Semileptonic B and Lambda_b Decays and Local Duality in QCD

The inclusive and exclusive semileptonic decay distributions for b -> c decay are computed in the Shifman-Voloshin limit. The inclusive decay distributions (computed using an operator product expansion) depend on quark masses, and the exclusive decay distributions depend on hadron masses. Nevertheless, we show explicitly how the first two terms in the 1/m expansion match between the inclusive and exclusive decays. Agreement between the inclusive and exclusive decay rates requires a minimum smearing region of size Lambda_QCD before local duality holds in QCD. The alpha_s corrections to the inclusive and exclusive decay rates are also shown to agree to order (log m)/m^2. The alpha_s/m^2 corrections are used to obtain the alpha_s correction to Bjorken's inequality on the slope of the Isgur-Wise function.

Effective Field Theories

These lectures introduce some of the basic notions of effective field theories, as used in particle physics. The topics discussed are the $ΔS=1$ and $ΔS =2$ weak interactions, and chiral perturbation theory as applied to mesons, baryons, and hadrons containing heavy quarks.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for Vector Mesons

The interactions of $ρ$, $K^*$, $ϕ$ and $ω$ vector-mesons with low-momentum $π$, $K$ and $η$ pseudoscalar mesons are constrained by chiral symmetry. We derive a heavy vector-meson chiral Lagrangian in which the vector mesons are treated as heavy static matter fields. The unknown couplings of the chiral Lagrangian are further related using the $1/N_c$ expansion. Chiral perturbation theory is applied to the vector-meson mass matrix. At one-loop there are large corrections to the individual vector meson masses, but the singlet-octet mixing angle remains almost unchanged. The parity-violating $s$-wave $\phiC \rightarrow ρπ$ weak decay amplitude is derived in the combined chiral and large $N_c$ limits. Rare $ϕ$ decays provide a sensitive test of non-leptonic neutral current structure.

Flavor Symmetry Breaking in the 1/N Expansion

The breaking of flavor SU(3) symmetry in the axial couplings and magnetic moments of baryons is analyzed in the $1/N_c$ expansion. A simple meson loop graph which is known to be of order $\sqrt{m_s}$ and leading order in $1/N_c$ correctly predicts the pattern of symmetry breaking in the magnetic moments. It is, however, not possible to use this graph to predict the magnitude of the breaking. The situation with the axial couplings is less clear. In this case the breakings are relatively small and do not appear to follow an obvious pattern. Nevertheless there is a clear indication that, with symmetry breaking taken into account, the F/D ratio (defined in the presence of SU(3) breaking) is considerably less than the SU(6) value of 2/3. With sizeable uncertainty, we find F/D \approx 0.44. The quantity 3F-D which is relevant for the analysis of spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering is considerably smaller than the SU(6) value of unity. The new value, 3F-D=0.27+-0.09, is consistent with vanishing strange-quark spin in the nucleon.

Renormalons in Effective Field Theories

We investigate the high-order behavior of perturbative matching conditions in effective field theories. These series are typically badly divergent, and are not Borel summable due to infrared and ultraviolet renormalons which introduce ambiguities in defining the sum of the series. We argue that, when treated consistently, there is no physical significance to these ambiguities. Although nonperturbative matrix elements and matching conditions are in general ambiguous, the ambiguity in any physical observable is always higher order in $1/M$ than the theory has been defined. We discuss the implications for the recently noticed infrared renormalon in the pole mass of a heavy quark. We show that a ratio of form factors in exclusive $Λ_b$ decays (which is related to the pole mass) is free from renormalon ambiguities regardless of the mass used as the expansion parameter of HQET. The renormalon ambiguities also cancel in inclusive heavy hadron decays. Finally, we demonstrate the cancellation of renormalons in a four-Fermi effective theory obtained by integrating out a heavy colored scalar.

Spin-Flavor Structure of Large N Baryons

The spin-flavor structure of large N baryons is described in the 1/N expansion of QCD using quark operators. The complete set of quark operator identities is obtained, and used to derive an operator reduction rule which simplifies the 1/N expansion. The operator reduction rule is applied to the axial currents, masses, magnetic moments and hyperon non-leptonic decay amplitudes in the $SU(3)$ limit, to first order in $SU(3)$ breaking, and without assuming $SU(3)$ symmetry. The connection between the Skyrme and quark representations is discussed. An explicit formula is given for the quark model operators in terms of the Skyrme model operators to all orders in $1/\N$ for the two flavor case.

Semiclassical Meson-Baryon Dynamics from Large-Nc QCD

The large-$N_c$ limit of the meson-baryon effective Lagrangian is shown to reduce to a semiclassical field theory. A chiral bag structure emerges naturally in the $N_c\rightarrow \infty$ limit. A possible connection between the chiral bag picture and the Skyrme model is discussed. The classical meson-baryon theory is used to reproduce the $M_π^3$ non-analytic correction to the baryon mass obtained previously as a loop correction in chiral perturbation theory.

