Statistical inference of co-movements of stocks during a financial crisis

In order to figure out and to forecast the emergence phenomena of social systems, we propose several probabilistic models for the analysis of financial markets, especially around a crisis. We first attempt to visualize the collective behaviour of markets during a financial crisis through cross-correlations between typical Japanese daily stocks by making use of multi- dimensional scaling. We find that all the two-dimensional points (stocks) shrink into a single small region when a economic crisis takes place. By using the properties of cross-correlations in financial markets especially during a crisis, we next propose a theoretical framework to predict several time-series simultaneously. Our model system is basically described by a variant of the multi-layered Ising model with random fields as non-stationary time series. Hyper-parameters appearing in the probabilistic model are estimated by means of minimizing the 'cumulative error' in the past market history. The justification and validity of our approaches are numerically examined for several empirical data sets.

Kinetic exchange models: From molecular physics to social science

We discuss several multi-agent models that have their origin in the kinetic exchange theory of statistical mechanics and have been recently applied to a variety of problems in the social sciences. This class of models can be easily adapted for simulations in areas other than physics, such as the modeling of income and wealth distributions in economics and opinion dynamics in sociology.

Study of statistical correlations in intraday and daily financial return time series

The aim of this article is to briefly review and make new studies of correlations and co-movements of stocks, so as to understand the "seasonalities" and market evolution. Using the intraday data of the CAC40, we begin by reasserting the findings of Allez and Bouchaud [New J. Phys. 13, 025010 (2011)]: the average correlation between stocks increases throughout the day. We then use multidimensional scaling (MDS) in generating maps and visualizing the dynamic evolution of the stock market during the day. We do not find any marked difference in the structure of the market during a day. Another aim is to use daily data for MDS studies, and visualize or detect specific sectors in a market and periods of crisis. We suggest that this type of visualization may be used in identifying potential pairs of stocks for "pairs trade".

New classes of spin chains from $(S\hat{O}_{(q)}(N)$, $S\hat{p}_{(q)}(N))$ Temperley-Lieb algebras: Data transmission and (q, N) parametrized entanglement entropies

A Temperley-Lieb algebra is extracted from the operator structure of a new class of $N^{2}\times N^{2}$ braid matrices presented and studied in previous papers and designated as $S\hat{O}_{(q)}(N)$, $S\hat{p}%_{(q)}(N)$ for the q-deformed orthogonal and symplectic cases respectively. Spin chain Hamiltonians are derived from such braid matrices and the corresponding chains are studied. Time evolutions of the chains and the possibility of transition of data encoded in the parameters of mixed states from one end to the other are analyzed. The entanglement entropies $% S(q,N)$ of eigenstates of the crucial operator, namely the q-dependent $% N^{2}\times N^{2}$ projector $P_{0}$ appearing in the corresponding Hamiltonian are obtained. Study of entanglements generated under the actions of \ $S\hat{O}(N)$, $S\hat{p}(N)$ braid operators, unitarized with imaginary rapidities is presented as a perspective.

The near-extreme density of intraday log-returns

The extreme event statistics plays a very important role in the theory and practice of time series analysis. The reassembly of classical theoretical results is often undermined by non-stationarity and dependence between increments. Furthermore, the convergence to the limit distributions can be slow, requiring a huge amount of records to obtain significant statistics, and thus limiting its practical applications. Focussing, instead, on the closely related density of "near-extremes" -- the distance between a record and the maximal value -- can render the statistical methods to be more suitable in the practical applications and/or validations of models. We apply this recently proposed method in the empirical validation of an adapted financial market model of the intraday market fluctuations.

A threshold induced phase transition in the kinetic exchange models

We study an ideal-gas-like model where the particles exchange energy stochastically, through energy conserving scattering processes, which take place if and only if at least one of the two particles has energy below a certain energy threshold (interactions are initiated by such low energy particles). This model has an intriguing phase transition in the sense that there is a critical value of the energy threshold, below which the number of particles in the steady state goes to zero, and above which the average number of particles in the steady state is non-zero. This phase transition is associated with standard features like "critical slowing down" and non-trivial values of some critical exponents characterizing the variation of thermodynamic quantities near the threshold energy. The features are exhibited not only in the mean field version but also in the lattice versions.

