Coupled Vlasov and non-Newtonian fluid dynamics: existence and large-time behavior

We study a coupled kinetic-non-Newtonian fluid system on the periodic domain ${\mathbb T}^3$, where particles evolve by a Vlasov equation and interact with an incompressible power-law fluid through a drag force. We prove the global existence of weak solutions for all $p > \frac{8}{5}$, where $p > 1$ denotes the power-law exponent of the fluid's stress-strain relation. Under an additional uniform boundedness assumption on the particle density, we also establish large-time decay of a modulated energy functional measuring deviation from velocity alignment. The decay rate is algebraic when $p > 2$ and exponential when $\frac{6}{5} \le p \le 2$, reflecting the role of fluid dissipation in the large-time dynamics.

Asymptotic stability of steady states for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system in the presence of vacuum

We consider a one-dimensional physical vacuum free boundary problem on the compressible Navier-Stokes-Riesz system for an attractive Riesz potential $|x|^{2s-1}/(2s-1)$ with $0<s<1/2$. It is proved that for the adiabatic constant $γ$ satisfying $2(1-s)<γ<1+2s/3$ under the additional condition that $3/8<s<1/2$, there exists a unique global-in-time strong solution. Specifically, we establish the Lyapunov-type stability of the compactly supported steady states in the Lagrangian coordinates and we also obtain the time rate of convergence for the strong solution to steady states with the same mass in weighted Sobolev spaces where the weights indicate the behavior of solutions near the vacuum free boundary. The difficulties and challenges in the proof are caused not only by the degeneracy due to the vacuum free boundary but also by the non-local feature of the Riesz potential.

Incompressible limits at large Mach number for a reduced compressible MHD system

This paper studies a singular limit problem for a reduced model for compressible non-resistive MHD which was first introduced in \cite{Li-Sun_JDE, Li-Sun} in a two-dimensional setting. This system can also be related to a certain class of two-fluid models. By a suitable rescaling of the magnetic pressure in terms of some parameter $\varepsilon>0$, by letting $\varepsilon\to 0$ we perform the incompressible limit while keeping the Mach number of order $O(1)$. The study is conducted in the framework of global in time finite energy weak solutions and for ill-prepared initial data. We also consider a similar problem in presence of a strong Coriolis term. The key ingredient of the proof, based on a compensated compactness argument, is the use of the transport equation (well-known in the context of two-fluid models) underlying the dynamics. Thanks to it, and differently from previous studies about the incompressible limit, we are able to identify the asymptotics of the terms of order $O(\varepsilon)$ and to characterise their dynamics; such an information is in fact crucial to obtain a closed system in the limit.

Stochastic parabolic equations in Musielak-Orlicz spaces with discontinuous in time N-function

We consider a stochastic parabolic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, multiplicative stochastic noise, and a monotone parabolic operator A. The growth and coercivity of A is controlled by a general N-function M, which depends on time, and spatial variable, but we do not assume any regularity with respect to the former. We show the existence of weak solutions to such system. As auxiliary result, we also provide the proof for the Itô's formula in Orlicz spaces. This general result applies to the ones studied in the literature, such as p(t, x)-Laplacian and double phase problems.

Lipschitz stability for Bayesian inference in porous medium tissue growth models

We consider a macroscopic model for the dynamics of living tissues incorporating pressure-driven dispersal and pressure-modulated proliferation. Given a power-law constitutive relation between the pressure and cell density, the model can be written as a porous medium equation with a growth term. We prove Lipschitz continuity of the mild solutions of the model with respect to the diffusion parameter (the exponent $γ$ in the pressure-density law) in the $L_1$ norm. While of independent analytical interest, our motivation for this result is to provide a vital step towards using Bayesian inverse problem methodology for parameter estimation based on experimental data -- such stability estimates are indispensable for applying sampling algorithms which rely on the gradient of the likelihood function.

Rigorous derivation of magneto-Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation with non-local temperature term

We consider a general compressible, viscous, heat and magnetically conducting fluid described by the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system coupled with induction equation. In particular, we do not assume conservative boundary conditions for the temperature and allow heating or cooling on the surface of the domain. We are interested in the mathematical analysis when the Mach, Froude, and Alfvén numbers are small, converging to zero at a specific rate. We give a rigorous mathematical justification that in the limit, in case of low stratification, one obtains a modified Oberbeck-Boussinesq-MHD system with a non-local term or a non-local boundary condition for the temperature deviation. Choosing a domain confined between parallel plates, one finds also that the flow is horizontal, and the magnetic field is perpendicular to it. The proof is based on the analysis of weak solutions to a primitive system and the relative entropy method.

Stability with respect to domain of the low Mach number limit of compressible heat-conducting viscous fluid

We investigate the asymptotic limit of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with the Mach number proportional to a small parameter $\varepsilon \to 0$, the Froude number proportional to $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ and when the fluid occupies large domain with spatial obstacle of rough surface varying when $\varepsilon \to 0$. The limit velocity field is solenoidal and satisfies the incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. Our studies are based on weak solutions approach and in order to pass to the limit in a convective term we apply the spectral analysis of the associated wave propagator (Neumann Laplacian) governing the motion of acoustic waves.

Two-phase compressible/incompressible Navier--Stokes system with inflow-outflow boundary conditions

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the compressible Navier--Stokes system with singular pressure that explodes when density achieves its congestion level. This is a quantity whose initial value evolves according to the transport equation. We then prove that the "stiff pressure" limit gives rise to the two-phase compressible/incompressible system with congestion constraint describing the free interface. We prescribe of the velocity at the boundary and the value of density at the inflow part of the boundary of a general bounded $C^2$ domain. There are no restrictions on the size of the boundary conditions.

