A computer-assisted proof of robust transitivity

We present computer-assisted proofs of partial hyperbolicity, existence of a blender and robust transitivity for diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. These proofs are implemented for a family of derived-from-Anosov systems on the 3-torus.

An algorithm to detect and rigorously verify blenders

We present a characterisation of blenders based on mapping properties of certain sets of curves that can be rigorously verified by computer-assisted methods. We develop an algorithm to construct these sets of curves that requires only a rough approximation of the strong unstable direction in a prescribed region. Since our approach does not rely on precise data, such as the exact location of invariant manifolds or fixed points, it provides a systematic framework to verify blenders in explicit examples. Here, we apply this framework to rigorously verify that a family of three-dimensional H\'enon-like maps presents blenders.

Horizontality of partially hyperbolic foliations

We show exactly which Seifert manifolds support partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, a circle bundle over a higher-genus surface supports a partially hyperbolic system if and only if it supports an Anosov flow. We also show for these systems that the center-stable and center-unstable foliations can be isotoped so that their leaves are transverse to the circle fibering. As a consequence, every partially hyperbolic system defined on the unit tangent bundle of a higher-genus surface is a collapsed Anosov flow.

Quantitative infinite mixing for non-compact skew products

We consider skew products over subshifts of finite type in which the fibers are copies of the real line, and we study their mixing properties with respect to any infinite invariant measure given by the product of a Gibbs measure on the base and Lebesgue measure on the fibers. Assuming that the system is accessible, we prove a quantitative version of Krickeberg mixing for a class of observables which is dense in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.

Nowhere coexpanding functions

We define a family of $C^1$ functions which we call "nowhere coexpanding functions" that is closed under composition and includes all $C^3$ functions with non-positive Schwarzian derivative. We establish results on the number and nature of the fixed points of these functions, including a generalisation of a classic result of Singer.

Bundle switching in higher dimensions

Assuming it preserves an orientation of its stable bundle, any three-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism can be used to construct a four-dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism which is dynamically incoherent. Under the same assumption, the time-one map of any three-dimensional Anosov flow can be used to construct a four-dimensional diffeomorphism which is both absolutely partially hyperbolic and dynamically incoherent. Further results hold in higher dimensions under additional assumptions.

Dynamically incoherent surface endomorphisms

We explicitly construct a dynamically incoherent partially hyperbolic endomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^2$ in the homotopy class of any linear expanding map with integer eigenvalues. These examples exhibit branching of centre curves along countably many circles, and thus exhibit a form of coherence that has not been observed for invertible systems.

Ergodic components of partially hyperbolic systems

This paper gives a complete classification of the possible ergodic decompositions for certain open families of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. These families include systems with compact center leaves and perturbations of Anosov flows under conditions on the dimensions of the invariant subbundles. The paper further shows that the non-open accessibility classes form a $C^1$ lamination and gives results about the accessibility classes of non-volume-preserving systems. Classification of partially hyperbolic surface endomorphisms

We show that in the absence of periodic centre annuli, a partially hyperbolic surface endomorphism is dynamically coherent and leaf conjugate to its linearisation. We proceed to characterise the dynamics in the presence of periodic centre annuli. This completes a classification of partially hyperbolic surface endomorphisms.

Anomalous partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms III: abundance and incoherence

Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably ergodic, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms whose mapping classes form a subgroup of the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}(T^1S)$ which is isomorphic to $\mathcal{M}(S)$. At the same time we show that the totality of mapping classes which can be realized by partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms does not form a subgroup of $\mathcal{M}(T^1S)$. Finally, some of the examples on $T^1S$ are absolutely partially hyperbolic, stably ergodic and robustly non-dynamically coherent, disproving a conjecture by F. Rodriguez Hertz, J. Rodriguez Hertz and R. Ures.

Global manifold structure of a continuous-time heterodimensional cycle

A heterodimensional cycle consists of a pair of heteroclinic connections between two saddle periodic orbits with unstable manifolds of different dimensions. Recent theoretical work on chaotic dynamics beyond the uniformly hyperbolic setting has shown that heterodimensional cycles may occur robustly in diffeomorphisms of dimension at least three. We study a concrete example of a heterodimensional cycle in the continuous-time setting, specifically in a four-dimensional vector field model of intracellular calcium dynamics. By employing advanced numerical techniques, Zhang, Krauskopf and Kirk [Discr. Contin. Dynam. Syst. A 32(8) 2825--2851 (2012)] found that a heterodimensional cycle exists in this model. We investigate the geometric structure of the associated stable and unstable manifolds in the neighbourhood of this heterodimensional cycle, consisting of a single connecting orbit of codimension one and an entire cylinder of structurally stable connecting orbits between two saddle periodic orbits. We employ a boundary-value problem set-up to compute their stable and unstable manifolds, which we visualize in different projections of phase space and as intersection sets with a suitable three-dimensional Poincaré section. We show that, locally near the intersection set of the heterodimensional cycle, the manifolds interact as described by the theory for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms. On the other hand, their global structure is more intricate, which is due to the fact that it is not possible to find a Poincaré section that is transverse to the flow everywhere. Our results show that the abstract concept of a heterodimensional cycle arises and can be studied in continuous-time models from applications.

Partially hyperbolic surface endomorphisms

We prove that a class of weakly partially hyperbolic endomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^2$ are dynamically coherent and leaf conjugate to linear toral endomorphisms. Moreover, we give an example of a partially hyperbolic endomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^2$ which does not admit a centre foliation.

Seifert manifolds admitting partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

We characterize which 3-dimensional Seifert manifolds admit transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. In particular, a circle bundle over a higher-genus surface admits a transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism if and only if it admits an Anosov flow.
