Neon and Argon optical emission lines in ionized gaseous nebulae: Implications and applications

In this work we present a study of the strong optical collisional emission lines of Ne and Ar in an heterogeneous sample of ionized gaseous nebulae for which it is possible to derive directly the electron temperature and hence the chemical abundances of neon and argon. We calculate using a grid of photoionization models new ionization correction factors for these two elements and we study the behaviour of Ne/O and Ar/O abundance ratios with metallicity. We find a constant value for Ne/O, while there seems to be some evidence for the existence of negative radial gradients of Ar/O over the disks of some nearby spirals. We study the relation between the intensities of the emission lines of [NeIII] at 3869 Åand [OIII] at 4959 Åand 5007 Å. This relation can be used in empirical calibrations and diagnostic ratios extending their applicability to bluer wavelengths and therefore to samples of objects at higher redshifts. Finally, we propose a new diagnostic using [OII], [NeIII] and Hdelta emission lines to derive metallicities for galaxies at high z.

The nature of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mrk 209 from photoionization models

We present a detailed photoionisation model of the brightest knot of star format ion in the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 209. The model reproduces the intensiti es of main lines emitted by the ionised gas, resulting in a very good agreement between observed and predicted line temperatures and chemical abundances of the observed ionic species. The model has been calculated using the spectral energy distribution of a massive cluster of recent formation as the ionising source. The features of Wolf-Rayet stars observed in the spectrum of the object, along with its ionising properties, lead to different solutions for the ages and characteristics of the ionising stellar populations. The found solutions are compatible with either a composite population of two ionising clusters or a continuous star formation. In the first case, a young cluster, with an age less than 3 Myr, would be responsible for most of the ionisation properties while an older cluster, with either 3.2 or 4.2 Myr, would be responsible for the emission of the observed WR features in the spectrum of the knot. In the second case, the duration of the star formation episode is found to be 3.6 Myr. The addition of a certain amout of dust was required in order to reproduce correctly the measured electron temperatures. This dust implies a gas/dust ratio identical to that in the Milky Way, and a fraction of absorbed photons of f = 0.58. The taking into account the dust grain physics combined with a thick-shell geometry solves the problem of the heating in this object and allows the fitting of the auroral lines, the line temperatures and the ionisation structure of the nebula with a negligible presence of temperature fluctuations, in agreement with the most recent results found for this type of objects from the measurement of the Balmer jump temperature.

Kinematics of gas and stars in the circumnuclear starforming ring of NGC 3351

We have measured gas and stellar velocity dispersions in 5 circumnuclear starforming regions (CNSFRs) and the nucleus of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3351. The stellar dispersions have been obtained from high resolution spectra of the CaT lines at $λλ$ 8494, 8542, 8662 Å, while the gas velocity dispersions have been measured by Gaussian fits to the H$β$ $λ$ 4861 Åline on high dispersion spectra. The CNSFRs, with sizes of about 100 to 150 pc in diameter, are seen to be composed of several individual star clusters with sizes between 1.7 and 4.9 pc on an HST image. Using the stellar velocity dispersions, we have derived dynamical masses for the entire starforming complexes and for the individual star clusters. Values of the stellar velocity dispersions are between 39 and 67 km s$^{-1}$. Dynamical masses for the whole CNSFRs are between 4.9 $\times$ 10$^6$ and 4.3 $\times$ 10$^7$ M$_\odot$ and between 1.8 and 8.7 $\times$ 10$^6$ M$_\odot$ for the individual star clusters. Stellar and gas velocity dispersions are found to differ by about 20 km s$^{-1}$ with the H$β$ lines being narrower than both the stellar lines and the [O{\sc iii}] $λ$ 5007 Ålines. We have found indications for the presence of two different kinematical components in the ionised gas of the regions. The radial velocity curve shows deviation from circular motions for the ionised hydrogen consistent with its infall towards the central regions of the galaxy at a velocity of about 25 km s$^{-1}$. To disentangle the origin of these two components it will be necessary to map these regions with high spectral and spatial resolution and much better S/N in particular for the O$^{2+}$ lines.

The continuous star formation history of a giant HII region in M101

We present results about the star formation process in the giant HII region NGC 5471 in the outskirts of M101. From resolved HST/WPFC2 photometry we find that star formation has been going for the last 70 Myr. We further compare previous results from integrated infrared-optical photometry with the stellar resolved CMD and we discuss the star formation properties of this region and its individual knots, as well as characterizing the different stellar content. This result has very important consequences in our understanding of the burst versus continuous star formation activity in spiral galaxies.

