Hilbert transforms and the equidistribution of zeros of polynomials

We improve the current bounds for an inequality of Erdős and Turán from 1950 related to the discrepancy of angular equidistribution of the zeros of a given polynomial. Building upon a recent work of Soundararajan, we establish a novel connection between this inequality and an extremal problem in Fourier analysis involving the maxima of Hilbert transforms, for which we provide a complete solution. Prior to Soundararajan (2019), refinements of the discrepancy inequality of Erdős and Turán had been obtained by Ganelius (1954) and Mignotte (1992).

Discrete maximal operators over surfaces of higher codimension

Integration over curved manifolds with higher codimension and, separately, discrete variants of continuous operators, have been two important, yet separate themes in harmonic analysis, discrete geometry and analytic number theory research. Here we unite these themes to study discrete analogues of operators involving higher (intermediate) codimensional integration. We consider a maximal operator that averages over triangular configurations and prove several bounds that are close to optimal. A distinct feature of our approach is the use of multilinearity to obtain nontrivial $\ell^1$-estimates by a rather general idea that is likely to be applicable to other problems.

On the Waring-Goldbach problem for seventh and higher powers

We apply recent progress on Vinogradov's mean value theorem to improve bounds for the function $H(k)$ in the Waring-Goldbach problem. We obtain new results for all exponents $k \ge 7$, and in particular establish that for large $k$ one has \[H(k)\le (4k-2)\log k-(2\log 2-1)k-3.\]

On the Waring--Goldbach problem for eighth and higher powers

Recent progress on Vinogradov's mean value theorem has resulted in improved estimates for exponential sums of Weyl type. We apply these new estimates to obtain sharper bounds for the function $H(k)$ in the Waring--Goldbach problem. We obtain new results for all exponents $k\ge 8$, and in particular establish that $H(k)\le (4k-2)\log k+k-7$ when $k$ is large, giving the first improvement on the classical result of Hua from the 1940s.

Sums of four squares of primes

Let $E(N)$ denote the number of positive integers $n \le N$, with $n \equiv 4 \pmod{24}$, which cannot be represented as the sum of four squares of primes. We establish that $E(N)\ll N^{11/32}$, thus improving on an earlier result of Harman and the first author, where the exponent $7/20$ appears in place of $11/32$.
