Many-body synchronisation in a classical Hamiltonian system

We study synchronisation between periodically driven, interacting classical spins undergoing a Hamiltonian dynamics. In the thermodynamic limit there is a transition between a regime where all the spins oscillate synchronously for an infinite time with a period twice as the driving period (synchronized regime) and a regime where the oscillations die after a finite transient (chaotic regime). We emphasize the peculiarity of our result, having been synchronisation observed so far only in driven-dissipative systems. We discuss how our findings can be interpreted as a period-doubling time crystal and we show that synchronisation can appear both for an overall regular and an overall chaotic dynamics.

Localization, topology and quantized transport in disordered Floquet systems

We investigate the transition induced by disorder in a periodically-driven one-dimensional model displaying quantized topological transport. We show that, while instantaneous eigenstates are necessarily Anderson localized, the periodic driving plays a fundamental role in delocalizing Floquet states over the whole system, henceforth allowing for a steady state nearly-quantized current. Remarkably, this is linked to a localization/delocalization transition in the Floquet states of a one dimensional driven Anderson insulator, which occurs for periodic driving corresponding to a nontrivial loop in the parameter space. As a consequence, the Floquet spectrum becomes continuous in the delocalized phase, in contrast with a pure-point instantaneous spectrum.

Floquet time crystals in clock models

We construct a class of period-$n$-tupling discrete time crystals based on $\mathbb{Z}_n$ clock variables, for all the integers $n$. We consider two classes of systems where this phenomenology occurs, disordered models with short-range interactions and fully connected models. In the case of short-range models we provide a complete classification of time-crystal phases for generic $n$. For the specific cases of $n=3$ and $n=4$ we study in details the dynamics by means of exact diagonalisation. In both cases, through an extensive analysis of the Floquet spectrum, we are able to fully map the phase diagram. In the case of infinite-range models, the mapping onto an effective bosonic Hamiltonian allows us to investigate the scaling to the thermodynamic limit. After a general discussion of the problem, we focus on $n=3$ and $n=4$, representative examples of the generic behaviour. Remarkably, for $n=4$ we find clear evidence of a new crystal-to-crystal transition between period $n$-tupling and period $n/2$-tupling.

Scrambling and entanglement spreading in long-range spin chains

We study scrambling in connection to multipartite entanglement dynamics in regular and chaotic long-range spin chains, characterized by a well defined semi-classical limit. For regular dynamics, scrambling and entanglement dynamics are found to be very different: up to the Ehrenfest time they rise side by side departing only afterwards. Entanglement saturates and becomes extensively multipartite, while scrambling continues its growth up to the recurrence time. Remarkably, the exponential behaviour of scrambling emerges not only in the chaotic case, but also in the regular one, when the dynamics occurs at a dynamical critical point.

Non-adiabatic breaking of topological pumping

We study Thouless pumping out of the adiabatic limit. Our findings show that despite its topological nature, this phenomenon is not {generically} robust to non-adiabatic effects. Indeed we find that the Floquet diagonal ensemble value of the pumped charge shows a deviation from the topologically quantized limit which is quadratic in the driving frequency {for a sudden switch-on of the driving}. This is reflected also in the charge pumped in a single period, which shows a non-analytic behaviour on top of an overall quadratic decrease. Exponentially small corrections are recovered only with a careful tailoring of the driving protocol. We also discuss thermal effects and the experimental feasibility of observing such a deviation.

From localization to anomalous diffusion in the dynamics of coupled kicked rotors

We study the effect of many-body quantum interference on the dynamics of coupled periodically kicked systems whose classical dynamics is chaotic and shows an unbounded energy increase. We specifically focus on a $N$ coupled kicked rotors model: we find that the interplay of quantumness and interactions dramatically modifies the system dynamics inducing a transition between energy saturation and unbounded energy increase. We discuss this phenomenon both numerically and analytically, through a mapping onto a $N$-dimensional Anderson model. The thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$, in particular, always shows unbounded energy growth. This dynamical delocalization is genuinely quantum and very different from the classical one: using a mean field approximation we see that the system self-organizes so that the energy per site increases in time as a power law with exponent smaller than one. This wealth of phenomena is a genuine effect of quantum interference: the classical system for $N\geq 2$ always behaves ergodically with an energy per site linearly increasing in time. Our results show that quantum mechanics can deeply alter the regularity/ergodicity properties of a many body driven system.

Resilience of hidden order to symmetry-preserving disorder

We study the robustness of non-local string order in two paradigmatic disordered spin-chain models, a spin-1/2 cluster-Ising and a spin-1 XXZ Heisenberg chain. In the clean case, they both display a transition from antiferromagnetic to string order. Applying a disorder which preserves the Hamiltonian symmetries, we find that the transition persists in both models. In the disordered cluster-Ising model we can study the transition analytically -- by applying the strongest coupling renormalization group -- and numerically -- by exploiting integrability to study the antiferromagnetic and string order parameters. We map the model into a quadratic fermion chain, where the transition appears as a change in the number of zero-energy edge modes. We also explore its zero-temperature-singularity behavior and find a transition from a non-singular to a singular region, at a point that is different from the one separating non-local and local ordering.} The disordered Heisenberg chain can be treated only numerically: by means of MPS-based simulations, we are able to locate the existence of a transition between antiferromagnetic and string-ordered phase, through the study of order parameters. Finally we discuss possible connections of our findings with many body localization.

