Energy Estimation of the Hamming Slice and its Applications

Let $R=\mathbb{Z}/(2^n-1)\mathbb{Z}$, where $n\geq 3$, and let $S_w\subseteq R$ be the residues whose canonical $n$-digit binary expansion has Hamming weight $w$. We obtain, in particular, an asymptotic formula for the additive energy of $S_w$ \[ E(S_w)=\frac{\left|S_w\right|^4}{|R|}+ \mathcal{O}\left(|R|^3 n^{-3} \right), \] which holds uniformly in $w$. The error term is optimal in order, with a matching lower bound for $w=\lfloor n/2+\sqrt{n} \rfloor$. It follows that triple sums of arbitrary unit dilates have asymptotically uniform representation counts when $\prod_{j=1}^{3} \left|S_{w_j} \right| /\left(|R| n^{-3/5}\right)^3\to\infty$, and that double sums have asymptotically full support when $\left|S_{w_1}\right| \left|S_{w_2} \right|/\left(|R| n^{-3/4}\right)^2\to\infty$. In the proof, modular collisions are represented using a cyclic binary carry automaton; this appears to be a novel approach in this area of problems.

Different Phases in a Dissipative Rydberg Lattice : Roles of Occupancy and On-site Interaction

We study a two-level dissipative non-equilibrium bosonic Rydberg system in an optical lattice, where multiple atoms can occupy a single site. The system is treated using two different approaches: solution of the master equation using a mean-field approximation, and direct numerical simulation of an equivalent quantum model. It is found that, depending on the on-site interaction strength, the system can either be uniform or have an antiferromagnet-like density-wave structure in terms of the Rydberg excitation distribution. Our mean-field treatment detects an interesting oscillatory phase as well, but the numerical simulation in 1D does not capture it. The origin of all these phases are investigated by studying the spatial correlations, and by calculating the fixed points of the dynamics. It is observed that an initial population difference across the sublattices helps to enhance the density-wave order. The scaling behavior of the system is also analyzed and a signature of weak universality is obtained.

Achieving Maximum Utilization in Optimal Time for Learning or Convergence in the Kolkata Paise Restaurant Problem

The objective of the KPR agents are to learn themselves in the minimum (learning) time to have maximum success or utilization probability ($f$). A dictator can easily solve the problem with $f = 1$ in no time, by asking every one to form a queue and go to the respective restaurant, resulting in no fluctuation and full utilization from the first day (convergence time $τ= 0$). It has already been shown that if each agent chooses randomly the restaurants, $f = 1 - e^{-1} \simeq 0.63$ (where $e \simeq 2.718$ denotes the Euler number) in zero time ($τ= 0$). With the only available information about yesterday's crowd size in the restaurant visited by the agent (as assumed for the rest of the strategies studied here), the crowd avoiding (CA) strategies can give higher values of $f$ but also of $τ$. Several numerical studies of modified learning strategies actually indicated increased value of $f = 1 - α$ for $α\to 0$, with $τ\sim 1/α$. We show here using Monte Carlo technique, a modified Greedy Crowd Avoiding (GCA) Strategy can assure full utilization ($f = 1$) in convergence time $τ\simeq eN$, with of course non-zero probability for an even larger convergence time. All these observations suggest that the strategies with single step memory of the individuals can never collectively achieve full utilization ($f = 1$) in finite convergence time and perhaps the maximum possible utilization that can be achieved is about eighty percent ($f \simeq 0.80$) in an optimal time $τ$ of order ten, even when $N$ the number of customers or of the restaurants goes to infinity.

A Lower Bound on the Constant in the Fourier Min-Entropy/Influence Conjecture

We describe a new construction of Boolean functions. A specific instance of our construction provides a 30-variable Boolean function having min-entropy/influence ratio to be $128/45 \approx 2.8444$ which is presently the highest known value of this ratio that is achieved by any Boolean function. Correspondingly, $128/45$ is also presently the best known lower bound on the universal constant of the Fourier min-entropy/influence conjecture.

