Hard Legendrian unknots

We initiate the study of Reidemeister hardness of Legendrian unknot front projections. Using normal rulings, we obstruct several infinite families of hard unknot diagrams from being drawn with max-tb unknot fronts, along with 1.7 million of the 2.6 million hard unknot diagrams studied in \cite{applebaum2024unknottingnumberhardunknot}. We construct infinitely many smoothly hard max-tb unknot diagrams, and bound their minimum possible writhe. With respect to these bounds, our constructions are conjecturally sharp.

Decompositions of augmentation varieties via weaves and rulings

The braid variety of a positive braid and the augmentation variety of a Legendrian link both admit decompositions coming from weaves and rulings, respectively. We prove that these decompositions agree under an isomorphism between the braid variety and the augmentation variety. We also prove that both decompositions coincide with a Deodhar decomposition and another decomposition coming from the microlocal theory of sheaves. Our proof relies on a detailed comparison between weaves and Morse complex sequences. Among other things, we show that the cluster variables of the maximal cluster torus of the augmentation variety can be computed from the Legendrian via Morse complex sequences.

The contact cut graph and a Weinstein $\mathcal{L}$-invariant

We define and study the contact cut graph which is an analogue of Hatcher and Thurston's cut graph for contact geometry, inspired by contact Heegaard splittings. We show how oriented paths in the contact cut graph correspond to Lefschetz fibrations and multisection with divides diagrams. We also give a correspondence for achiral Lefschetz fibrations. We use these correspondences to define a new invariant of Weinstein domains, the Weinstein $\mathcal{L}$-invariant, that is a symplectic analogue of the Kirby-Thompson's $\mathcal{L}$-invariant of smooth $4$-manifolds. We discuss the relation of Lefschetz stabilization with the Weinstein $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. We present topological and geometric constraints of Weinstein domains with $\mathcal{L}=0$. We also give two families of examples of multisections with divides that have arbitrarily large $\mathcal{L}$-invariant.

Weinstein presentations for high-dimensional antisurgery

In this paper, we give an algorithm for describing the Weinstein presentation of Weinstein subdomains obtained by carving out regular Lagrangians. Our work generalizes previous work in dimension three and requires a novel Legendrian isotopy move (the ``boat move") that changes the local index of Reeb chords in a front projection. As applications, we describe presentations for certain exotic Weinstein subdomains and give explicit descriptions of $P$-loose Legendrians.

Lagrangian Zigzag Cobordisms

We investigate an equivalence relation on Legendrian knots in the standard contact three-space defined by the existence of an interpolating zigzag of Lagrangian cobordisms. We compare this relation, restricted to genus-$0$ surfaces, to smooth concordance and Lagrangian concordance. We then study the metric monoid formed by the set of Lagrangian zigzag concordance classes, which parallels the metric group formed by the set of smooth concordance classes, proving structural results on torsion and satellite operators. Finally, we discuss the relation of Lagrangian zigzag cobordism to non-classical invariants of Legendrian knots.

Lagrangian cobordism of positroid links

Casals-Gorsky-Gorsky-Simental realized all positroid strata of the complex Grassmannian as augmentation varieties of Legendrians called positroid links. We prove that the partial order on strata induced by Zariski closure also has a symplectic interpretation, given by exact Lagrangian cobordism.

Obstructing Lagrangian concordance for closures of 3-braids

We show that any knot which is smoothly the closure of a 3-braid cannot be Lagrangian concordant to and from the maximum Thurston-Bennequin Legendrian unknot except the unknot itself. Our obstruction comes from drawing the Weinstein handlebody diagrams of particular symplectic fillings of cyclic branched double covers of knots in $S^3$. We use the Legendrian contact homology differential graded algebra of the links in these diagrams to compute the symplectic homology of these fillings to derive a contradiction. As a corollary, we find an infinite family of contact manifolds which are rational homology spheres but do not embed in $\mathbb{R}^4$ as contact type hypersurfaces.

