Greedy Heuristics for Sampling-Based Motion Planning in High-Dimensional State Spaces

Informed sampling techniques accelerate the convergence of sampling-based motion planners by biasing sampling toward regions of the state space that are most likely to yield better solutions. However, when the current solution path contains redundant or tortuous segments, the resulting informed subset may remain unnecessarily large, slowing convergence. Our prior work addressed this issue by introducing the greedy informed set, which reduces the sampling region based on the maximum heuristic cost along the current solution path. In this article, we formally characterize the behavior of the greedy informed set within Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT*)-like planners and analyze how greedy sampling affects exploration and asymptotic optimality. We then present Greedy RRT* (G-RRT*), a bi-directional anytime variant of RRT* that leverages the greedy informed set to focus sampling in the most promising regions of the search space. Experiments on abstract planning benchmarks, manipulation tasks from the MotionBenchMaker dataset, and a dual-arm Barrett WAM problem demonstrate that G-RRT* rapidly finds initial solutions and converges asymptotically to optimal paths, outperforming state-of-the-art sampling-based planners.

Spectral geometric mean and trace characterizations

We use nearly parallel pure states to characterize positive linear functionals $ϕ$ on $\mathbb{M}_n$ as positive multiples of the trace if and only if $ϕ(A \natural B) \leq \sqrt{ϕ(A) ϕ(B)}$ for all positive definite matrices $A$ and $B$. Here $A \natural B = (A^{-1} \# B)^{1/2} A (A^{-1} \# B)^{1/2}$ represents the spectral geometric mean. For further clarification, we establish novel characterizations through the inequality $ϕ(A \natural B) \leq ϕ((A+B)/2)$ for all positive definite matrices $A$ and $B$. We also present a trace inequality related to quantum fidelity that applies to all positive definite matrices, and demonstrate that it does not characterize the trace.

Path tracking control of self-reconfigurable robot hTetro with four differential drive units

The research interest in mobile robots with independent steering wheels has been increasing over recent years due to their high mobility and better payload capacity over the systems using omnidirectional wheels. However, with more controllable degrees of freedom, almost all of the platforms include redundancy which is modeled using the instantaneous center of rotation (ICR). This paper deals with a Tetris inspired floor cleaning robot hTetro which consists of four interconnected differential-drive units, i.e., each module has a differential drive unit, which can steer individually. Differing from most other steerable wheeled mobile robots, the wheel arrangement of this robot changes because of its self-reconfigurability. In this paper, we proposed a robust path tracking controller that can handle discontinuous trajectories and sudden orientation changes. Singularity problems are resolved on both the mechanical aspect and control aspect. The controller is tested experimentally with the self-reconfigurable robotic platform hero, and results are discussed.

Solvable quadratic Lie algebras in low dimensions

In this paper, we classify solvable quadratic Lie algebras up to dimension 6. In dimensions smaller than 6, we use the Witt decomposition given in \cite{Bou59} and a result in \cite{PU07} to obtain two non-Abelian indecomposable solvable quadratic Lie algebras. In the case of dimension 6, by applying the method of double extension given in \cite{Kac85} and \cite{MR85} and the classification result of singular quadratic Lie algebras in \cite{DPU}, we have three families of solvable quadratic Lie algebras which are indecomposable and not isomorphic.
