Novel Collider and Dark Matter Phenomenology of a Top-philic Z'

We consider extending the Standard Model by including an additional Abelian gauge group broken at low energies under which the right-handed top quark is the only effectively charged Standard Model fermion. The associated gauge boson $(Z')$ is then naturally top-philic and couples only to the rest of the SM particle content at loop-level or via kinetic mixing with the hypercharge gauge boson which is assumed to be small. Working at the effective theory level, we demonstrate that such a minimal extension allows for an improved fitting of the $\sim 2σ$ excess observed in $t\bar{t}h$ searches at the LHC in a region of parameter space that satisfies existing collider constraints. We also present the reach of the LHC at 13 TeV in constraining the relevant region of parameter space. Additionally we show that within the same framework a suitably chosen fermion charged only under the exotic Abelian group can, in the region of parameter space preferred by the $\bar{t}th$ measurements, simultaneously explain the dark matter relic density and the $γ$-ray excess at the galactic center observed by the Fermi-LAT experiment.

SUSY Implications from WIMP Annihilation into Scalars at the Galactic Center

An excess in $γ$-rays emanating from the galactic centre has recently been observed in the Fermi-LAT data. We investigate the new exciting possibility of fitting the signal spectrum by dark matter annihilating dominantly to a Higgs-pseudoscalar pair. We show that the fit to the $γ$-ray excess for the Higgs-pseudoscalar channel can be just as good as for annihilation into bottom-quark pairs. This channel arises naturally in a full model such as the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) and we find regions where dark matter relic density, the $γ$-ray signal and other experimental constraints, can all be satisfied simultaneously. Annihilation into scalar pairs allows for the possibility of detecting the Higgs or pseudoscalar decay into two photons, providing a smoking-gun signal of the model.

SUSY Implications from WIMP Annihilation into Scalars at the Galactic Centre

An excess in gamma-rays emanating from the galactic centre has recently been observed in the Fermi-LAT data. This signal can be interpreted as resulting from WIMP annihilation, with the spectrum well-fit by dark matter annihilating dominantly into either bottom-quark or Higgs pairs. Supersymmetric models provide a well-motivated framework to study the implications of this signal in these channels. With a neutralino dark matter candidate, the gamma-ray excess cannot be easily accommodated in the minimal supersymmetric model, which in any case requires tuning below the percent level to explain the observed Higgs mass. Instead we are naturally led to consider the next-to-minimal model with a singlet superfield. This not only allows for the annihilation channel into bottom-quark pairs to be implemented, but also provides new possibilities for annihilation into Higgs-pseudoscalar pairs. We show that the fit to the gamma-ray excess for the Higgs-pseudoscalar channel can be just as good as for annihilation into bottom-quark pairs. Moreover, in the parameter range of interest, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric model solves the mu-problem and can explain the 125 GeV Higgs mass with improved naturalness. We also consider an extension by adding a right-handed neutrino superfield with the right-handed sneutrino acting as a dark matter candidate. Interestingly, this allows for the annihilation into pseudoscalar pairs which also provide a good fit to the gamma-ray excess. Furthermore, in the case of a neutralino LSP, the late decay of a sneutrino NLSP can non-thermally produce the observed relic abundance. Finally, the WIMP annihilation into scalar pairs allows for the possibility of detecting the Higgs or pseudoscalar decay into two photons, providing a smoking-gun signal of the model.

Leptophilic Dark Matter with $Z'$ interactions

We consider a scenario where dark matter (DM) interacts exclusively with Standard Model (SM) leptons at tree level. Due to the absence of tree-level couplings to quarks, the constraints on leptophilic dark matter arising from direct detection and hadron collider experiments are weaker than those for a generic WIMP. We study a simple model in which interactions of DM with SM leptons are mediated by a leptophilic $Z'$ boson, and determine constraints on this scenario arising from relic density, direct detection, and other experiments. We then determine current LHC limits and project the future discovery reach. We show that, despite the absence of direct interactions with quarks, this scenario can be strongly constrained.