Fifteen Years of Econophysics Research

Econophysics is a new research field, which makes an attempt to bring economics in the fold of natural sciences or specifically attempts for a "physics of economics". The term Econophysics was formally born in Kolkata in 1995. The entry on Econophysics in The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 2nd Ed., Vol 2, Macmillan, NY (2008), pp 729-732, begins with "... the term 'econophysics' was neologized in 1995 at the second Statphys- Kolkata conference in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India ...". The Econophysics research therefore formally completes fifteen years of research by the end of this year! The importance and proliferation of the interdisciplinary research of Econophysics is highlighted in the special issue of Science & Culture, which presents a collection of twenty nine papers (giving country wise perspectives, reviews of the recent developments and original research communications), written by more than forty renowned experts in physics, mathematics or economics, from all over the world. We present here the list of contents and the editorial. The manuscript files are available at http://fiquant.mas.ecp.fr/chakraboa for preview. This special issue will be published online at http://www.scienceandculture-isna.org/journal.htm, at the end of October 2010.

Opinion formation in the kinetic exchange models: Spontaneous symmetry breaking transition

We propose a minimal multi-agent model for the collective dynamics of opinion formation in the society, by modifying kinetic exchange dynamics studied in the context of income, money or wealth distributions in a society. This model has an intriguing spontaneous symmetry breaking transition to polarized opinion state starting from non-polarized opinion state. In order to analyze the model, we introduce an iterative map version of the model, which has very similar statistical characteristics. An approximate theoretical analysis of the numerical results are also given, based on the iterative map version.

Econophysics: Empirical facts and agent-based models

This article aims at reviewing recent empirical and theoretical developments usually grouped under the term Econophysics. Since its name was coined in 1995 by merging the words Economics and Physics, this new interdisciplinary field has grown in various directions: theoretical macroeconomics (wealth distributions), microstructure of financial markets (order book modelling), econometrics of financial bubbles and crashes, etc. In the first part of the review, we discuss on the emergence of Econophysics. Then we present empirical studies revealing statistical properties of financial time series. We begin the presentation with the widely acknowledged stylized facts which describe the returns of financial assets- fat tails, volatility clustering, autocorrelation, etc.- and recall that some of these properties are directly linked to the way time is taken into account. We continue with the statistical properties observed on order books in financial markets. For the sake of illustrating this review, (nearly) all the stated facts are reproduced using our own high-frequency financial database. Finally, contributions to the study of correlations of assets such as random matrix theory and graph theory are presented. In the second part of the review, we deal with models in Econophysics through the point of view of agent-based modelling. Amongst a large number of multi-agent-based models, we have identified three representative areas. First, using previous work originally presented in the fields of behavioural finance and market microstructure theory, econophysicists have developed agent-based models of order-driven markets that are extensively presented here. Second, kinetic theory models designed to explain some empirical facts on wealth distribution are reviewed. Third, we briefly summarize game theory models by reviewing the now classic minority game and related problems.

Quantum entanglement: The unitary 8-vertex braid matrix with imaginary rapidity

We study quantum entanglements induced on product states by the action of 8-vertex braid matrices, rendered unitary with purely imaginary spectral parameters (rapidity). The unitarity is displayed via the "canonical factorization" of the coefficients of the projectors spanning the basis. This adds one more new facet to the famous and fascinating features of the 8-vertex model. The double periodicity and the analytic properties of the elliptic functions involved lead to a rich structure of the 3-tangle quantifying the entanglement. We thus explore the complex relationship between topological and quantum entanglement.

Wealth distribution: To be or not to be a Gamma?

