Decreasing the Surgical Errors by Neurostimulation of Primary Motor Cortex and the Associated Brain Activation via Neuroimaging

Acquisition of fine motor skills is a time-consuming process as it requires frequent repetitions. Transcranial electrical stimulation is a promising means of enhancing simple motor skill development via neuromodulatory mechanisms. Here, we report that non-invasive neurostimulation facilitates the learning of complex fine bimanual motor skills associated with a surgical task. During the training of 17 medical students on the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) pattern cutting task over a period of 12 days, we observed that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) decreased the error level and the variability in performance, compared to the Sham group. By concurrently monitoring the cortical activations of the subjects via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), our study showed that the cortical activation significantly stimulated by tDCS. The lowered performance error and the increased brain activation were retained after one-month post-training. This work supports the use of tDCS to enhance performance accuracy in fine bimanual motor tasks.

Kilonova Luminosity Function Constraints based on Zwicky Transient Facility Searches for 13 Neutron Star Mergers

We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run. We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization of 4480 deg^2, median distance of 267 Mpc and false alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 1e-25 per yr. The ZTF coverage had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8mag, and median response time of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UVOIR photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and 3 radio. We find no promising kilonova (radioactivity-powered counterpart) and we convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as GW170817 at discovery (-16.1mag), we calculate our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag (extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at 1 mag/day (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag assuming flat (fading) evolution, at 90% confidence. If we further account for the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have Mej < 0.03 Msun or Xlan>1e-4 or phi>30deg to be consistent with our limits. (Abridged)

GROWTH on S190425z: Searching thousands of square degrees to identify an optical or infrared counterpart to a binary neutron star merger with the Zwicky Transient Facility and Palomar Gattini IR

The third observing run by LVC has brought the discovery of many compact binary coalescences. Following the detection of the first binary neutron star merger in this run (LIGO/Virgo S190425z), we performed a dedicated follow-up campaign with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Palomar Gattini-IR telescopes. The initial skymap of this single-detector gravitational wave (GW) trigger spanned most of the sky observable from Palomar Observatory. Covering 8000 deg$^2$ of the initial skymap over the next two nights, corresponding to 46\% integrated probability, ZTF system achieved a depth of $\approx$\,21 $m_\textrm{AB}$ in $g$- and $r$-bands. Palomar Gattini-IR covered 2200 square degrees in $J$-band to a depth of 15.5\,mag, including 32\% integrated probability based on the initial sky map. The revised skymap issued the following day reduced these numbers to 21\% for the Zwicky Transient Facility and 19\% for Palomar Gattini-IR. We narrowed 338,646 ZTF transient "alerts" over the first two nights of observations to 15 candidate counterparts. Two candidates, ZTF19aarykkb and ZTF19aarzaod, were particularly compelling given that their location, distance, and age were consistent with the GW event, and their early optical lightcurves were photometrically consistent with that of kilonovae. These two candidates were spectroscopically classified as young core-collapse supernovae. The remaining candidates were ruled-out as supernovae. Palomar Gattini-IR did not identify any viable candidates with multiple detections only after merger time. We demonstrate that even with single-detector GW events localized to thousands of square degrees, systematic kilonova discovery is feasible.

Generating a second-order topological insulator with multiple corner states by periodic driving

We study the effects of periodic driving on a variant of the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model defined on a square lattice. In the absence of driving, the model has both topological and nontopological phases depending on the different parameter values. We also study the anisotropic BHZ model and show that, unlike the isotropic model, it has a nontopological phase which has states localized on only two of the four edges of a finite-sized square. When an appropriate term is added, the edge states get gapped and gapless states appear at the four corners of a square; we have shown that these corner states can be labeled by the eigenvalues of a certain operator. When the system is driven periodically by a sequence of two pulses, multiple corner states may appear depending on the driving frequency and other parameters. We discuss to what extent the system can be characterized by topological invariants such as the Chern number and a diagonal winding number. We have shown that the locations of the jumps in these invariants can be understood in terms of the Floquet operator at both the time-reversal invariant momenta and other momenta which have no special symmetries.

SN 2018hna: 1987A-like supernova with a signature of shock breakout

High cadence ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of the peculiar Type II supernova (SN) 2018hna are presented. The early phase multiband light curves exhibit the adiabatic cooling envelope emission following the shock breakout up to ~14 days from the explosion. SN~2018hna has a rise time of $\sim$\,88 days in the V-band, similar to SN 1987A. A $\rm^{56}Ni$ mass of ~0.087$\pm$0.004 $\rm M_{\odot}$ is inferred for SN 2018hna from its bolometric light curve. Hydrodynamical modelling of the cooling phase suggests a progenitor with a radius ~50 $\rm R_{\odot}$, a mass of ~14-20 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and explosion energy of ~1.7-2.9$\rm \times$ $\rm 10^{51}\ erg$. The smaller inferred radius of the progenitor than a standard red supergiant is indicative of a blue supergiant progenitor of SN 2018hna. A sub-solar metallicity (~0.3 $\rm Z_{\odot}$) is inferred for the host galaxy UGC 07534, concurrent with the low-metallicity environments of 1987A-like events.

