Hirzebruch class and Bialynicki-Birula decomposition

Suppose an algebraic torus acts on a complex algebraic variety $X$. Then a great part of information about global invariants of $X$ are encoded in some data localized around the fixed points. The goal of this note is to present a connection between two approaches to localization for $C^*$-action. The homological results are related to $S^1$-action, while from $R^*_{>0}$-action we obtain a geometric decomposition. We study the resulting decompositions of Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus and their relative versions. We show that via a limit process the second decomposition is obtained from the first one. The results are also valid for singular varieties.

Equivariant Hirzebruch class for singular varieties

The Hirzebruch $td_y(X)$ class of a complex manifold X is a formal combination of Chern characters of the sheaves of differential forms multiplied by the Todd class. The related $χ_y$-genus admits a generalization for singular complex algebraic varieties. The equivariant version of the Hirzebruch class can be developed as well. The general theory applied in the situation when a torus acts on a singular variety allows to apply powerful tools as the Localization Theorem of Atiyah and Segal for equivariant K-theory and Berline-Vergne formula for equivariant cohomology. We obtain a meaningful invariant of a germ of singularity. When it is made explicit it turns out to be just a polynomial in characters of the torus. We discuss a relation of the properties of a singularity germ with its local Hirzebruch class. The issue of positivity of coefficients in a certain expansion remains mysterious. The quotient singularities, toric singularities, the singularities of Schubert varieties are of special interest.

Equivariant Hirzebruch class for quadratic cones via degenerations

We compute the equivariant Hirzebruch class of the quadric cone in C^n degenerating it to an intersection to hyperplanes. The difference of the Hirzebruch classes (measured by the Milnor class) turns out to be the Hirzebruch class of the complement of the quadratic cone of smaller dimension.

Triality in so(4,4), characteristic classes, D4 and G2 singularities

We recall the construction of triality automorphism of so(8) given by E. Cartan and we give a matrix representation for the real form so(4,4). We compute the induced results on the characteristic classes. Paralelly we study the triality automorphism of the singularity D4 (in Arnolds classification of smooth functions) and its miniversal deformation. The similarity with Lie theory leads us to a definition of G2 singularity.

Computing equivariant characteristic classes of singular varieties

The paper is based on a talk. Complete exposition is given in "Equivariant Hirzebruch class for singular varieties". Starting from the classical theory we describe Hirzebruch class and the related Todd genus of a complex singular algebraic varieties. When the variety is equipped with an action of an algebraic torus we localize the Hirzebruch class at the fixed points of the action. We give some examples of computations.

Equivariant Chern classes and localization theorem

For a complex variety with a torus action we propose a new method of computing Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes. The method does not apply resolution of singularities. It is based on Localization Theorem in equivariant cohomology.

Purity of boundaries of open complex varieties

We study the boundary of an open smooth complex algebraic variety $U$. We ask when the cohomology of the geometric boundary $Z=X\setminus U$ in a smooth compactification $X$ is pure with respect to the mixed Hodge structure. Knowing the dimension of singularity locus of some singular compactification we give a bound for $k$ above which the cohomology $H^k(Z)$ is pure. The main ingredient of the proof is purity of the intersection cohomology sheaf.

Positivity of Legendrian Thom polynomials

We study Legendrian singularities arising in complex contact geometry. We define a one-parameter family of bases in the ring of Legendrian characteristic classes such that any Legendrian Thom polynomial has nonnegative coefficients when expanded in these bases. The method uses a suitable Lagrange Grassmann bundle on the product of projective spaces. This is an extension of a nonnegativity result for Lagrangian Thom polynomials obtained by the authors previously. For a fixed pecialization, other specializations of the parameter lead to upper bounds for the coefficients of the given basis. One gets also upper bounds of the coefficients from the positivity of classical Thom polynomials (for mappings), obtained previously by the last two authors.

Purity at the end

We consider smooth completion of algebraic manifolds. Having some information about its singular completions or about completions of its images we prove purity of cohohomology of the set at infinity. We deduce also some topological properties. The work is based on the study of perverse direct images for algebraic maps.

Thom polynomials of invariant cones, Schur functions, and positivity

We generalize the notion of Thom polynomials from singularities of maps between two complex manifolds to invariant cones in representations, and collections of vector bundles. We prove that the generalized Thom polynomials, expanded in the products of Schur functions of the bundles, have nonnegative coefficients. For classical Thom polynomials associated with maps of complex manifolds, this gives an extension of our former result for stable singularities to nonnecessary stable ones. We also discuss some related aspects of Thom polynomials, which makes the article expository to some extent.

Positivity of Schur function expansions of Thom polynomials

Combining the Kazarian approach to Thom polynomials via classifying spaces of singularities with the Fulton-Lazarsfeld theory of numerical positivity for ample vector bundles, we show that the coefficients of various Schur function expansions of the Thom polynomials of stable and unstable singularities are nonnegative.

Correspondences and index

We define certain class of correspondences of polarized representations of $C^*$-algebras. Our correspondences are modeled on the spaces of boundary values of elliptic operators on bordisms joining two manifolds. In this setup we define the index. The main subject of the paper is the additivity of the index.

On torsion in homology of singular toric varieties

Let $X$ be a toric variety. Rationally Borel-Moore homology of $X$ is isomorphic to the homology of the Koszul complex $A^T_*(X)\otimes Λ^\x M$, where $A^T_*(X)$ is the equivariant Chow group and $M$ is the character group of $T$. Moreover, the same holds for coefficients which are the integers with certain primes inverted.

Residue forms on singular hypersurfaces

The purpose of this paper is to point out a relation between the canonical sheaf and the intersection complex of a singular algebraic variety. We focus on the hypersurface case. Let $M$ be a complex manifold, $X\subset M$ a singular hypersurface. We study residues of top-dimensional meromorphic forms with poles along $X$. Applying resolution of singularities sometimes we are able to construct residue classes either in $L^2$-cohomology of $X$ or in the intersection cohomology. The conditions allowing to construct these classes coincide. They can be formulated in terms of the weight filtration. Finally, provided that these conditions hold, we construct in a canonical way a lift of the residue class to cohomology of $X$.

Weights in cohomology and the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence

We show that in the category of complex algebraic varieties, the Eilenberg--Moore spectral sequence can be endowed with a weight filtration. This implies that it degenerates if all involved spaces have pure cohomology. As application, we compute the rational cohomology of an algebraic $G$-variety $X$ ($G$ being a connected algebraic group) in terms of its equivariant cohomology provided that $H_G(X)$ is pure. This is the case, for example, if $X$ is smooth and has only finitely many orbits. We work in the category of mixed sheaves; therefore our results apply equally to (equivariant) intersection homology.

Weights in the cohomology of toric varieties

We describe the weight filtration in the cohomology of toric varieties. We present a role of the Frobenius automorphism in an elementary way. We prove that equivariant intersection homology of an arbitrary toric variety is pure. We obtain results concerning Koszul duality: nonequivariant intersection cohomology is equal to the cohomology of the Koszul complex $IH_T^*(X)\otimes H^*(T)$. We also describe the weight filtration in $IH^*(X)$.
