Deep numerical schemes for systems of Ergodic BSDEs with applications to regime-switching forward utilities

In this paper, we introduce two neural-network-based numerical schemes for solving systems of coupled ergodic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (eBSDEs), motivated by the approximation of optimal strategies within the framework of forward utilities in a regime-switching stochastic factor model. Our approach builds on the representation of such models through systems of eBSDEs introduced in [HLT20]. We first establish a link between the solution of the system of ergodic BSDEs and that of an associated multidimensional BSDE with random terminal time, given by the hitting time of the positive recurrent stochastic factor. Building on this representation, we introduce a locally additive deep learning scheme obtained by minimizing aggregated local error terms. We then present a new Deep Galerkin Method (DGM) inspired algorithm that minimizes the residual of the associated ergodic PDE system, relying on a representation of the ergodic cost. Finally, we apply this framework to regime-switching forward utilities in a stochastic factor model. We first derive a general consistency SPDE that characterizes regime-switching forward utilities and retrieve their representation with systems of ergodic BSDEs in the homothetic case. Numerical experiments demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods, with a particular focus on the impact on forward preferences of taking into account regime switches.

Law-invariant BSDEs and dynamic risk measures: new characterizations

We provide a new characterization of law-invariant backward stochastic differential equations (i.e. BSDEs) with quadratic growth. This answers the open question raised in Xu--Xu--Zhou (2022) on necessary conditions for law-invariance of g-expectations, and extends the analysis to general (possibly non-deterministic) generators. We also introduce and compare several dynamic notions of law-invariance in continuous time, establishing precise relationships among them. As an application, we study dynamic risk measures. For cash-additive, normalized risk measures, we recover and extend to continuous time the Kupper--Schachermayer (2009) characterization obtained in discrete time, showing that law-invariance and strong time-consistency force an entropic structure. We further obtain a new characterization of cash non-additive law-invariant risk measures generated by BSDEs via a time-dependent certainty equivalent representation.

Optimal investment and consumption under forward utilities with relative performance concerns

We study a n-player and mean-field portfolio optimization problem under relative performance concerns with non-zero volatility, for wealth and consumption. The consistency assumption defining forward relative performance processes leads to a sufficient characterization of such processes with mean of a Stochastic HJB equations, which highlights the link between wealth and consumption utility, and also characterizes the optimal strategies. In particular, forward relative performance processes with a wealth utility of CRRA type and separable time and space dependence necessarily have a consumption utility of the same form, with the same risk aversion parameter. This characterization gives a better understanding of the drift condition ensuring time consistency. In this setting, we establish closed form of the Nash equilibrium for both the n-player and mean eld problems. We also provide some numerical examples.

Deep learning scheme for forward utilities using ergodic BSDEs

In this paper, we present a probabilistic numerical method for a class of forward utilities in a stochastic factor model. For this purpose, we use the representation of dynamic consistent utilities with mean of ergodic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (eBSDEs) introduced by Liang and Zariphopoulou in [27]. We establish a connection between the solution of the ergodic BSDE and the solution of an associated BSDE with random terminal time $\tau$ , defined as the hitting time of the positive recurrent stochastic factor V . The viewpoint based on BSDEs with random horizon yields a new characterization of the ergodic cost $\lambda$ which is a part of the solution of the eBSDEs. In particular, for a certain class of eBSDEs with quadratic generator, the Cole-Hopf transform leads to a semi-explicit representation of the solution as well as a new expression of the ergodic cost $\lambda$. The latter can be estimated with Monte Carlo methods. We also propose two new deep learning numerical schemes for eBSDEs, where the ergodic cost $\lambda$ is optimized according to a loss function at the random horizon $\tau$ or taking into account the whole trajectory. Finally, we present numerical results for different examples of eBSDEs and forward utilities along with the associated investment strategies.

Estimation of Systemic Shortfall Risk Measure using Stochastic Algorithms

Systemic risk measures were introduced to capture the global risk and the corresponding contagion effects that is generated by an interconnected system of financial institutions. To this purpose, two approaches were suggested. In the first one, systemic risk measures can be interpreted as the minimal amount of cash needed to secure a system after aggregating individual risks. In the second approach, systemic risk measures can be interpreted as the minimal amount of cash that secures a system by allocating capital to each single institution before aggregating individual risks. Although the theory behind these risk measures has been well investigated by several authors, the numerical part has been neglected so far. In this paper, we use stochastic algorithms schemes in estimating MSRM and prove that the resulting estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. We also test numerically the performance of these algorithms on several examples.

Multivariate Optimized Certainty Equivalent Risk Measures and their Numerical Computation

We present a framework for constructing multivariate risk measures that is inspired from univariate Optimized Certainty Equivalent (OCE) risk measures. We show that this new class of risk measures verifies the desirable properties such as convexity, monotonocity and cash invariance. We also address numerical aspects of their computations using stochastic algorithms instead of using Monte Carlo or Fourier methods that do not provide any error of the estimation.

Utility Maximization Problem with Uncertainty and a Jump Setting

We study a robust utility maximization problem in the unbounded case with a general penalty term and information including jumps. We focus on time consistent penalties and we prove that there exists an optimal probability measure solution of the robust problem. Then, we characterize the dynamic value process of our stochastic control problem as the unique solution of a Quadratic-Exponential BSDE.