Many-body localized phase of bosonic dipoles in a tilted optical lattice

We chart out the ground state phase diagram and demonstrate the presence of a many-body localized (MBL) phase for an experimentally realizable one-dimensional (1D) constrained dipole boson model in the presence of an Aubry-Andre (AA) potential whose strength $λ_0$ can be tuned to precipitate an ergodic-MBL transition. We discuss the signature of such a transition in the quantum dynamics of the model by computing its response subsequent to a sudden quench of $λ_0$. We show that the MBL and the ergodic phases can be clearly distinguished by study of post-quench dynamics and provide an estimate for minimal time up to which experiments need to track the response of the system to confirm the onset of the MBL phase. We suggest experiments which can test our theory.

Probing the role of long-range interactions in the dynamics of a long-range Kitaev Chain

We study the role of long-range interactions on the non-equilibrium dynamics considering a long-range Kitaev chain in which superconducting term decays with distance between two sites in a power-law fashion characterised by an exponent $α$. We show that the Kibble-Zurek scaling exponent, dictating the power-law decay of the defect density in the final state reached following a slow quenching of the chemical potential ($μ$) across a quantum critical point, depends non-trivially on the exponent $α$ as long as $α<2$; on the other hand, for $α>2$, one finds that the exponent saturates to the corresponding well-know value of $1/2$ expected for the short-range model. Furthermore, studying the dynamical quantum phase transitions manifested in the non-analyticities in the rate function of the return possibility ($I(t)$) in subsequent temporal evolution following a sudden change in $μ$, we show the existence of a new region; in this region, we find three instants of cusp singularities in $I(t)$ associated with a single sector of Fisher zeros. Notably, the width of this region shrinks as $α$ increases and vanishes in the limit $α\to 2$.

Anti-Kibble-Zurek Behavior in Crossing the Quantum Critical Point of a Thermally Isolated System Driven by a Noisy Control Field

We show that a thermally isolated system driven across a quantum phase transition by a noisy control field exhibits anti-Kibble-Zurek behavior, whereby slower driving results in higher excitations. We characterize the density of excitations as a function of the ramping rate and the noise strength. The optimal driving time to minimize excitations is shown to scale as a universal power law of the noise strength. Our findings reveal the limitations of adiabatic protocols such as quantum annealing and demonstrate the universality of the optimal ramping rate.

Weakening of the spin density wave gap at low temperatures in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

We report on temperature dependent scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies of undoped SrFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals from 6 K to 292 K. Resistivity data show spin density wave (SDW) transition at T$_{SDW}$ $\approx$ 205 K and the superconducting transition at $\sim$ 21 K while magnetic susceptibility does not show any superconductivity. Conductance maps and local tunneling spectra show an electronically homogeneous surface at all studied temperatures. Tunnel spectra correlate well with the SDW transition with a depression in the density of states near the Fermi energy below T$_{SDW}$. On further lowering the temperature, the width of this partial energy gap associated with the SDW decreases. Using the anti-correlation of superconducting phase with SDW, we interpret this gap weakening as a precursor to superconductivity. This may give rise to a facile nucleation of superconductivity near defects.

Electronic inhomogeneities in the superconducting phase of CaFe1.96Ni0.04As2 single crystals

Superconductivity in Iron-Arsenic based pnictides emerges in close proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AFM)ordered parent state and the AFM phase overlaps with superconducting (SC) phase in some pnictides for certain range of doping. CaFe2-xNixAs2 belongs to this category, where both the phases overlap. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate the local electronic properties of uderdoped CaFe1.96Ni0.04As2 single crystals in the vicinity of the boundary of the two phases. Both resistivity and magnetic measurements show that a tiny portion (~ 1.2 %) of this compound becomes superconductor below the SC onset temperature TC ~ 15 K. Topographic images show reasonably flat surface with signatures of atomic resolution. High temperature spectra are spatially homogeneous and show signatures of spin density wave (SDW) gap with a finite density of states near the Fermi energy. Below TC, spectra show significant spatial inhomogeneity with a SDW gap everywhere but at some locations we also see an asymmetric or symmetric depression in ~ +/- 5 meV energy range together with the SDW gap. Inhomogeneity reduces significantly as the temperature goes above TC and disappears completely far above TC. These observations are discussed in terms of an inhomogeneous electronic phase that may exist due to the vicinity of this composition to the SC dome boundary on the underdoped side of the phase diagram.