Co-annihilating Dark Matter: Effective Operator Analysis and Collider Phenomenology

We study dark matter (DM) models in which there are two dark sector particles, $χ_1$ and $χ_2$, of near mass. In such models, co-annihilation of $χ_1$ and $χ_2$ may be the dominant process controlling the DM relic density during freezeout in the early universe. In this scenario, there is no significant contribution to direct and indirect detection signals, unless there exists an extreme degeneracy in the masses of the lightest dark sector particles. Therefore, relic density constraints and collider searches provide the most relevant information about these models. We consider Dirac fermion dark matter which couples to standard model (SM) particles via an effective operator. For the collider phenomenology, where an effective field theory may not be valid, we adopt a simple Z' model to provide an appropriate UV completion. We explore the interesting LHC signals that arise from the dark matter production process $pp \rightarrow \overline{χ_1} + χ_2 + \textrm{ jet}$, followed by the decay $χ_2 \rightarrow χ_1 + SM$.

Radion/Dilaton-Higgs Mixing Phenomenology in Light of the LHC

Motivated by the bulk mixing $ξR_5 H^{\dagger}H$ between a massive radion and a bulk scalar Higgs in warped extra dimensions, we construct an effective four dimensional action that---via the AdS/CFT correspondence---describes the most general mixing between the only light states in the theory, the dilaton and the Higgs. Due to conformal invariance, once the Higgs scalar is localized in the bulk of the extra-dimension the coupling between the dilaton and the Higgs kinetic term vanishes, implying a suppressed coupling between the dilaton and massive gauge bosons. We comment on the implications of the mixing and couplings to Standard Model particles. Identifying the recently discovered 125 GeV resonance with the lightest Higgs-like mixed state $ϕ_{-}$, we study the phenomenology and constraints for the heaviest radion-like state $ϕ_{+}$. In particular we find that in the small mixing scenario with a radion-like state $ϕ_{+}$ in the mass range [150,250] GeV, the diphoton channel can provide the best chance of discovery at the LHC if the collaborations extend their searches into this energy range.

The price of being SM-like in SUSY

We compute the tuning in supersymmetric models associated with the constraints from collider measurements of the Higgs couplings to fermions and gauge bosons. In supersymmetric models, a CP-even state with SM Higgs couplings mixes with additional, heavier CP-even states, causing deviations in the Higgs couplings from SM values. These deviations are reduced as the heavy states are decoupled with large soft masses, thereby exacerbating the tuning associated with the electroweak scale. This new source of tuning is different from that derived from collider limits on stops, gluinos and Higgsinos. It can be offset with large tan beta in the MSSM, however this compensating effect is limited in the NMSSM with a large Higgs-singlet coupling due to restrictions on large tan beta from electroweak precision tests. We derive a lower bound on this tuning and show that the level of precision of Higgs coupling measurements at the LHC will probe naturalness in the NMSSM at the few-percent level. This is comparable to the tuning derived from superpartner limits in models with a low messenger scale and split families. Instead the significant improvement in sensitivity of Higgs coupling measurements at the ILC will allow naturalness in these models to be constrained at the per-mille level, beyond any tuning derived from direct superpartner limits.

The Scale-Invariant NMSSM and the 126 GeV Higgs Boson

The recent LHC discovery of a Higgs-like resonance at 126 GeV suggests that the minimal supersymmetric standard model must be modified in order to preserve naturalness. A simple extension is to include a singlet superfield and consider the scale-invariant NMSSM, whose renormalizable superpotential contains no dimensionful parameters. This extension not only solves the μ-problem, but can easily accommodate a 126 GeV Higgs. We study the naturalness of the scale-invariant NMSSM taking into account the recent constraints from LHC searches, flavor physics and electroweak precision tests. We show that TeV-scale stop masses are still allowed in much of the parameter space with 5% tuning for a low messenger scale of 20 TeV, split families (with third-generation sleptons decoupled) and Higgs-singlet coupling λof order one. For larger values of the Higgs-singlet coupling, which can relieve the tuning in the Higgs VEV, an additional tuning in the Higgs mass limits increasing the (lightest) stop mass beyond 1.2 TeV, the gluino mass above 3 TeV, and electroweak charginos and neutralinos beyond 400 GeV for a combined tuning better than 5%. This implies that the natural region of parameter space for the scale-invariant NMSSM will be fully explored at the 14 TeV LHC.

