"Evaluations" of Observables Versus Measurements in Quantum Theory

In Quantum Physics there are circumstances where the direct measurement of particular observables encounters diffculties; in some of these cases, however, its value can be evaluated, i.e. it can be inferred by measuring another observable characterized by perfect correlation with the observable of interest. Though an evaluation is often interpreted as a measurement of the evaluated observable, we prove that the two concepts cannot be identified in Quantum Physics, because the identifcation yields contradictions. Then, we establish the conceptual status of evaluations in Quantum Theory and the role can be ascribed to them.

Measurements of Observables Replaced by "Detections" in Quantum Theory

In Quantum Physics it is not always possible to directly perform the measurement of an obsevable; in some of these cases, however, its value can be {\sl detected}, i.e. it can be inferred by measuring {\sl another} observable characterized by perfect correlation with the observable of interest. Though a {\sl detection} is often interpreted as a {\sl measurement} of the detected observable, we prove that the two concepts cannot be identified in Quantum Physics. Furthermore, we establish what meaning and role can be ascribed to detections coherently with Quantum Theory.

Simultaneous elements of reality for incompatible properties by exploiting locality

We show that the extensions of quantum correlations stemming from a "strict" interpretation of the criterion of reality of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen raise the inadequacy of their ideal experiment for the assignment of simultaneous elements of reality to two incompatible properties. Then, we suggest a different physical situation enabling the simultaneous assignment of objective values of two incompatible observables of a spin particle by means of measurements of two compatible properties of a second correlated spin particle.

Detection of incompatible properties

In a typical two-slits experiments we face the question whether it is possible or not to attain knowledge about properties incompatible with Which-Slit property together with the measurement of the final impact point. A wide family of solutions is concretely found and an ideal experiment realizing such a detection is designed, relatively to the detection of three such incompatible properties. In the case of four incompatible properties, general conditions for the existence of solutions are singled out and a particular family of solutions is provided.
