Artificial Intelligence Empowered Multiple Access for Ultra Reliable and Low Latency THz Wireless Networks

Terahertz (THz) wireless networks are expected to catalyze the beyond fifth generation (B5G) era. However, due to the directional nature and the line-of-sight demand of THz links, as well as the ultra-dense deployment of THz networks, a number of challenges that the medium access control (MAC) layer needs to face are created. In more detail, the need of rethinking user association and resource allocation strategies by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) capable of providing "real-time" solutions in complex and frequently changing environments becomes evident. Moreover, to satisfy the ultra-reliability and low-latency demands of several B5G applications, novel mobility management approaches are required. Motivated by this, this article presents a holistic MAC layer approach that enables intelligent user association and resource allocation, as well as flexible and adaptive mobility management, while maximizing systems' reliability through blockage minimization. In more detail, a fast and centralized joint user association, radio resource allocation, and blockage avoidance by means of a novel metaheuristic-machine learning framework is documented, that maximizes the THz networks performance, while minimizing the association latency by approximately three orders of magnitude. To support, within the access point (AP) coverage area, mobility management and blockage avoidance, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for beam-selection is discussed. Finally, to support user mobility between coverage areas of neighbor APs, a proactive hand-over mechanism based on AI-assisted fast channel prediction is~reported.

Outage performance analysis of RIS-assisted UAV wireless systems under disorientation and misalignment

In this paper, we analyze the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wireless system that is affected by mixture-gamma small-scale fading, stochastic disorientation, and misalignment, as well as transceivers hardware imperfections. First, we statistically characterize the end-to-end channel for both cases, i.e., in the absence as well as in the presence of disorientation and misalignment, by extracting closed-form formulas for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF). Building on the aforementioned expressions, we extract novel closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) in the absence and the presence of disorientation and misalignment as well as hardware imperfections. In addition, high signal-to-noise ratio OP approximations are derived, leading to the extraction of the diversity order. Finally, an OP floor due to disorientation and misalignment is presented.

Cascaded Composite Turbulence and Misalignment: Statistical Characterization and Applications to Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Empowered Wireless Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) empowered high-frequency (HF) wireless systems are expected to become the supporting pillar for several reliability and data rate hungry applications. Such systems are, however, sensitive to misalignment and atmospheric phenomena including turbulence. Most of the existing studies on the performance assessment of RIS-empowered wireless systems ignore the impact of the aforementioned phenomena. Motivated by this, the current contribution presents a theoretical framework for analyzing the performance of multi-RIS empowered HF wireless systems. More specifically, we statistically characterize the cascaded composite turbulence and misalignment channels in terms of probability density and cumulative distribution functions. Building upon the derived analytical expressions, we present novel closed-form formulas that quantify the joint impact of turbulence and misalignment on the outage performance for two scenarios of high interest namely cascaded multi-RIS-empowered free space optics (FSO) and terahertz (THz) wireless systems. In addition, we provide an insightful outage probability upper-bound for a third scenario that considers parallel multi-RIS-empowered FSO systems. Our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling both turbulence and misalignment when assessing the performance of such systems.

Toward Autonomous Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Through Wireless Energy Harvesting

In this work, we examine the potential of autonomous operation of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) using wireless energy harvesting from information signals. To this end, we first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and introduce a suitable power-consumption model. Subsequently, we introduce a novel RIS power-splitting architecture that enables simultaneous energy harvesting and beamsteering. Specifically, a subset of the RIS unit cells (UCs) is used for beamsteering while the remaining ones absorb energy. For the subset allocation, we propose policies obtained as solutions to two optimization problems. The first problem aims at maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver without violating the RIS's energy harvesting demands. Additionally, the objective of the second problem is to maximize the RIS harvested power, while ensuring an acceptable SNR at the receiver. We prove that under particular propagation conditions, some of the proposed policies deliver the optimal solution of the two problems. Furthermore, we report numerical results that reveal the efficiency of the policies with respect to the optimal and very high-complexity brute-force design approach. Finally, through a case study of user tracking, we showcase that the RIS power-consumption demands can be secured by harvesting energy from information signals.

