Determinants of Seidel Tournament Matrices

The Seidel matrix of a tournament on $n$ players is an $n\times n$ skew-symmetric matrix with entries in $\{0, 1, -1\}$ that encapsulates the outcomes of the games in the given tournament. It is known that the determinant of an $n\times n$ Seidel matrix is $0$ if $n$ is odd, and is an odd perfect square if $n$ is even. This leads to the study of the set \[ \mathcal{D}(n)= \{ \sqrt{\det S}: \mbox{ $S$ is an $n\times n$ Seidel matrix}\}. \] This paper studies various questions about $\mathcal{D}(n)$. It is shown that $\mathcal{D}(n)$ is a proper subset of $\mathcal{D}(n+2)$ for every positive even integer, and every odd integer in the interval $[1, 1+n^2/2]$ is in $\mathcal{D}(n)$ for $n$ even. The expected value and variance of $\det S$ over the $n\times n$ Seidel matrices chosen uniformly at random is determined, and upper bounds on $\max \mathcal{D}(n)$ are given, and related to the Hadamard conjecture. Finally, it is shown that for infinitely many $n$, $\mathcal{D}(n)$ contains a gap (that is, there are odd integers $k<\ell <m$ such that $k, m \in \mathcal{D}(n)$ but $\ell \notin \mathcal{D}(n)$) and several properties of the characteristic polynomials of Seidel matrices are established.

Parity of Polynomial Multiplier Sequences for the Chebyshev Basis

We demonstrate that if $p\in\mathbb{R}[x]$ and $p$ is not an even function, then $\{p(k)\}^{\infty}_{k=0}$ is not a multiplier sequence for the basis of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. We also give a characterization of geometric multiplier sequences for the Chebyshev basis.

On Zero-Sector Reducing Operators

We prove a Jensen-disc type theorem for polynomials $p\in\mathbb{R}[z]$ having all their zeros in a sector of the complex plane. This result is then used to prove the existence of a collection of linear operators $T\colon\mathbb{R}[z]\to\mathbb{R}[z]$ which map polynomials with their zeros in a closed convex sector $|\arg z| \leq θ<π/2$ to polynomials with zeros in a smaller sector $|\arg z| \leq γ<θ$. We, therefore, provide the first example of a zero-sector reducing operator.

Polynomially Interpolated Legendre Multiplier Sequences

We prove that every multiplier sequence for the Legendre basis which can be interpolated by a polynomial has the form $\{h(k^2+k)\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$, where $h\in\mathbb{R}[x]$. We also prove that a non-trivial collection of polynomials of a certain form interpolate multiplier sequences for the Legendre basis, and we state conjectures on how to extend these results.

Hermite multiplier sequences and their associated operators

We provide an explicit formula for the coefficient polynomials of a Hermite diagonal differential operator. The analysis of the zeros of these coefficient polynomials yields the characterization of generalized Hermite multiplier sequences which arise as Taylor coefficients of real entire functions with finitely many zeros. We extend our result to functions in $\mathcal{L-P}$ with infinitely many zeros, under additional hypotheses.

Non-Real Zero Decreasing Operators Related to Orthogonal Polynomials

Laguerre's theorem regarding the number of non-real zeros of a polynomial and its image under certain linear operators is generalized. This generalization is then used to (1) exhibit a number of previously undiscovered complex zero decreasing sequences for the Chebyshev, Legendre, and generalized Laguerre polynomial bases and (2) simultaneously generate a basis $B$ and a corresponding $B$-CZDS. Some extensions to transcendental entire functions in the Laguerre-Polya class are given which, in turn, give a new and short proof of a previously known result due to one of the authors. The paper concludes with several open questions.

Multiplier Sequences for Generalized Laguerre Bases

In this paper we present a complete characterization of geometric and linear multiplier sequences for generalized Laguerre bases. In addition, we give a partial characterization of the generic multiplier sequence for such bases, and pose some open questions regarding polynomial type multiplier sequences.
