On Decoherence in Quantum Clock Synchronization

We study two quantum versions of the Eddington clock-synchronization protocol in the presence of decoherence. The first protocol uses maximally entangled states to achieve the Heisenberg limit for clock synchronization. The second protocol achieves the limit without using entanglement. We show the equivalence of the two protocols under any single-qubit decoherence model that does not itself provide synchronization information.

Entanglement and the Power of One Qubit

The "Power of One Qubit" refers to a computational model that has access to only one pure bit of quantum information, along with n qubits in the totally mixed state. This model, though not as powerful as a pure-state quantum computer, is capable of performing some computational tasks exponentially faster than any known classical algorithm. One such task is to estimate with fixed accuracy the normalized trace of a unitary operator that can be implemented efficiently in a quantum circuit. We show that circuits of this type generally lead to entangled states, and we investigate the amount of entanglement possible in such circuits, as measured by the multiplicative negativity. We show that the multiplicative negativity is bounded by a constant, independent of n, for all bipartite divisions of the n+1 qubits, and so becomes, when n is large, a vanishingly small fraction of the maximum possible multiplicative negativity for roughly equal divisions. This suggests that the global nature of entanglement is a more important resource for quantum computation than the magnitude of the entanglement.

Information transfer through a one-atom micromaser

We consider a realistic model for the one-atom micromaser consisting of a cavity maintained in a steady state by the streaming of two-level Rydberg atoms passing one at a time through it. We show that it is possible to monitor the robust entanglement generated between two successive experimental atoms passing through the cavity by the control decoherence parameters. We calculate the entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of the micromaser pump parameter. We find that this is in direct correspondence with the difference of the Shannon entropy of the cavity photons before and after the passage of the atoms for a reasonable range of dissipation parameters. It is thus possible to demonstrate information transfer between the cavity and the atoms through this set-up.

Supersolid Phase in Helium-4

The probable observation of a supersolid helium phase was recently reported by Kim {\it et al}. In this article, we confirm their speculation. Based on a theoretical model for solid helium-4, we show that the emergence of such a phase is inevitable. This is the first instance of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a solid. We calculate the BEC transition temperature ($T_c$) and the Landau critical velocity ($v_c$) from the model, which respectively are 215 mK and $251 μ\rm{ms^{-1}}$. They are in excellent agreement with the experimental results; $T_c=$175 mK and $v_c \leq 300 μ\rm{ms^{-1}}$. We also prove that our model possesses the necessary and sufficient condition for the emergence of supersolidity. We briefly comment about similar behaviour in $^3$He.

Turbo Codes over the Real Field

In this article we extend the idea of Turbo codes onto the Real Field. The channel is taken to result in block erasures and the only noise as being that due to quantization. The decoding in this case is reduced to reconstruction of the lost values. The encoding is done using critically sampled filter banks and introduction of an interleaver is found to reduce the mean square quantization error drastically. The permutation that gives the best recoverability is obtained in the 2 Channel case. Results are also obtained for M channel case. The algorithm for reconstruction of the lost values in the absence of quantization noise is obtained.

Ferromagnetism in a dilute magnetic semiconductor -- Generalized RKKY interaction and spin-wave excitations

Carrier-mediated ferromagnetism in a dilute magnetic semiconductor has been studied using i) a single-impurity based generalized RKKY approach which goes beyond linear response theory, and ii) a mean-field-plus-spin-fluctuation (MF+SF) approach within a (purely fermionic) Hubbard-model representation of the magnetic impurities, which incorporates dynamical effects associated with finite frequency spin correlations in the ordered state. Due to a competition between the magnitude of the carrier spin polarization and its oscillation length scale, the ferromagnetic spin coupling is found to be optimized with respect to both hole doping concentration and impurity-carrier spin coupling energy $J$ (or equivalently $U$). The ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_c$, deteremined within the spin-fluctuation theory, corresponds closely with the observed $T_c$ values. Positional disorder of magnetic impurities causes significant stiffening of the high-energy magnon modes. We also explicitly study the stability/instability of the mean-field ferromagnetic state, which highlights the role of competing AF interactions causing spin twisting and noncollinear ferromagnetic ordering.

Klein Paradox in Bosons

We show analytically that the {\it Zitterbewegung} and Klein Paradox, such well known aspects of the Dirac Equation are not found in the case of Bosons. We use the Kemmer-Duffin-Harish Chandra formalism with $β$ matrices to arrive at our results

Bohmian picture of Rydberg atoms

Unlike the previous theoretical results based on standard quantum mechanics that has established the nearly elliptical shapes for the centre-of-mass motion using numerical simulations, we show analytically that the Bohmian trajectories in Rydberg atoms are nearly elliptical.