On the influence of gravity in the dynamics of geophysical flows

In the present paper, we study a multiscale limit for the barotropic Navier-Stokes system with Coriolis and gravitational forces, for vanishing values of the Mach, Rossby and Froude numbers ($\rm Ma$, $\rm Ro$ and $\rm Fr$, respectively). The focus here is on the effects of gravity: albeit remaining in a low stratification regime ${\rm Ma}/{\rm Fr}\,\rightarrow\,0$, we consider scaling for the Froude number which go beyond the "critical" value $\rm Fr\,=\,\sqrt{\rm Ma}$. The rigorous derivation of suitable limiting systems for the various choices of the scaling is shown by means of a compensated compactness argument. Exploiting the precise structure of the gravitational force is the key to get the convergence.

A multi-scale problem for viscous heat-conducting fluids in fast rotation

In the present paper, we study the combined incompressible and fast rotation limits for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with Coriolis, centrifugal and gravitational forces, in the regime of small Mach, Froude and Rossby numbers and for general ill-prepared initial data. We consider both the isotropic scaling (where all the numbers have the same order of magnitude) and the multi-scale case (where some effect is predominant with respect to the others). In the case when the Mach number is of higher order than the Rossby number, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by an incompressible Oberbeck-Boussinesq system, where the velocity field is horizontal (according to the Taylor-Proudman theorem), but vertical effects on the temperature equation are not negligible. Instead, when the Mach and Rossby numbers have the same order of magnitude, and in absence of the centrifugal force, we show convergence to a quasi-geostrophic equation for a stream function of the limit velocity field, coupled with a transport-diffusion equation for a new unknown, which links the target density and temperature profiles. The proof of the convergence is based on a compensated compactness argument. The key point is to identify some compactness properties hidden in the system of acoustic-Poincaré waves. Compared to previous results, our method enables first of all to treat the whole range of parameters in the multi-scale problem, and also to consider a low Froude number regime with the somehow critical choice $Fr=\sqrt{Ma}$, where $Ma$ is the Mach number. This allows us to capture some (low) stratification effects in the limit.

Relative Entropy Method for the relaxation limit of Hydrodynamic models

We show how to obtain general nonlinear aggregation-diffusion models, including Keller-Segel type models with nonlinear diffusions, as relaxations from nonlocal compressible Euler-type hydrodynamic systems via the relative entropy method. We discuss the assumptions on the confinement and interaction potentials depending on the relative energy of the free energy functional allowing for this relaxation limit to hold. We deal with weak solutions for the nonlocal compressible Euler-type systems and strong solutions for the limiting aggregation-diffusion equations. Finally, we show the existence of weak solutions to the nonlocal compressible Euler-type systems satisfying the needed properties for completeness sake.

The incompressible limit of compressible finitely extensible nonlinear bead-spring chain models for dilute polymeric fluids

We explore the behaviour of global-in-time weak solutions to a class of bead-spring chain models, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials, for dilute polymeric fluids. In the models under consideration the solvent is assumed to be a compressible, isentropic, viscous, isothermal Newtonian fluid, confined to a bounded open domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the velocity field is assumed to satisfy a complete slip boundary condition. We show that as the Mach number tends to zero the system is driven to its incompressible counterpart.

Low stratification of a heat-conducting fluid in time-dependent domain

We study the low Mach number limit of the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the case of low stratification with ill-prepared initial data for the problem stated on moving domain with prescribed motion of the boundary. Similarly as in the case of a fixed domain we recover as a limit the Oberback-Boussinesq system, however we identify one additional term in the temperature equation of the limit system which is related to the motion of the domain and which is not present in the case of a fixed domain. One of the main ingredients in the proof are the properties of the Helmholtz decomposition on moving domains and the dependence of eigenvalues and eigenspaces of the Neumann Laplace operator on time.

On long-time asymptotics for viscous hydrodynamic models of collective behavior with damping and nonlocal interactions

Hydrodynamic systems arising in swarming modelling include nonlocal forces in the form of attractive-repulsive potentials as well as pressure terms modelling strong local repulsion. We focus on the case where there is a balance between nonlocal attraction and local pressure in presence of confinement in the whole space. Under suitable assumptions on the potentials and the pressure functions, we show the global existence of weak solutions for the hydrodynamic model with viscosity and linear damping. By introducing linear damping in the system, we ensure the existence and uniqueness of stationary solutions with compactly supported density, fixed mass and center of mass. The associated velocity field is zero in the support of the density. Moreover, we show that global weak solutions converge for large times to the set of these stationary solutions in a suitable sense. In particular cases, we can identify the limiting density uniquely as the global minimizer of the free energy with the right mass and center of mass.

Unsteady flows of heat-conducting non-Newtonian fluids in~Musielak-Orlicz spaces

Our purpose is to show the existence of weak solutions for unsteady flow of non-Newtonian incompressible nonhomogeneous, heat-conducting fluids with generalised form of the stress tensor without any restriction on its upper growth. Motivated by fluids of nonstandard rheology we focus on the general form of growth conditions for the stress tensor which makes anisotropic Musielak-Orlicz spaces a suitable function space for the considered problem. We do not assume any smallness condition on initial data in order to obtain long-time existence. Within the proof we use monotonicity methods, integration by parts adapted to nonreflexive spaces and Young measure techniques
