TDCOSMO XVII. New time delays in 22 lensed quasars from optical monitoring with the ESO-VST 2.6m and MPG 2.2m telescopes

We present new time delays, the main ingredient of time delay cosmography, for 22 lensed quasars resulting from high-cadence r-band monitoring on the 2.6 m ESO VLT Survey Telescope and Max-Planck-Gesellschaft 2.2 m telescope. Each lensed quasar was typically monitored for one to four seasons, often shared between the two telescopes to mitigate the interruptions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample of targets consists of 19 quadruply and 3 doubly imaged quasars, which received a total of 1 918 hours of on-sky time split into 21 581 wide-field frames, each 320 seconds long. In a given field, the 5-{\sigma} depth of the combined exposures typically reaches the 27th magnitude, while that of single visits is 24.5 mag - similar to the expected depth of the upcoming Vera-Rubin LSST. The fluxes of the different lensed images of the targets were reliably de-blended, providing not only light curves with photometric precision down to the photon noise limit, but also high-resolution models of the targets whose features and astrometry were systematically confirmed in Hubble Space Telescope imaging. This was made possible thanks to a new photometric pipeline, lightcurver, and the forward modelling method STARRED. Finally, the time delays between pairs of curves and their uncertainties were estimated, taking into account the degeneracy due to microlensing, and for the first time the full covariance matrices of the delay pairs are provided. Of note, this survey, with 13 square degrees, has applications beyond that of time delays, such as the study of the structure function of the multiple high-redshift quasars present in the footprint at a new high in terms of both depth and frequency. The reduced images will be available through the European Southern Observatory Science Portal.

The DELVE Quadruple Quasar Search I. A Lensed Low Luminosity AGN

A quadruply lensed source, J125856.3-031944, has been discovered using the DELVE survey and WISE W1 - W2 colors. Followup direct imaging carried out with the Magellan Baade 6.5 m telescope is analyzed, as is spectroscopy from the 2.5 m Nordic Optical Telescope. The lensed image configuration is kite-like, with the major axis of the lensing galaxy along the symmetry axis of the kite, and with the faintest image at its tail. Redward of 6000 AA the tail image is strongly blended with the lensing galaxy. The Sloan g direct imaging carried out with Magellan permits deblending. As the lensed image configuration is nearly circular, simple models give high predicted magnifications for all four images. The source's narrow emission lines at redshift z=2.225 and low intrinsic luminosity qualify it as a Type 2 AGN. The Magellan image shows a substantial residual that suggests a second lensing galaxy.

Nine lensed quasars and quasar pairs discovered through spatially-extended variability in Pan-STARRS

We present the proof-of-concept of a method to find strongly lensed quasars using their spatially-extended photometric variability through difference imaging in cadenced imaging survey data. We apply the method to Pan-STARRS, starting with an initial selection of 14 107 Gaia multiplets with quasar-like infrared colours from WISE. We identify 229 candidates showing notable spatially-extended variability during the Pan-STARRS survey period. These include 20 known lenses, alongside an additional 12 promising candidates for which we obtain long-slit spectroscopy follow-up. This process results in the confirmation of four doubly lensed quasars, four unclassified quasar pairs and one projected quasar pair. Only three are pairs of stars or quasar+star projections, the false positive rate is thereby 25%. The lenses have separations between 0.81" and 1.24" and source redshifts between z = 1.47 and z = 2.46. Three of the unclassified quasar pairs are promising dual quasars candidates with separations ranging from 6.6 to 9.3 kpc. We expect that this technique will be a particularly efficient way to select lensed variables in the upcoming Rubin-LSST, which will be crucial given the expected limitations for spectroscopic follow-up

New HARPS and FEROS observations of GJ1046

In this paper we present new precise Doppler data of GJ1046 taken between November 2005 and July 2018 with the HARPS and the FEROS high-resolution spectographs. In addition, we provide a new stellar mass estimate of GJ1046 and we update the orbital parameters of the GJ1046 system. These new data and analysis could be used together with the GAIA epoch astrometry, when available, for braking the $\sin i$ degeneracy and revealing the true mass of the GJ1046 system.