The temperature and ionization structure of the emitting gas in HII galaxies: Implications for the accuracy of abundance determinations

We propose a methodology to perform a self-consistent analysis of the physical properties of the emitting gas of HII galaxies adequate to the data that can be obtained with the XXI century technology. This methodology requires the production and calibration of empirical relations between the different line temperatures that should superseed currently used ones based on very simple, and poorly tested, photo-ionization model sequences. As a first step to reach these goals we have obtained simultaneous blue to far red longslit spectra with the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) of three compact HII galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 2 (DR2) spectral catalog using the INAOE Virtual Observatory superserver. Our spectra cover the range from 3200 to 10500 Å, including the Balmer jump, the [OII]3727,29 Ålines, the [SIII]9069,9532 Ådoublet as well as various weak auroral lines such as [OIII]4363 Åand [SIII]6312 Å. For the three objects we have measured at least four line temperatures: T([OIII]), T([SIII]), T([OII]) and T([SII]) and the Balmer continuum temperature T(Bac). These measurements and a careful and realistic treatment of the observational errors yield total oxygen abundances with accuracies between 5 and 9%. These accuracies are expected to improve as better calibrations based on more precise measurements, both on electron temperatures and densities, are produced. ...

An empirical calibration of sulphur abundance in ionised gaseous nebulae

We have derived an empirical calibration of the abundance of S/H as a function of the S23 parameter, defined using the bright sulphur lines of [SII] and SIII]. Contrary to what is the case for the widely used O$_{23}$ parameter, the calibration remains single valued up to the abundance values observed in the disk HII regions. The calibration is based on a large sample of nebulae for which direct determinations of electron temperatures exist and the sulphur chemical abundances can be directly derived. ICFs, as derived from the [SIV] 10.52 $μ$ emission line (ISO observations), are shown to be well reproduced by Barker's formula for a value of alpha = 2.5. At any rate, only about 30% of the objects in the sample require ICFs larger than 1.2. The use of the proposed calibration opens the possibility of performing abundance analysis with red to IR spectroscopic data using S/H as a metallicity tracer.

The impact on the general properties of HII galaxies in the local universe of the visibility of the [OIII]l 4363 line

We present a statistical study of a very large sample of HII galaxies taken from the literature. We focus on the differences in several properties between galaxies that show the auroral line [OIII]l4363 and those that do not present this feature in their spectra. It turns out that objects without this auroral line are more luminous, more metal-rich and present a lower ionization degree. The underlying population is found to be much more important for objects without the [OIII]l 4363 line, and the effective temperature of the ionizing star clusters of galaxies not showing the auroral line is probably lower. We also study the subsample of HII galaxies whose properties most closely resemble the properties of the intermediate-redshift population of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs). The objects from this subsample are more similar to the objects not showing the [OIII]l 4363 line. It might therefore be expected that the intermediate-redshift population of LCBGs is powered by very massive, yet somewhat aged star clusters. The oxygen abundance of LCBGs would be greater than the average oxygen abundance of local HII galaxies.

A comparative analysis of empirical calibrators for nebular metallicity

We present a new analysis of the main empirical calibrators of oxygen abundance for ionised gas nebulae. With that aim we have compiled an extensive sample of objects with emission line data including the near IR [SIII] lines and the weak auroral lines which allow for the determination of the gas electron temperature. For all the objects the oxygen abundances have been derived in a homogeneus way, using the most recent sets of atomic coefficients and taking into the account the effect of particle density on the temperature of O$^+$. The residuals between directly and empirically-derived abundances as a function of abundance have been studied. A grid of photo-ionisation models, covering the range of physical properties of the gas, has been used to explain the origin of the uncertainties affecting each abundance calibrator. The range of validity for each abundance parameter has been identified and its average uncertainty has been quantified.

Ionising stellar populations in circumnuclear star forming regions

We present a study of the stellar populations and gas physical conditions in Circumnuclear Star Forming Regions (CNSFRs) based on spectrophotometric data, including the 7000 angstroms to 1 micron spectral range, which is of great interest to the whole diagnostic of the ionized gas. The properties of CNSFRs as a class are inferred from a comparison with those of other star forming emission-line objects: low excitation disc HII regions and HII galaxies.

Line temperatures and elemental abundances in HII galaxies

We present long-slit spectrophotometric observations in the red and near infrared of 12 HII galaxies. The spectral range includes the sulphur lines [SII] at wavelengths 6716, 6731 angstroms and [SIII] at 6312 angstroms and 9069, 9532 angstroms. For all of the observed galaxies, at least three ion-weighted temperatures from forbidden auroral to nebular line ratios have been obtained and the relations between the different line temperatures have been discussed. It is found that, for some objects, the [OII] temperatures derived from those of [OIII] through the use of photo-ionisation models, without taking into account the effect of density, can lead to a significant underestimate of the O+/H+ ionic abundance and hence of the total oxygen abundance.