Quasilinear Stochastic PDEs with two obstacles: Probabilistic approach

We prove an existence and uniqueness result for two-obstacle problem for quasilinear Stochastic PDEs (DOSPDEs for short). The method is based on the probabilistic interpretation of the solution by using the backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs for short).

Mean-Field Backward-Forward SDE with Jumps and Storage problem in Smart Grids

In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of a coupled Mean-Field Forward-Backward SDE system with Jumps. Then, we give an application in the field of storage problem in smart grids, studied in [4] in the case where the production of electricity is not predictable due, for example, to the changes in meteorological forecasts.

Exponential Quadratic BSDEs with infinite activity Jumps

In this paper, we study a Backward Stochastic Differential Equation with Jumps (BSDEJs in short) where the jumps have infinite activity. Following a forward approach based on Exponential Quadratic semimartingale, we prove the existence of solution of Quadratic BSDEJs with unbounded terminal condition and quadratic growth in z.

Large Deviation Principles of Obstacle Problems for Quasilinear Stochastic PDEs

In this paper, we present a sufficient condition for the large deviation criteria of Budhiraja, Dupuis and Maroulas for functionals of Brownian motions. We then establish a large deviation principle for obstacle problems of quasi-linear stochastic partial differential equations. It turns out that the backward stochastic differential equations will play an important role.

An Extended Mean Field Game for Storage in Smart Grids

We consider a stylized model for a power network with distributed local power generation and storage. This system is modeled as network connection a large number of nodes, where each node is characterized by a local electricity consumption, has a local electricity production (e.g. photovoltaic panels), and manages a local storage device. Depending on its instantaneous consumption and production rates as well as its storage management decision, each node may either buy or sell electricity, impacting the electricity spot price. The objective at each node is to minimize energy and storage costs by optimally controlling the storage device. In a non-cooperative game setting, we are led to the analysis of a non-zero sum stochastic game with $N$ players where the interaction takes place through the spot price mechanism. For an infinite number of agents, our model corresponds to an Extended Mean-Field Game (EMFG). In a linear quadratic setting, we obtain and explicit solution to the EMFG, we show that it provides an approximate Nash-equilibrium for $N$-player game, and we compare this solution to the optimal strategy of a central planner.

Zhang $L^2$-Regularity for the solutions of Backward Doubly Stochastic Differential Equations under globally Lipschitz continuous assumptions

We prove an $L^2$-regularity result for the solutions of Forward Backward Doubly Stochastic Differentiel Equations (FBDSDEs in short) under globally Lipschitz continuous assumptions on the coefficients. Therefore, we extend the well known regularity results established by Zhang (2004) for Forward Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDEs in short) to the doubly stochastic framework. To this end, we prove (by Malliavin calculus) a representation result for the martingale component of the solution of the F-BDSDE under the assumption that the coefficients are continuous in time and continuously differentiable in space with bounded partial derivatives. As an (important) application of our $L^2$-regularity result, we derive the rate of convergence in time for the (Euler time discretization based) numerical scheme for FBDSDEs proposed by Bachouch et al. (2016) under only globally Lipschitz continuous assumptions.

Corrigendum for "Second-order reflected backward stochastic differential equations" and "Second-order BSDEs with general reflection and game options under uncertainty"

The aim of this short note is to fill in a gap in our earlier paper [16] on 2BSDEs with reflections, and to explain how to correct the subsequent results in the second paper [15]. We also provide more insight on the properties of 2RBSDEs, in the light of the recent contributions [13, 23] in the so--called $G-$framework.

Quadratic Exponential Semimartingales and Application to BSDEs with jumps

In this paper, we study a class of Quadratic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (QBSDE in short) with jumps and unbounded terminal condition. We extend the class of quadratic semimartingales introduced by Barrieu and El Karoui (2013) in the jump diffusion model. The properties of these class of semimartingales lead us to prove existence result for the solution of a quadratic BSDEs.

Convex duality for stochastic differential utility

This paper introduces a dual problem to study a continuous-time consumption and investment problem with incomplete markets and stochastic differential utility. For Epstein-Zin utility, duality between the primal and dual problems is established. Consequently the optimal strategy of the consumption and investment problem is identified without assuming several technical conditions on market model, utility specification, and agent's admissible strategy. Meanwhile the minimizer of the dual problem is identified as the utility gradient of the primal value and is economically interpreted as the "least favorable" completion of the market.

Probabilistic interpretation for solutions of fully Nonlinear Stochastic PDEs

In this article, we propose a wellposedness theory for a class of second order backward doubly stochastic differential equation (2BDSDE). We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution under a Lipschitz type assumption on the generator, and we investigate the links between our 2BDSDEs and a class of parabolic fully nonLinear Stochastic PDes. Precisely, we show that the Markovian solution of 2BDSDEs provide a probabilistic interpretation of the classical and stochastic viscosity solution of fully nonlinear SPDEs.

Numerical Computation for Backward Doubly SDEs with random terminal time

In this article, we are interested in solving numerically backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs) with random terminal time tau. The main motivations are giving a probabilistic representation of the Sobolev's solution of Dirichlet problem for semilinear SPDEs and providing the numerical scheme for such SPDEs. Thus, we study the strong approximation of this class of BDSDEs when tau is the first exit time of a forward SDE from a cylindrical domain. Euler schemes and bounds for the discrete-time approximation error are provided.