SUSY Hidden in the Continuum

We study models where the superpartners of the ordinary particles have continuous spectra rather than being discrete states, which can occur when the supersymmetric standard model is coupled to an approximately conformal sector. We show that when superpartners that are well into the continuum are produced at a collider they tend to have long decay chains that step their way down through the continuum, emitting many fairly soft standard model particles along the way, with a roughly spherical energy distribution in the center of mass frame.

Warped Universal Extra Dimensions

We consider a 5D warped scenario with a KK-parity symmetry, where the non-trivial warping arises from the dynamics that stabilizes the size of the extra dimension. Generically, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle is the first excitation of the radion field, while the next-to-lightest Kaluza-Klein particle is either the first excitation of the (RH) top quark or the first KK-parity odd Higgs. All these masses are expected to be of order the electroweak scale. We present simple analytical expressions for the masses and wavefunctions of the lowest lying KK modes, and derive the Feynman rules necessary for phenomenological applications. The framework allows to interpolate between a strongly warped scenario a la Randall-Sundrum (RS), and a weakly warped scenario that shares properties of both RS and Universal Extra Dimensions models.

Warped Radion Dark Matter

Warped scenarios offer an appealing solution to the hierarchy problem. We consider a non-trivial deformation of the basic Randall-Sundrum framework that has a KK-parity symmetry. This leads to a stable particle beyond the Standard Model, that is generically expected to be the first KK-parity odd excitation of the radion field. We consider the viability of the KK-radion as a DM candidate in the context of thermal and non-thermal production in the early universe. In the thermal case, the KK-radion can account for the observed DM density when the radion decay constant is in the natural multi-TeV range. We also explore the effects of coannihilations with the first KK excitation of the RH top, as well as the effects of radion-Higgs mixing, which imply mixing between the KK-radion and a KK-Higgs (both being KK-parity odd). The non-thermal scenario, with a high radion decay constant, can also lead to a viable scenario provided the reheat temperature and the radion decay constant take appropriate values, although the reheat temperature should not be much higher than the TeV scale. Direct detection is found to be feasible if the DM has a small (KK-parity odd) Higgs admixture. Indirect detection via a photon signal from the galactic center is an interesting possibility, while the positron and neutrino fluxes from KK-radion annihilations are expected to be rather small. Colliders can probe characteristic aspects of the DM sector of warped scenarios with KK-parity, such as the degeneracy between the radion and the KK-radion (DM) modes.

Continuum Superpartners from Supersymmetric Unparticles

We examine supersymmetric theories with approximately conformal sectors. Without an IR cutoff the theory has a continuum of modes, which are often referred to as "unparticles." Making use of the AdS/CFT correspondence we find that in the presence of a soft-wall, a gap in the spectrum can arise, separating the zero-modes from the continuum modes. In some cases there are also discrete massive levels in the gap. We also show that when supersymmetry is broken the superpartner of a quark or lepton may simply be a bosonic continuum above a gap. Such extensions of the standard model have novel signatures at the LHC.

A Heavy Higgs and a Light Sneutrino NLSP in the MSSM with Enhanced SU(2) D-terms

The Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model provides a solution to the hierarchy problem and leads to the presence of a light Higgs. A Higgs boson with mass above the present experimental bound may only be obtained for relatively heavy third generation squarks, requiring a precise, somewhat unnatural balance between different contributions to the effective Higgs mass parameter. It was recently noticed that somewhat heavier Higgs bosons, which are naturally beyond the LEP bound, may be obtained by enhanced weak SU(2) D-terms. Such contributions appear in models with an enhanced electroweak gauge symmetry, provided the supersymmetry breaking masses associated with the scalars responsible for the breakdown of the enhanced gauge symmetry group to the Standard Model one, are larger than the enhanced symmetry breaking scale. In this article we emphasize that the enhanced SU(2) D-terms will not only raise the Higgs boson mass but also affect the spectrum of the non-standard Higgs bosons, sleptons and squarks, which therefore provide a natural contribution to the T parameter, compensating for the negative one coming from the heavy Higgs boson. The sleptons and non-standard Higgs bosons of these models, in particular, may act in a way similar to the so-called inert Higgs doublet. The phenomenological properties of these models are emphasized and possible cosmological implications as well as collider signatures are described.

