A Mackey embedding for reduced C*-algebras of real reductive groups

The purpose of this paper is construct an embedding of the C*-algebra of the Cartan motion group of a real reductive group G into the reduced C*-algebra of G itself. The embedding has a number of applications: we shall use it to characterize the Mackey bijection from the tempered dual of G into the unitary dual of the motion group; to characterize the continuous field of reduced group C*-algebras arising from the contraction of G to its Cartan motion group; and to characterize the Connes-Kasparov assembly map in operator K-theory. Our results continue and complete a project that was begun several years ago by the last two authors, who considered the case of complex groups. In the real case, detailed information from the theory of R-groups is used in the construction.

Higher Orbital Integrals on Motion Groups and Mackey Deformation

We present an explicit construction of cyclic cocycles on Cartan motion groups, which can be viewed as generalizations of orbital integrals. We show that the higher orbital integral on a real reductive group associated with a semisimple element converges to the corresponding one on the associated Cartan motion group.

Convolution Algebras of Double Groupoids and Strict 2-Groups

Double groupoids are a type of higher groupoid structure that can arise when one has two distinct groupoid products on the same set of arrows. A particularly important example of such structures is the irrational torus and, more generally, strict 2-groups. Groupoid structures give rise to convolution operations on the space of arrows. Therefore, a double groupoid comes equipped with two product operations on the space of functions. In this article we investigate in what sense these two convolution operations are compatible. We use the representation theory of compact Lie groups to get insight into a certain class of 2-groups.