Statistics of work distribution in periodically driven closed quantum systems

We study the statistics of the work distribution $P(w)$ in a $d-$dimensional closed quantum system with linear dimension $L$ subjected to a periodic drive with frequency $ω_0$. We show that after an integer number of periods of the drive, the corresponding rate function $I(w)= -\ln[P(w)]/L^d$ satisfies an universal lower bound $I(0)\ge n_d$ and has a zero at $w=Q$, where $n_d$ and $Q$ are the defect density and residual energy generated during the drive. We supplement our results by calculating $I(w)$ for a class of $d$-dimensional integrable models and show that it has oscillatory dependence on $ω_0$ originating from Stuckelberg interference generated during multiple passage through intermediate quantum critical points or regions during the drive. We suggest experiments to test our theory.

Role of trap-induced scales in non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting trapped bosons

We use a time-dependent hopping expansion technique to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of a harmonic trap characterized by a force constant $K$. We show that after a sudden quench of the hopping amplitude $J$ across the superfluid (SF)-Mott insulator(MI) transition, the SF order parameter $|Δ_{\bf r}(t)|$ and the local density fluctuation $δn_{\bf r}(t)$ exhibit sudden decoherence beyond a trap-induced time scale $T_0 \sim K^{-1/2}$. We also show that after a slow linear ramp down of $J$, $|Δ_{\bf r}|$ and the boson defect density $P_{\bf r}$ display a novel non-monotonic spatial profile. Both these phenomena can be explained as consequences of trap-induced time and length scales affecting the dynamics and can be tested by concrete experiments.

Study of unconventional superfluid phases and the phase dynamics in spin-orbit coupled bose system

We study the phase distribution and its dynamics in spin-orbit coupled two component ultracold Bosons for finite size system. Using an inhomogeneous meanfield analysis we demonstrate how phase distribution evolves as we tune the spin-orbit coupling $γ$ and $t$, the spin-independent hopping. For $t>>γ$ we find the homogeneous superfluid phase. As we increase $γ$, differences in the phases of the order parameter grows leading to twisted superfluid phase. For $t \sim γ$ competing orderings in the phase distribution is observed. At large $γ$ limit a Ferro-Magnetic stripe ordering appears along the diagonal. We explain that this is due to the frustration bought in by the spin-orbit interaction. Isolated vortex formation is also shown to appear. We also investigate the possible collective modes. In deep superfluid regime we derive the equation of motion for the phases following a semi-classical approximation. Imaginary frequencies indicating the damped modes are seen to appear and the dynamics of lowest normal modes are discussed.

A projection operator approach to the Bose-Hubbard model

We develop a projection operator formalism for studying both the zero temperature equilibrium phase diagram and the non-equilibrium dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model. Our work, which constitutes an extension of Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 095702 (2011), shows that the method provides an accurate description of the equilibrium zero temperature phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model for several lattices in two- and three-dimensions (2D and 3D). We show that the accuracy of this method increases with the coordination number $z_0$ of the lattice and reaches to within 0.5% of quantum Monte Carlo data for lattices with $z_0=6$. We compute the excitation spectra of the bosons using this method in the Mott and the superfluid phases and compare our results with mean-field theory. We also show that the same method may be used to analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of the model both in the Mott phase and near the superfluid-insulator quantum critical point where the hopping amplitude $J$ and the on-site interaction $U$ satisfy $z_0J/U \ll 1$. In particular, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the model both subsequent to a sudden quench of the hopping amplitude $J$ and during a ramp from $J_i$ to $J_f$ characterized by a ramp time $τ$ and exponent $α$: $J(t)=J_i +(J_f-J_i) (t/τ)^α$. We compute the wavefunction overlap $F$, the residual energy $Q$, the superfluid order parameter $Δ(t)$, the equal-time order parameter correlation function $C(t)$, and the defect formation probability $P$ for the above-mentioned protocols and provide a comparison of our results to their mean-field counterparts. We find that $Q$, $F$, and $P$ do not exhibit the expected universal scaling. We explain this absence of universality and show that our results for linear ramps compare well with the recent experimental observations.

Evidence of mobile carriers with Charge Ordering gap in Epitaxial Pr$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ Thin Films

Epitaxial thin films of charge-ordered Pr$_{0.625}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ have been studied using variable temperature Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). The as grown films were found to be granular while the annealed films show atomic terraces at all temperatures and are found to be electronically homogeneous in 78-300K temperature range. At high temperatures (T$>$T$_{CO}\approx$ 230 K) the local tunnel spectra of the annealed films show a depression in the density of states (DOS) near Fermi energy implying a pseudogap with a significant DOS at E$_F$. The gap feature becomes more robust with cooling with a sharp jump in DOS at E$_F$ at T$_{CO}$ and with a gap value of $\sim$0.3 eV at 78K. At low temperatures we find a small but finite DOS at E$_F$ indicative of some delocalized carriers in the CO phase together with an energy gap. This is consistent with bulk transport, which shows weakening of the activation gap with cooling below 200K, and indicates the presence of two types of carriers at low temperatures.