Counting unate and balanced monotone Boolean functions

We show that the problem of counting the number of $n$-variable unate functions reduces to the problem of counting the number of $n$-variable monotone functions. Using recently obtained results on $n$-variable monotone functions, we obtain counts of $n$-variable unate functions up to $n=9$. We use an enumeration strategy to obtain the number of $n$-variable balanced monotone functions up to $n=7$. We show that the problem of counting the number of $n$-variable balanced unate functions reduces to the problem of counting the number of $n$-variable balanced monotone functions, and consequently, we obtain the number of $n$-variable balanced unate functions up to $n=7$. Using enumeration, we obtain the numbers of equivalence classes of $n$-variable balanced monotone functions, unate functions and balanced unate functions up to $n=6$. Further, for each of the considered sub-class of $n$-variable monotone and unate functions, we also obtain the corresponding numbers of $n$-variable non-degenerate functions.

Influence of a Set of Variables on a Boolean Function

The influence of a variable is an important concept in the analysis of Boolean functions. The more general notion of influence of a set of variables on a Boolean function has four separate definitions in the literature. In the present work, we introduce a new definition of influence of a set of variables which is based on the auto-correlation function and develop its basic theory. Among the new results that we obtain are generalisations of the Poincaré inequality and the edge expansion property of the influence of a single variable. Further, we obtain new characterisations of resilient and bent functions using the notion of influence. We show that the previous definition of influence due to Fischer et. al. (2002) and Blais (2009) is half the value of the auto-correlation based influence that we introduce. Regarding the other prior notions of influence, we make a detailed study of these and show that each of these definitions do not satisfy one or more desirable properties that a notion of influence may be expected to satisfy.

Co-evolution of point defects and Cr-rich nano-phase in binary Fe-20 at.% Cr alloy: A comprehensive investigation using positron annihilation spectroscopy and atom probe tomography

The role of point defects in temporal evolution of Cr-rich alpha-prime phase separation in binary Fe-20 at.% Cr alloy is elucidated by intercepting the long term (upto 1000 h at 773 K) aging at regular intervals and probing by a combination of atom probe tomography (APT) and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). Since the Cr concentration of nano-scale α/ phase in Fe-20 at.% Cr alloy increases continually on aging, the point defects play active role throughout the aging duration. The near-atomic resolution of APT and self-seeking ability of positrons towards point defects make this analysis possible. The difference of positron affinities between Fe and Cr enables identification of the Cr-rich nano-phases that are specifically associated with defects; they would otherwise be indiscernible in the absence of defect. Thus, the temporal evolution of Cr-rich nano-phase along with the associated point defects can be fully characterized at each stage of aging using APT and PAS, respectively. The combined APT-PAS study shows that Cr-rich alpha-prime precipitation is preceded by vacancy-Cr complexes that act as nucleation sites for Cr clusters, which in turn, cause an early rise in micro-hardness due to cluster hardening. Interestingly, this is accompanied by a significant rise in point defect concentration. Our results depict that the vacancies present in the core of the alpha-prime precipitates migrate towards the precipitates interface during the course of aging and eventually get recovered resulting in virtually defect-free precipitates. This study chronicles the way the point defects shape the process of alpha-prime phase separation throughout the entire length of aging.

Nucleation-growth versus spinodal decomposition in Fe-Cr alloys: an experimental verification by atom probe tomography and small angle neutron scattering

Identifying the operative mode of phase separation (spinodal decomposition (SD) or nucleation-growth (NG)) remains a largely unexplored area of research in spite of its importance. The present work examines this critically in Fe-Cr system using atom probe tomography (APT) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and establishes the framework to distinguish the two different modes of alpha-prime phase separation in thermally aged Fe-35 at.% Cr and Fe-20 at.% Cr alloys. Independent APT analysis determines the mode of phase separation on the basis of: (i) presence / absence of periodic chemical fluctuation through radial distribution function analysis; and (ii) inter-phase interface characteristics (diffuse / sharp). SANS analysis, in contrast, yields virtually indistinguishable correlation peaks for both the modes, which necessitates further investigation of the several different aspects of SANS profiles in the light of APT results. For the first time, key features of SANS profiles have been identified that can unambiguously distinguish SD from NG in Fe-Cr system: (i) nature of temporal evolution of FWHM of the correlation peak; and (ii) appropriate value of 'gamma' for fitting with the dynamic scaling model ('gamma'= 6 for SD, Fe-35 at.% Cr alloy; 'gamma'= 4 for NG, Fe-20 at.% Cr alloy).