An introduction to Weinstein handlebodies for complements of smoothed toric divisors

In this article, we provide an introduction to an algorithm for constructing Weinstein handlebodies for complements of certain smoothed toric divisors using explicit coordinates and a simple example. This article also serves to welcome newcomers to Weinstein handlebody diagrams and Weinstein Kirby calculus. Finally, we include one complicated example at the end of the article to showcase the algorithm and the types of Weinstein Kirby diagrams it produces.

Weinstein handlebodies for complements of smoothed toric divisors

We study the interactions between toric manifolds and Weinstein handlebodies. We define a partially-centered condition on a Delzant polytope, which we prove ensures that the complement of a corresponding partial smoothing of the toric divisor supports an explicit Weinstein structure. Many examples which fail this condition also fail to have Weinstein (or even exact) complement to the partially smoothed divisor. We investigate the combinatorial possibilities of Delzant polytopes that realize such Weinstein domain complements. We also develop an algorithm to construct a Weinstein handlebody diagram in Gompf standard form for the complement of such a partially smoothed toric divisor. The algorithm we develop more generally outputs a Weinstein handlebody diagram for any Weinstein 4-manifold constructed by attaching 2-handles to the disk cotangent bundle of any surface $F$, where the 2-handles are attached along the co-oriented conormal lifts of curves on $F$. We discuss how to use these diagrams to calculate invariants and provide numerous examples applying this procedure. For example, we provide Weinstein handlebody diagrams for the complements of the smooth and nodal cubics in $\mathbb{CP}^2$.

Quasi-self-similar fractals containing "Y" have dimension larger than one

Suppose $X$ is a compact connected metric space and $f: X \to X$ is a metric coarse expanding conformal map in the sense of Ha\"issinsky-Pilgrim. We show that if $X$ contains a homeomorphic copy of the letter "Y", then the Hausdorff dimension of $X$ is greater than one. As an application, we show that for a semi-hyperbolic rational map $f$ its Julia set $\mathcal{J}_f$ is quasi-symmetric equivalent to a space having Hausdorff dimension 1 if and only if $\mathcal{J}_f$ is homeomorphic to a circle or a closed interval.

Generalized iterated wreath products of cyclic groups and rooted trees correspondence

Consider the generalized iterated wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_{r_1}\wr \mathbb{Z}_{r_2}\wr \ldots \wr \mathbb{Z}_{r_k}$ where $r_i \in \mathbb{N}$. We prove that the irreducible representations for this class of groups are indexed by a certain type of rooted trees. This provides a Bratteli diagram for the generalized iterated wreath product, a simple recursion formula for the number of irreducible representations, and a strategy to calculate the dimension of each irreducible representation. We calculate explicitly fast Fourier transforms (FFT) for this class of groups, giving literature's fastest FFT upper bound estimate.

Generalized iterated wreath products of symmetric groups and generalized rooted trees correspondence

Consider the generalized iterated wreath product $S_{r_1}\wr \ldots \wr S_{r_k}$ of symmetric groups. We give a complete description of the traversal for the generalized iterated wreath product. We also prove an existence of a bijection between the equivalence classes of ordinary irreducible representations of the generalized iterated wreath product and orbits of labels on certain rooted trees. We find a recursion for the number of these labels and the degrees of irreducible representations of the generalized iterated wreath product. Finally, we give rough upper bound estimates for fast Fourier transforms.

A metric sphere not a quasisphere but for which every weak tangent is Euclidean

We show that for all $n \geq 2$, there exists a doubling linearly locally contractible metric space $X$ that is topologically a $n$-sphere such that every weak tangent is isometric to $\R^n$ but $X$ is not quasisymmetrically equivalent to the standard $n$-sphere. The same example shows that $2$-Ahlfors regularity in Theorem 1.1 of \cite{BK02} on quasisymmetric uniformization of metric $2$-spheres is optimal.