Galactic Evolution along the Hubble Sequence

A generalization of the multiphase chemical evolution model applied to a wide set of theoretical galaxies is shown. This set of models has been computed by using the so-called Universal Rotation Curve from Persic, Salucci & Steel to calculate the radial mass distributions of each theoretical galaxy. By assuming that the molecular cloud and star formation efficiencies depend on the morphological type of each galaxy, we construct a bi-parametric grid of models whose results are valid in principle for any spiral galaxy, of given maximum rotation velocity or total mass, and morphological type.

Three are the main questions that were posed to the audience during this discussion session: a) Can galaxy abundances be believed?, b) What progress can we expect soon and from where? and c) Can we agree, as a community, on topics in which effort should be concentrated in the next five years? In what follows, the different contributions by people in the audience are reflected as they were said trying to convey the lively spirit that enlightened the discussion.

Nebular diagnostics for young stellar populations: Photon escape versus atmosphere blanketing

Emission lines in ionized nebulae can provide strong and useful constraints on the properties of both ionizing and non-ionizing stellar populations in regions with star formation, provided that stellar evolution and stellar atmosphere models can be used in a selfconsistent way. Recently, the application of these techniques has shown important discrepancies between predicted and observed nebular spectra that point to stellar atmosphere models of WR stars which are too energetic and/or to a significant leakageof high energy photons. In this contribution, these two alternatives are analyzed in detail.

A comprehensive study of reported high metallicity giant HII regions. II. Ionising stellar populations

The ionising stellar populations of eleven HII regions in the spiral galaxies: NGC628, NGC925, NGC1232 and NGC1637, all of them reported to have solar or oversolar abundances according to empirical calibrations, have been analysed using stellar population synthesis models. Four of the observed regions in the sample, show features which indicate the presence of a population of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars with ages between 2.3 and 4.1 Myr. This population is sufficient to explain the emission line spectrum of the low metallicity region H13 in NGC628. This is not the case for the rest of the regions for which a second ionising population is required to simultaneously reproduce both the WR features and the emission line spectrum. For two of the regions showing WR features, no consistent solution is found, since the population containing WR stars produces a spectral energy distribution which is too hard to explain the emission of the gas. Several solutions are proposed to solve this problem.

Optical and near IR spectroscopy of low excitation HII regions with GTC

The determination of chemical abundances in ionized gas nebulae is based on the detection of auroral emission lines, from which it is possible to deduce the line temperatures of several ions. These lines are weak in low excitation objects, so its measurement is only possible in great aperture telescopes. The GTC would allow to plan a comprehenssive study of chemical abundances in such objects from mid-high resolution spectra, what would give more accurate observational restrictions to models of chemical evolution.

Chemical Abundances and Ionizing Clusters of HII Regions in the LINER Galaxy NGC 4258

We present long-slit observations in the optical and near infrared of eight HII regions in the spiral galaxy NGC 4258. Six of the observed regions are located in the SE inner spiral arms and the other two are isolated in the northern outer arms. A detailed analysis of the physical conditions of the gas has been performed. For two of the regions, an electron temperature has been derived from the [SIII] 6312 A line. For the rest, an empirical calibration based on the red and near infrared sulphur lines has been used. The oxygen abundances derived by both methods are found to be significantly lower (by a factor of two) than previously derived by using empirical calibrations based on the optical oxygen lines. In the brightest region, 74C, the observation of a prominent feature due to Wolf-Rayet stars provides an excellent constraint over some properties of the ionizing clusters. In the light of the current evolutionary synthesis models, no consistent solution is found to explain at the same time both the WR feature characteristics and the emission line spectrum of this region. In principle, the presence of WR stars could lead to large temperature fluctuations and also to a hardening of the ionizing radiation. None of these effects are found in region 74C for which the electron temperatures found from the [SIII] 6312A and the Paschen discontinuity at 8200A are equal within the errors and the effective temperature of the ionizing radiation is estimated at around 35,300K. Both more observations of confirmed high metallicity regions and a finer metallicity grid for the evolutionary synthesis models are needed in order to understand the ionizing populations of HII regions.

Analysis of Balmer Profiles of early type stars

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of recent star formation regions is dominated by the more massive and early stars (O and B types). These stars show large and very significant absorption features, the most prominent being the recombination lines of H, HeI and HeII. In particular, the shape of their profiles are very dependent on the luminosity of the star. We have explored the potential use of high resolution profiles to discriminate between different luminosity classes and spectral types, by using profiles of the He and Balmer lines. We have calculated growth curves for each of the lines and their dependence on gravity and effective temperature. We show some of these theoretical growth curves and our preliminary conclusions are analyzed and discussed.
