Non-degeneracy of the discriminant

Let $(l,f):(C^2,0)\rightarrow (C^2,0)$ be the germ of a holomorphic mapping such that $l=0$ is a smooth curve which is not a branch of the singular curve $f=0$. The direct image of the critical locus of this mapping is called the discriminant curve. In this paper we study the pairs $(l,f)$ for which the discriminant curve is non-degenerate in the Kouchnirenko sense.

On the Łojasiewicz exponent, special direction and maximal polar quotient

For a local singular plane curve germ $f(X,Y)=0$ we characterize all nonsingular $λ\in\bbC\{X,Y\}$ such that the Łojasiewicz exponent of $\grad\,f$ is not attained on the polar curve $\bJ(λ,f)=0$. When $f$ is not Morse we prove that for the same $λ$'s the maximal polar quotient $q_0(f,λ)$ is strictly less than its generic value $q_0(f)$. Our main tool is the Eggers tree of singularity constructed as a decorated graph of relations between balls in the space of branches defined by using a logarithmic distance.

On the Lojasiewicz exponent of the gradient of a polynomial function

Let h = \sum h_{αβ} X^αY^βbe a polynomial with complex coefficients. The Lojasiewicz exponent of the gradient of h at infinity is the upper bound of the set of all real λsuch that |grad h(x, y)| >= c|(x,y)|^λin a neighbourhood of infinity in C^2, for c > 0. We estimate this quantity in terms of the Newton diagram of h. The equality is obtained in the nondegenerate case.