Power Suppressed Corrections to Hadronic Event Shape Variables

For high energy processes ($M\gg Λ_{QCD}$) there are infrared safe hadronic shape variables that have a calculable perturbative expansion in $α_s(M^2)$. However, nonperturbative power suppressed corrections to these variables are not well understood. We use the behavior of large orders of the perturbation expansion to gain insight into the nonperturbative corrections. Our results suggest that certain shape variables have nonperturbative corrections suppressed by fractional powers of $Λ_{QCD}^2/M^2$.

Baryons in the Large N Limit

The properties of baryons can be computed in a systematic expansion in $1/N_c$, where $N_c$ is the number of colors. Recent results on the axial couplings and masses of baryons (for the case of three flavors) are presented. The results give insight into the structure of flavor $SU(3)$ breaking for baryons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Talks presented at the Symposium on Internal Spin Structure of the Nucleon (Yale University, Jan 94) and at the Workshop on Continuous Advances in QCD (Theoretical Physics Institute, University of Minnesota, Feb 94).

Baryon Magnetic Moments in the 1/N Expansion

Relations among the baryon magnetic and transition magnetic moments are derived in the $1/N_c$ expansion. Relations which hold to ALL ORDERS in $SU(3)$ breaking and to leading and first subleading orders in the $1/N_c$ expansion are obtained. Additional relations are found which are valid up to $SU(3)$ breaking at first subleading order in the $1/N_c$ expansion. The experimental accuracy of these relations fits the pattern predicted by the $1/N_c$ expansion. The predictions of the $1/N_c$ expansion are compared in detail with those of the non-relativistic quark model. The $1/N_c$ expansion explains why certain quark model relations work to greater accuracy than others.

QCD Corrections and the Endpoint of the Lepton Spectrum in Semileptonic B Decays

Recently, Neubert has suggested that a certain class of nonperturbative corrections dominates the shape of the electron spectrum in the endpoint region of semileptonic $B$ decay. Perturbative QCD corrections are important in the endpoint region. We study the effects of these corrections on Neubert's proposal. The connection between the endpoint of the electron spectrum in semileptonic $B$ decay and the photon spectrum in $b\rightarrow sγ$ is outlined.

The 1/N Expansion for Baryons

A systematic expansion in 1/N is constructed for baryons in QCD. Predictions of the 1/N expansion at leading and subleading order for baryon axial current coupling constant ratios such as F/D, baryon masses and magnetic moments are derived. The baryon sector of QCD has a light quark spin-flavor symmetry at leading order in 1/N. The formalism of induced representations for contracted Lie algebras is introduced to explain the consequences of this symmetry. Relations are first derived for the simplest case of two light flavors of quarks. The generalization of the large N expansion to N_f = 3 flavors is subtle and is treated using several complementary methods. The 1/N expansion severely restricts the form of SU(3) breaking in the baryon sector. Extrapolation of the large N results to N=3 permits quantitative comparison with experimental data. Deviations of the measured quantities from exact spin-flavor symmetry predictions are accurately described by the subleading 1/N corrections. Implications of the 1/N expansion for baryon chiral perturbation theory are discussed.

Inclusive Semileptonic B and Polarized Lambda_b Decays from QCD

The differential decay spectrum $dΓ/dE_e dq^2$ for the semileptonic decay of an unpolarized hadron containing a b-quark, and the decay spectrum $dΓ/dE_e dq^2 d\!\cosθ$ for polarized $Λ_b$ decay are computed to second order in the $1/m_b$ expansion. Most of the $1/m_b^2$ corrections have a simple physical interpretation, which is discussed in detail. The implications of the results for the determination of $V_{ub}$ are discussed. The decay spectra for semileptonic decay of hadrons containing a c-quark are also given. There is a subtlety in the use of the equations of motion at order $1/m_b^2$ in the heavy quark expansion which is explained.

Baryon-Pion Couplings from Large-N QCD

We derive a set of consistency conditions for the pion-baryon coupling constants in the large-N limit of QCD. The consistency conditions have a unique solution which are precisely the values for the pion-baryon coupling constants in the Skyrme model. We also prove that non-relativistic $SU(2N_f)$ spin-flavor symmetry (where $N_f$ is the number of light flavors) is a symmetry of the baryon-pion couplings in the large-N limit of QCD. The symmetry breaking corrections to the pion-baryon couplings vanish to first order in $1/N$. Consistency conditions for other couplings, such as the magnetic moments are also derived.

1/N Corrections to the Baryon Axial Currents in QCD

We prove that the 1/N corrections to the baryon axial current matrix elements are proportional to their lowest order values. This implies that the first correction to axial current coupling constant ratios vanishes, and that the $SU(2N_f)$ spin-flavor symmetry relations are only violated at second order in 1/N.

QCD Mass Inequalities in the Heavy Quark Limit

QCD inequalities are derived for the masses of mesons and baryons containing a single heavy quark using the heavy quark effective field theory. A rigorous lower bound is obtained for the $\barΛ$ parameters of the heavy quark effective theory that parameterize $1/m$ corrections, $\barΛ$ > 237 MeV for mesons, and $\bar Λ> 657$ MeV for baryons. The inequalities on $\barΛ$ imply the inequalities $m_c < 1627$ MeV and $m_b < 5068$ MeV for the mass parameters of the heavy quark effective field theory.