Gauge-Higgs Unification, Neutrino Masses and Dark Matter in Warped Extra Dimensions

Gauge Higgs Unification in Warped Extra Dimensions provides an attractive solution to the hierarchy problem. The extension of the Standard Model gauge symmetry to $SO(5)xU(1)_X$ allows the incorporation of the custodial symmetry $SU(2)_R$ plus a Higgs boson doublet with the right quantum numbers under the gauge group. In the minimal model, the Higgs mass is in the range 110-150 GeV, while a light Kaluza Klein (KK) excitation of the top quark appears in the spectrum, providing agreement with precision electroweak measurements and a possible test of the model at a high luminosity LHC. The extension of the model to the lepton sector has several interesting features. We discuss the conditions necessary to obtain realistic charged lepton and neutrino masses. After the addition of an exchange symmetry in the bulk, we show that the odd neutrino KK modes provide a realistic dark matter candidate, with a mass of the order of 1 TeV, which will be probed by direct dark matter detection experiments in the near future.

Collider Phenomenology of Gauge-Higgs Unification Scenarios in Warped Extra Dimensions

We compute the couplings of the zero modes and first excited states of gluons, $W$'s, $Z$ gauge bosons, as well as the Higgs, to the zero modes and first excited states of the third generation quarks, in an RS Gauge-Higgs unification scenario based on a bulk $SO(5)\times U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry, with gauge and fermion fields propagating in the bulk. Using the parameter space consistent with electroweak precision tests and radiative electroweak symmetry breaking, we study numerically the dependence of these couplings on the parameters of our model. Furthermore, after emphasizing the presence of light excited states of the top quark, which couple strongly to the Kaluza Klein gauge bosons, the associated collider phenomenology is analyzed. In particular, we concentrate on the possible detection of the first excited state of the top, $t^1$, which tends to have a higher mass than the ones accessible via regular QCD production processes. We stress that the detection of these particles is still possible due to an increase in the pair production of $t^1$ induced by the first excited state of the gluon, $G^1$.

Gauge-Higgs Unification and Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in Warped Extra Dimensions

We compute the Coleman Weinberg effective potential for the Higgs field in RS Gauge-Higgs unification scenarios based on a bulk SO(5) x U(1)_X gauge symmetry, with gauge and fermion fields propagating in the bulk and a custodial symmetry protecting the generation of large corrections to the T parameter and the coupling of the Z to the bottom quark. We demonstrate that electroweak symmetry breaking may be realized, with proper generation of the top and bottom quark masses for the same region of bulk mass parameters that lead to good agreement with precision electroweak data in the presence of a light Higgs. We compute the Higgs mass and demonstrate that for the range of parameters for which the Higgs boson has Standard Model-like properties, the Higgs mass is naturally in a range that varies between values close to the LEP experimental limit and about 160 GeV. This mass range may be probed at the Tevatron and at the LHC. We analyze the KK spectrum and briefly discuss the phenomenology of the light resonances arising in our model.

Soft Leptogenesis in Warped Extra Dimensions

We implement soft leptogenesis in a warped five dimensional scenario with two branes on the orbifold boundaries coming from an S^{1}/Z_{2} symmetry, and supersymmetry broken on the IR brane. The SM hypermultiplet fields (fermions and Higgs) live in the UV brane and we allow the vector supermultiplets corresponding to the gauge bosons and a hypermultiplet corresponding to the right handed neutrino to live in the bulk. We assume that there are Majorana mass terms for the right handed neutrino superfield fixed on each brane and that there is a Yukawa term involving the right handed neutrino, the left handed neutrino and the Higgs fixed on the UV brane. Supersymmetry is broken by a constant ``superpotential'' on the IR brane, which induces an F-term for the radion hypermultiplet. This F-term leads to a B-term for the right handed sneutrinos as well as a soft SUSY breaking gaugino mass in the 4D theory for the zero modes. The gaugino mass naturally induces an A-term for the right handed sneutrino, left handed sneutrino and the Higgs to be formed through gaugino mediation with a non-trivial CP violating phase. Moreover, we show that within the context of extra dimensions, the condition of out-of-equilibrium decay and the phenomenological constraints on the neutrino mass are both satisfied in a natural way, for UV Majorana masses of the order of the fundamental scale of the theory. Thus all necessary elements for soft leptogenesis are at hand and we are able to predict a correct value for the baryon asymmetry.