Floquet resonances close to the adiabatic limit and the effect of dissipation

We study the approach to the adiabatic limit in periodically driven systems. Specifically focusing on a spin-1/2 in a magnetic field we find that, when the parameters of the Hamiltonian lead to a quasi-degeneracy in the Floquet spectrum, the evolution is not adiabatic even if the frequency of the field is much smaller than the spectral gap of the Hamiltonian. We argue that this is a general phenomenon of periodically driven systems. Although an explanation based on a perturbation theory in $ω_0$ cannot be given, because of the singularity of the zero frequency limit, we are able to describe this phenomenon by means of a mapping to an extended Hilbert space, in terms of resonances of an effective two-band Wannier-Stark ladder. Remarkably, the phenomenon survives in the presence of dissipation towards an environment and can be therefore easily experimentally observed.

Spin and topological order in a periodically driven spin chain

The periodically driven quantum Ising chain has recently attracted a large attention in the context of Floquet engineering. In addition to the common paramagnet and ferromagnet, this driven model can give rise to new topological phases. In this work we systematically explore its quantum phase diagram, by examining the properties of its Floquet ground state. We specifically focus on driving protocols with time-reversal invariant points, and demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of distinct phases. These phases are separated by second-order quantum phase transitions, accompanied by continuous changes of local and string order parameters, as well as sudden changes of a topological winding number and of the number of protected edge states. When one of these phase transitions is adiabatically crossed, the correlator associated to the order parameter is nonvanishing over a length scale which shows a Kibble-Zurek scaling. In some phases, the Floquet ground state spontaneously breaks the discrete time-translation symmetry of the Hamiltonian. Our findings provide a better understanding of topological phases in periodically driven clean integrable models.

Floquet time crystal in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

In this work we discuss the existence of time-translation symmetry breaking in a kicked infinite-range-interacting clean spin system described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. This Floquet time crystal is robust under perturbations of the kicking protocol, its existence being intimately linked to the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking of the time-independent model. We show that the model being infinite-range and having an extensive amount of symmetry breaking eigenstates is essential for having the time-crystal behaviour. In particular we discuss the properties of the Floquet spectrum, and show the existence of doublets of Floquet states which are respectively even and odd superposition of symmetry broken states and have quasi-energies differing of half the driving frequencies, a key essence of Floquet time crystals. Remarkably, the stability of the time-crystal phase can be directly analysed in the limit of infinite size, discussing the properties of the corresponding classical phase space. Through a detailed analysis of the robustness of the time crystal to various perturbations we are able to map the corresponding phase diagram. We finally discuss the possibility of an experimental implementation by means of trapped ions.

Multipartite entanglement after a quantum quench

We study the multipartite entanglement of a quantum many-body system undergoing a quantum quench. We quantify multipartite entanglement through the quantum Fisher information (QFI) density and we are able to express it after a quench in terms of a generalized response function. For pure state initial conditions and in the thermodynamic limit, we can express the QFI as the fluctuations of an observable computed in the so-called diagonal ensemble. We apply the formalism to the dynamics of a quantum Ising chain after a quench in the transverse field. In this model the asymptotic state is, in almost all cases, more than two-partite entangled. Moreover, starting from the ferromagnetic phase, we find a divergence of multipartite entanglement for small quenches closely connected to a corresponding divergence of the correlation length.

Signatures of many-body localisation in the dynamics of two-sites entanglement

We are able to detect clear signatures of dephasing -- a distinct trait of Many-Body Localisation (MBL) -- via the dynamics of two-sites entanglement, quantified through the concurrence. Using the protocol implemented in [Science {\bf 349}, 842 (2015)] we show that -- in the MBL phase -- the average two-site entanglement decays in time as a power law, while in the Anderson localised phase it tends to a plateau. The exponent of the power law is not universal and shows a clear dependence on the strength of the interaction. This behaviour is also qualitatively different in the ergodic phase where the two-site entanglement decays exponentially. All the results are obtained by means of time-dependent density matrix renormalisation group simulations; they are corroborated by analytical calculations on an effective model. Two-site entanglement has been already measured in cold atoms: Our analysis paves the way for the first direct experimental test of many-body dephasing in the MBL phase.

Non equilibrium phase transitions and Floquet Kibble-Zurek scaling

We study the slow crossing of non-equilibrium quantum phase transitions in periodically-driven systems. We explicitly consider a spin chain with a uniform time-dependent magnetic field and focus on the Floquet state that is adiabatically connected to the ground state of the static model. We find that this {\it Floquet ground state} undergoes a series of quantum phase transitions characterized by a non-trivial topology. To dinamically probe these transitions, we propose to start with a large driving frequency and slowly decrease it as a function of time. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we uncover a Kibble-Zurek scaling that persists in the presence of moderate interactions. This scaling can be used to experimentally demonstrate non-equilibrium transitions that cannot be otherwise observed.