Evolutionary paths among different red galaxy types at 0.3 < z < 1.5 and the late buildup of massive E-S0's through major mergers

Some recent observations seem to disagree with hierarchical theories of galaxy formation about the role played by major mergers in the late buildup of massive E-S0's. We re-address this question by analysing the morphology, structural distortion level, and star formation enhancement of a sample of massive galaxies (M_* > 5 * 10^10 Msun) lying on the Red Sequence and its surroundings at 0.3 < z < 1.5. We have used an initial sample of ~1800 sources with K_s < 20.5 mag over an area ~155 arcmin^2 on the Groth Strip, combining data from the Rainbow Extragalactic Database and the GOYA Survey. Red galaxy classes that can be directly associated to intermediate stages of major mergers and to their final products have been defined. We report observational evidence of the existence of a dominant evolutionary path among massive red galaxies at 0.6 10^11 Msun at z=0 through gas-rich major mergers has frozen since z~0.6. All these facts support that major mergers have played the dominant role in the definitive buildup of present-day E-S0's with M_*> 10^11 Msun at 0.6<z<1.2, in good agreement with hierarchical scenarios of galaxy formation.

Velocity Dispersions and Stellar Populations of the Most Compact and Massive Early-Type Galaxies at Redshift ~1

We present Gran-Telescopio-Canarias/OSIRIS optical spectra of 4 of the most compact and massive early-type galaxies in the Groth Strip Survey at redshift z~1, with effective radii Reff=0.5-2.4 kpc and photometric stellar masses Mstar=1.2-4x10^11 Msun. We find these galaxies have velocity dispersions sigma=156-236 km/s. The spectra are well fitted by single stellar population models with approximately 1 Gyr of age and solar metallicity. We find that: i) the dynamical masses of these galaxies are systematically smaller by a factor of ~6 than the published stellar masses using BRIJK photometry; ii) when estimating stellar masses as 0.7xMdyn, a combination of passive luminosity fading with mass/size growth due to minor mergers can plausibly evolve our objects to match the properties of the local population of early-type galaxies.

The morphologies and masses of extremely red galaxies in the Groth Strip survey

We present a new cataloge of EROs from the Groth strip and study the relation between their morphology and mass. We find 102 EROs (F814W-K=>4, K<=21.0), over a survey area of 155 arcmin^2. The photometric data include U,B,F606W,F814W,J,K bands. Morphologies are based on a by eye classification and we distinguish between 3 basic classes: compact objects, targets with a disc and/or a bulge component and irregular or merger candidates. The majority of our targets has either a very compact morphology (33+-6%), or show more or less distinct disc components (41+-6%). 14+-4% are merger or irregulars and 7 objects could not be classified. We also study the dependence of structural parameters on morphological appearance. EROs that are either compact or show a distinct bulge component have smaller median effective radii (1.22+-0.14 kpc and 3.31+-0.53 kpc) than disc dominated (5.50+-0.51 kpc) or possible irregular galaxies or merger candidates (4.92+-0.14 kpc). The Sersic index changes from 2.30+-0.34 and 3.24+-0.55, to 1.03+-0.24 and 1.54+-0.40 respectively. Most the EROs in our sample have redshifts between z=1 and z=2; however, compact EROs in our sample are found at redshifts as low as z=0.4 and as high as z=2.8; the latter qualify as well as DRGs. Disc-like EROs are also found up to z=2.8; however those with a bulge-disc structure are only seen at z<1.5. For each of these EROs we determined the stellar mass and mean population age by fitting synthetic Bruzual (2007) spectra to the SED. Mass estimates were obtained by assuming an exponentially declining star formation rate. Total stellar masses are in the range 9.1 11.0 dominantly show compact morphologies, but also include a significant number of sources with a disc morphology.