Separation Results for Boolean Function Classes

We show (almost) separation between certain important classes of Boolean functions. The technique that we use is to show that the total influence of functions in one class is less than the total influence of functions in the other class. In particular, we show (almost) separation of several classes of Boolean functions which have been studied in the coding theory and cryptography from classes which have been studied in combinatorics and complexity theory.

Magnetic ordering of the martensite phase in Ni-Co-Mn-Sn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys

The magnetic state of low temperature martensite phase in Co-substituted Ni-Mn-Sn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) has been investigated, in view of numerous conflicting reports of occurrences of spin glass (SG), superparamagnetism (SPM) or long range anti-ferromagnetic (AF) ordering. Combination of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies provide a clear evidence for AF order in martensitic phase of Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 alloy and rule out SPM and SG orders. Identical studies on another alloy of close composition of Ni44Co6Mn40Sn10 point to presence of SG order in martensitic phase and absence of SPM behavior, contrary to earlier report. SANS results do show presence of nanometre-sized clusters but they are found to grow in size from 3 nm at 30 K to 11 nm at 300 K, and do not correlate with magnetism in these alloys.

Giant magnetocaloric effect from reverse martensitic transformation in Ni-Mn-Ga-Cu ferromagnetic shape memory alloys

In an effort to produce Giant Magnetocaloric effect (GMCE) near room temperature, in a first ever such study, the austenite transformation temperature (As) was fine tuned to ferromagnetic Curie temperature (TC) in Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (FSMA) and a large GMCE of delta-SM = - 81.75 J/Kg-K was achieved in Ni50Mn18.5Cu6.5Ga25 alloy during reverse martensitic transformation (heating cycle) for a magnetic field change of 9 T at 302.5 K. Fine tuning of As with TC was achieved by Cu substitution in Ni50Mn25-xCuxGa25 (0< x < 7.0)-based FSMAs. Characterizations of these alloys were carried out using Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and DC magnetization measurements. Addition of Cu to stoichiometric Heusler type Ni2MnGa increases the martensitic transformation temperatures and decreases TC. Concurrently, DSM increases with Cu addition and peaks at 6.5 at. % Cu for which there is a virtual overlap between TC and As. Maximum Refrigerant Capacity (RCP) of 327.01 J/Kg was also achieved in the heating cycle for 9 T field change at 302.5 K. Corresponding values for the cooling cycle measurements (measured during forward transformation) were 30.4 J/Kg-K and 123.52 J/Kg respectively for the same 6.5 at. % Cu sample and same thermo-magnetic conditions.

Neutron diffraction evidence for kinetic arrest of first-order magneto-structural phase transitions in some functional magnetic materials

Neutron diffraction measurements, performed in presence of an external magnetic field, have been used to show structural evidence for the kinetic arrest of the first-order phase transition from (i) the high temperature austenite phase to the low temperature martensite phase in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni37Co11Mn42.5Sn9.5, (ii) the higher temperature ferromagnetic phase to the lower temperature antiferromagnetic phase in the half-doped charge ordered compound La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and (iii) the formation of a glass-like arrested state (GLAS). The CHUF (cooling and heating under unequal fields) protocol has been used to establish phase coexistence of metastable and equilibrium states of GLAS and also to demonstrate the devitrification of the arrested metastable states in the neutron diffraction patterns. We also explore the field-temperature (H,T) phase diagram for the two compounds, which depicts the kinetic arrest line TK(H). TK is seen to increase as H increases.