Entanglement entropy in a periodically driven Ising chain

In this work we study the entanglement entropy of a uniform quantum Ising chain in transverse field undergoing a periodic driving of period $τ$ . By means of Floquet theory we show that, for any subchain, the entanglement entropy tends asymptotically to a value $τ$ - periodic in time. We provide a semi-analytical formula for the leading term of this asymptotic regime: It is constant in time and obeys a volume law. The entropy in the asymptotic regime is always smaller than the thermal one: because of integrability the system locally relaxes to a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) density matrix. The leading term of the asymptotic entanglement entropy is completely determined by this GGE density matrix. Remarkably, the asymptotic entropy shows marked features in correspondence to some non-equilibrium quantum phase transitions undergone by a Floquet state analog of the ground state.

Asymptotic work statistics of periodically driven Ising chains

We study the work statistics of a periodically-driven integrable closed quantum system, addressing in particular the role played by the presence of a quantum critical point. Taking the example of a one-dimensional transverse Ising model in the presence of a spatially homogeneous but periodically time-varying transverse field of frequency $ω_0$, we arrive at the characteristic cumulant generating function $G(u)$, which is then used to calculate the work distribution function $P(W)$. By applying the Floquet theory we show that, in the infinite time limit, $P(W)$ converges, starting from the initial ground state, towards an asymptotic steady state value whose small-$W$ behaviour depends only on the properties of the small-wave-vector modes and on a few important ingredients: the time-averaged value of the transverse field, $h_0$, the initial transverse field, $h_{\rm i}$, and the equilibrium quantum critical point $h_c$, which we find to generate a sequence of non-equilibrium critical points $h_{*l}=h_c+lω_0/2$, with $l$ integer. When $h_{\rm i}\neq h_c$, we find a "universal" edge singularity in $P(W)$ at a threshold value of $W_{\rm th}=2|h_{\rm i}-h_c|$ which is entirely determined by $h_{\rm i}$. The form of that singularity --- Dirac delta derivative or square root --- depends on $h_0$ being or not at a non-equilibrium critical point $h_{*l}$. On the contrary, when $h_{\rm i}=h_c$, $G(u)$ decays as a power-law for large $u$, leading to different types of edge singularity at $W_{\rm th}=0$. Generalizing our calculations to the case in which we initialize the system in a finite temperature density matrix, the irreversible entropy generated by the periodic driving is also shown to reach a steady state value in the infinite time limit.

Thermalization in a periodically driven fully-connected quantum Ising ferromagnet

By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On the contrary, if the classical dynamics is regular no thermalization occurs. We further discuss the relationship between ergodicity and dynamical phase transitions, and the relevance of our results to other fully-connected periodically driven models (like the Bose-Hubbard), and possibilities of experimental realization in the case of two coupled BEC.

Loschmidt echo and dynamical fidelity in periodically driven quantum systems

We study the dynamical fidelity $\mathcal{F} (t)$ and the Loschmidt echo $\mathcal{L} (t)$, following a periodic driving of the transverse magnetic field of a quantum Ising chain (back and forth across the quantum critical point) by calculating the overlap between the initial ground state and the state reached after $n$ periods $τ$. We show that $\log{\mathcal{F}}(nτ)/L$ (the logarithm of the fidelity per-site) reaches a steady value in the asymptotic limit $n\to \infty$, and we derive an exact analytical expression for this quantity. Remarkably, the steady state value of $[\log{\mathcal{F}}(nτ\to \infty)]/L$ shows memory of non-trivial phase information which is instead hidden in the case of thermodynamic quantities; this conclusion, moreover, is not restricted to 1-dimensional models.

Linear response as a singular limit for a periodically driven closed quantum system

We address the issue of the validity of linear response theory for a closed quantum system subject to a periodic external driving. Linear response theory (LRT) predicts energy absorption at frequencies of the external driving where the imaginary part of the appropriate response function is different from zero. Here we show that, for a fairly general non-linear many-body system on a lattice subject to an extensive perturbation, this approximation should be expected to be valid only up to a time $t^*$ depending on the strength of the driving, beyond which the true coherent Schrödinger evolution departs from the linear response prediction and the system stops absorbing energy form the driving. We exemplify this phenomenon in detail with the example of a quantum Ising chain subject to a time-periodic modulation of the transverse field, by comparing an exact Floquet analysis with the standard results of LRT. In this context, we also show that if the perturbation is just local, the system is expected in the thermodynamic limit to keep absorbing energy, and LRT works at all times. We finally argue more generally the validity of the scenario presented for closed quantum many-body lattice systems with a bound on the energy-per-site spectrum, discussing the experimental relevance of our findings in the context of cold atoms in optical lattices and ultra-fast spectroscopy experiments.