Autonomous Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Through Wireless Energy Harvesting

In this paper, we examine the potential for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to be powered by energy harvested from information signals. This feature might be key to reap the benefits of RIS technology's lower power consumption compared to active relays. We first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and then propose an energy harvesting and power consumption model. Furthermore, we formulate and solve the problem of the optimal RIS placement together with the amplitude and phase response adjustment of its elements in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while harvesting sufficient energy for its operation. Finally, numerical results validate the autonomous operation potential and reveal the range of power consumption values that enables it.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Optimal Placement in Millimeter-Wave Networks

This work discusses the optimal reconfigurable intelligent surface placement in highly-directional millimeter wave links. In particular, we present a novel system model that takes into account the relationship between the transmission beam footprint at the RIS plane and the RIS size. Subsequently, based on the model we derive the end-to-end expression of the received signal power and, furthermore, provide approximate closed-form expressions in the case that the RIS size is either much smaller or at least equal to the transmission beam footprint. Moreover, building upon the expressions, we derive the optimal RIS placement that maximizes the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, we substantiate the analytical findings by means of simulations, which reveal important trends regarding the optimal RIS placement according to the system parameters.

Performance Evaluation of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted D-band Wireless Communication

In the recent years, the proliferation of wireless data traffic has led the scientific community to explore the use of higher unallocated frequency bands, such as the millimeter wave and terahertz (0.1-10 THz) bands. However, they are prone to blockages from obstacles laid in the transceiver path. To address this, in this work, the use of a reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS) to restore the link between a transmitter (TX) and a receiver (RX), operating in the D-band (110-170 GHz) is investigated. The system performance is evaluated in terms of pathgain and capacity considering the RIS design parameters, the TX/RX-RIS distance and the elevation angles from the center of the RIS to the transceivers.

Relay-Based Blockage and Antenna Misalignment Mitigation in THz Wireless Communications

The proliferation of wireless devices in recent years has caused a spectrum shortage, which led the scientific community to explore the potential of using terahertz (THz) communications. However, THz systems suffer from severe path attenuation, blockage, and antenna misalignment. In this paper, we present a relay-based blockage and antenna misalignment mitigation approach. In more detail, two relay selection policies are employed, namely best and random relay selection. The system performance under both policies is evaluated and compared in terms of average throughput and the probability that throughput of a link is below the quality of service (QoS) threshold, using Monte Carlo simulations. It was observed that the effect of both blockage and misalignment can be mitigated using relays. Moreover, the gain of using relaying to mitigate blockage is much more significant.

A cooperative localization-aided tracking algorithm for THz wireless systems

In this paper, a novel cooperation-aided localization and tracking approach, suitable for terahertz (THz) wireless systems is presented. It combines an angle of arrival (AoA) tracking algorithm with the two-way time of arrival method, in order to accurately track the user equipment (UE) position and reduce the deafness caused by the estimation errors of the tracking algorithms. This algorithm can be used by one base station (BS) to estimate the UE position, or by multiple BSs, that cooperate with each other to increase the accuracy of the estimations, as well as the probability of successful estimations and guarantee low-estimation overhead. The efficiency of the algorithm is evaluated in terms of deafness and probability of successful AoA estimation and is compared with the corresponding performance of the fast channel tracking algorithm.

Analytical Performance Evaluation of Beamforming Under Transceivers Hardware Imperfections

In this paper, we provide the mathematical framework to evaluate and quantify the performance of wireless systems, which employ beamforming, in the presence of hardware imperfections at both the basestation and the user equipment. In more detail, by taking a macroscopic view of the joint impact of hardware imperfections, we introduce a general model that accounts for transceiver impairments in beamforming transmissions. In order to evaluate their impact, we present novel closed form expressions for the outage probability and upper bounds for the characterization of the system's capacity. Our analysis reveals that the level of imperfection can significantly constraint the ergodic capacity. Therefore, it is important to take them into account when evaluating and designing beamforming systems.

Ergodic capacity evaluation of wireless THz fiber extenders

This paper focuses on delivering quantified results for the evaluation of the aggregated impact of stochastic antenna misalignment, multipath fading and hardware imperfections on the terahertz (THz) wireless fiber extenders. In this line, we present the appropriate signal model that accommodates the different technical and environmental parameters. In particular, it takes into consideration the antenna gains, the central frequency, the transmission range, the environmental conditions, i.e. temperature, humidity and pressure, the spatial jitter between the transmitter and receiver antennas, which results to antenna misalignment, the intensity of hardware imperfections, and the stochastic behavior of the wireless channel. Based on this model, we assess the joint impact of antenna misalignment and multipath fading, by providing Monte Carlo simulation results for the channels ergodic capacity.
