability given by the Morales-Ramis theory is satisfied. We discuss an application of the higher order variational equations for proving the non-integrability in this case.

The Janus head of the HD 12661 planetary system

In this work we perform a global analysis of the radial velocity curve of the HD 12661 system. Orbital fits that are obtained by the genetic and gradient algorithms of minimization reveal the proximity of the system to the 6:1 mean motion resonance. The orbits are locked in the secular resonance with apsidal axes librating about 180 deg with the full amplitude $\simeq (90,180) deg$. Our solution incorporates the mutual interaction between the companions. The stability analysis with the MEGNO fast indicator shows that the system is located in an extended stable zone of quasi-periodic motions. These results are different from those obtained on the basis of the orbital fit published by Fischer et al. (2003)

Improved timing formula for the PSR B1257+12 planetary system

We present a new analysis of the dynamics of the planetary system around the pulsar B1257+12. A semi-analytical theory of perturbation between terrestrial-mass planets B and C is developed and applied to improve multi-orbit timing formula for this object. We use numerical simulations of the pulse arrival times for PSR B1257+12 to demonstrate that our new timing model can serve as a toll to determine the masses of the two planets.

Frequency decomposition of astrometric signature of planetary systems

We present theoretical analysis of the astrometric searches for extrasolar planets with the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). Particularly, we derive a model for the future measurements with SIM and discuss the problem of reliable estimation of orbital elements of planets. For this purpose we propose a new method of data analysis and present a numerical test of its application on simulated SIM astrometric measurements of $\upsilon$ Andromedae planetary system. We demonstrate that our approach allows successfull determination of its orbital elements.

Frequency Analysis of Reflex Velocities of Stars with Planets

Since it has become possible to discovery planets orbiting nearby solar-type stars through very precise Doppler-shift measurements, the role of methods used to analyze such observations has grown significantly. The widely employed model-dependent approach based on the least-squares fit of the Keplerian motion to the radial-velocity variations can be, as we show, unsatisfactory. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new method that may be easily and successfully applied to the Doppler-shift measurements. This method allows us to analyze the data without assuming any specific model and yet to extract all significant features of the observations. This very simple idea, based on the subsequent subtraction of all harmonic components from the data, can be easily implemented. We show that our method can be used to analyze real 16 Cygni B Doppler-shift observations with a surprising but correct result which is substantially different from that based on the least-squares fit of a Keplerian orbit. Namely, using frequency analysis we show that with the current accuracy of this star's observations it is not possible to determine the value of the orbital eccentricity which is claimed to be as high as 0.6.

Resonance in PSR B1257+12 Planetary System

In this paper we present a new method that can be used for analysis of time of arrival of a pulsar pulses (TOAs). It is designated especially to detect quasi-periodic variations of TOAs. We apply our method to timing observations of PSR B1257+12 and demonstrate that using it it is possible to detect not only first harmonics of a periodic variations, but also the presence of a resonance effect. The resonance effect detected, independently of its physical origin, can appear only when there is a non-linear interaction between two periodic modes. The explanation of TOAs variations as an effect of the existence of planets is, till now, the only known and well justified. In this context, the existence of the resonance frequency in TOAs is the most significant signature of the gravitational interaction of planets.

On the Integrability of Bianchi Cosmological Models

In this work, we are investigating the problem of integrability of Bianchi class A cosmological models. This class of systems is reduced to the form of Hamiltonian systems with exponential potential forms. The dynamics of Bianchi class A models is investigated through the Euler-Lagrange equations and geodesic equations in the Jacobi metric. On this basis, we have come to some general conclusions concerning the evolution of the volume function of 3-space of constant time. The formal and general form of this function has been found. It can serve as a controller during numerical calculations of the dynamics of cosmological models. The integrability of cosmological models is also discussed from the points of view of different integrability criterions. We show that dimension of phase space of Bianchi class A Hamiltonian systems can be reduced by two. We prove vector field of the reduced system is polynomial and it does not admit any analytic, or even formal first integral.