We review some aspects, especially those we can tackle analytically, of a minimal model of closed economy analogous to the kinetic theory model of ideal gases where the agents exchange wealth amongst themselves such that the total wealth is conserved, and each individual agent saves a fraction (0 < lambda < 1) of wealth before transaction. We are interested in the special case where the fraction lambda is constant for all the agents (global saving propensity) in the closed system. We show by moment calculations that the resulting wealth distribution cannot be the Gamma distribution that was conjectured in Phys. Rev. E 70, 016104 (2004). We also derive a form for the distribution at low wealth, which is a new result.

Entangled three-particle states in magnetic field: Periodic correlations and density matrices

We present a novel study of the time evolutions of entangled states of three spin-1/2 particles in the presence of a constant external magnetic field, which causes the individual spins to precess and leads to remarkable periodicities in the correlations and density matrices. The emerging patterns of periodicity are studied explicitly for different entangled states and in detail for a particular initial configuration of the velocities. Contributions to precession of anomalous magnetic moments are analysed and general results are also obtained. We then introduce an electric field orthogonal to the magnetic field, linking to the preceding case via a suitable Lorentz transformation, and obtain the corresponding Wigner rotations of the spin states. Finally, we point out for the first time that the entangled states corresponding to well-known ones in the study of 3-particle entanglements, may be classified systematically using a particular coupling of three angular momenta.

Variational principle for the Pareto power law

A mechanism is proposed for the appearance of power law distributions in various complex systems. It is shown that in a conservative mechanical system composed of subsystems with different numbers of degrees of freedom a robust power-law tail can appear in the equilibrium distribution of energy as a result of certain superpositions of the canonical equilibrium energy densities of the subsystems. The derivation only uses a variational principle based on the Boltzmann entropy, without assumptions outside the framework of canonical equilibrium statistical mechanics. Two examples are discussed, free diffusion on a complex network and a kinetic model of wealth exchange. The mechanism is illustrated in the general case through an exactly solvable mechanical model of a dimensionally heterogeneous system.

Basic kinetic wealth-exchange models: common features and open problems

We review the basic kinetic wealth-exchange models of Angle [J. Angle, Social Forces 65 (1986) 293; J. Math. Sociol. 26 (2002) 217], Bennati [E. Bennati, Rivista Internazionale di Scienze Economiche e Commerciali 35 (1988) 735], Chakraborti and Chakrabarti [A. Chakraborti, B. K. Chakrabarti, Eur. Phys. J. B 17 (2000) 167], and of Dragulescu and Yakovenko [A. Dragulescu, V. M. Yakovenko, Eur. Phys. J. B 17 (2000) 723]. Analytical fitting forms for the equilibrium wealth distributions are proposed. The influence of heterogeneity is investigated, the appearance of the fat tail in the wealth distribution and the relaxation to equilibrium are discussed. A unified reformulation of the models considered is suggested.

Relaxation in statistical many-agent economy models

We review some statistical many-agent models of economic and social systems inspired by microscopic molecular models and discuss their stochastic interpretation. We apply these models to wealth exchange in economics and study how the relaxation process depends on the parameters of the system, in particular on the saving propensities that define and diversify the agent profiles.

Gamma-distribution and wealth inequality

We discuss the equivalence between kinetic wealth-exchange models, in which agents exchange wealth during trades, and mechanical models of particles, exchanging energy during collisions. The universality of the underlying dynamics is shown both through a variational approach based on the minimization of the Boltzmann entropy and a complementary microscopic analysis of the collision dynamics of molecules in a gas. In various relevant cases the equilibrium distribution is the same for all these models, namely a gamma-distribution with suitably defined temperature and number of dimensions. This in turn allows one to quantify the inequalities observed in the wealth distributions and suggests that their origin should be traced back to very general underlying mechanisms: for instance, it follows that the smaller the fraction of the relevant quantity (e.g. wealth or energy) that agents can exchange during an interaction, the closer the corresponding equilibrium distribution is to a fair distribution.

The topic discussed here should illustrate how the complex economic system (financial market) enrichens the list of existing dynamical systems that physicists have been studying for long.
