Subdwarfs and white dwarfs from the 2MASS, Tycho-2, XPM and UCAC3 catalogues

The photometry from 2MASS, UCAC3 and SuperCosmos catalogues together with the proper motions from the Tycho-2, XPM and UCAC3 catalogues are used to select the all-sky samples of 34 white dwarfs, 1996 evolved and 7769 unevolved subdwarfs candidates for R from 9 to 17 magnitude. The samples are separated from the main sequence with admixture less than 10% owing to the detailed analysis of the distribution of the stars in the different color index (CI) vs. reduced proper motion (RPM) diagrams for various latitudes with special attention to the estimation of admixtures in the samples and with Monte-Carlo simulation. It is shown that the XPM and UCAC3 have the same level of proper motion accuracy. Most of the selected stars has at least 6-band photometry with accuracy is proved to be better than 0.2. The multi-color photometry allows us to eliminate some admixtures and reveal some binaries. The empirical calibrations of absolute magnitude versus CI and RPM for Hipparcos stars give us photometric distances and 3D distribution for all the stars. Although the selection method and uneven distribution of the XPM and UCAC3 data provide noticeable biases the preliminary conclusions are made. The subdwarfs show some concentration to the galactic centre hemisphere with voids because of extinction in the Gould belt and galactic plane. Some yet unexplained overdensities of the evolved subdwarfs are seen in several parts of the sky. For 183 stars with radial velocities 3D motion and galactic orbits are calculated. For 56 stars with Fe/H collected from various sources we find the relations of the metallicity with CI, asymmetric drift velocity and orbital eccentricity. It is shown that most unevolved subdwarfs belong to the halo with the scale height of $8\pm1$ kpc and local mass density of halo subdwarfs of $2\cdot10^{-5} M\sun pc^{-3}$. Most evolved subdwarfs belong to the thick disk with the scale height of $1.25\pm0.1$ kpc. Main parameters of the selected stars are compiled into new SDWD catalogue for future investigations. Special attention should be paid to spectroscopic observations of these stars because 53% of the selected white dwarfs, 94% of evolved and 98% of unevolved subdwarfs are now classified for the first time whereas the existed spectral classification is wrong in many cases.

Multi-Frequency Synthesis of VLBI Images Using a Generalized Maximum Entropy Method

A new multi-frequency synthesis algorithm for reconstructing images from multi-frequency VLBI data is proposed. The algorithm is based on a generalized maximum-entropy method, and makes it possible to derive an effective spectral correction for images over a broad frequency bandwidth, while simultaneously reconstructing the spectral-index distribution over the source. The results of numerical simulations demonstrating the capabilities of the algorithm are presented.

Structure of the Radio Source 3C 120 at 8.4 GHz from VLBA+ Observations in 2002

Maps of the radio source 3C 120 obtained from VLBA+ observations at 8.4 GHz at five epochs in January - September 2002 are presented. The images were reconstructed using the maximum entropy method and the Pulkovo VLBImager software package for VLBI mapping. Apparent superluminal motions of the brightest jet knots have been estimated. The speeds of jet knots decreases with distance from the core, changing from 5.40+-0.48c $ to 2.00+-0.48c over 10 mas (where c is the speed of light) for a Hubble constant of 65 km/s/Mpc. This can be explained by interaction of the jet with the medium through which it propagates.

Reconstructing Images from Projections Using the Maximum-Entropy Method. Numerical Simulations of Low-Aspect Astrotomography

The reconstruction of images from a small number of projections using the maximum-entropy method (MEM) with the Shannon entropy is considered. MEM provides higher-quality image reconstruction for sources with extended components than the Hogbom CLEAN method, which is also used in low-aspect astrotomography. The quality of image reconstruction for sources with mixed structure containing bright, compact features embedded in a comparatively weak, extended base can be further improved using a difference-mapping method, which requires a generalization of MEM for the reconstruction of sign-variable functions. We draw conclusions based on the results of numerical simulations for a number of model radio sources with various morphologies.

Kinematics of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association

A fine structure related to the kinematic peculiarities of three components of the Scorpius-Centaurus association (LCC, UCL, and US) has been revealed in the UV-velocity distribution of Gould Belt stars. We have been able to identify the most likely members of these groups by applying the method of analyzing the two-dimensional probability density function of stellar UV velocities that we developed. A kinematic analysis of the identified structural components has shown that, in general, the center--of--mass motion of the LCC, UCL, and US groups follows the motion characteristic of the Gould Belt, notably its expansion. The entire Scorpius-Centaurus complex is shown to possess a proper expansion with an angular velocity parameter of 46+-8 km/s/kpc for the kinematic center with lo=-40 degrees and Ro=110 pc found. Based on this velocity, we have estimated the characteristic expansion time of the complex to be 21+-4 Myr. The proper rotation velocity of the Scorpius-Centaurus complex is lower in magnitude, is determined less reliably, and depends markedly on the data quality.

Analysis of the Velocity Field of F and G Dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood as a Function of Age

The space velocities from the catalog of Nordstrom et al. (2004) are used to trace variations of a number of kinematic parameters of single F and G dwarfs as a function of their age. The vertex deviation of disk stars increases from 7+- 1 to 15+-2 degrees as the mean age decreases from 4.3 to 1.5 Gyr. The two-dimensional velocity distributions in the UV, UW, and VW planes are analyzed. The evolution of the main peaks in the velocity distributions can be followed to an average age of approximately 9 Gyr. We find that: (1) in the distributions of the UV velocity components, stars of different types are concentrated toward several stable peaks (the Hyades, Pleiades, and Sirius Cluster), suggesting that the stars belonging to these formations did not form simultaneously; (2) the peak associated with the Hyades Cluster dominates in all age intervals; and (3) the Hyades peak is strongest for stars with an average age of 1.5 Gyr, suggesting that this peak contains a considerable fraction of stars from the Hyades cluster. The age dependences of the kinematic parameters exhibit a break near 4.5 Gyr, which can be explained as an effect of the different contributions of stars of the thin and thick disks. The Stromberg relation yields a solar LSR velocity of V_{\odot LSR} = (8.7, 6.2, 7.2)+- (0.5, 2.2, 0.8) km/s.

Gould Belt Kinematics on the Base of the Open Clusters and Ob-Associations

The kinematic parameters of the Gould Belt are redetermined using modern data on the motion of nearby young ($\log t<7.91$) open clusters, OB-associations and moving stellar groups. The modelling carried out shows that the residual velocities achieve the maximal values equal to -4 km s$^{-1}$ for rotation (in the direction of the Galactic rotation) and $+4$ km s$^{-1}$ for expansion, when the distance from the kinematic centre is about 300 pc. We assumed the following parameters of the Gould Belt centre: $l_\circ=128^\circ$ and $R_\circ=150$ pc. It is shown that the whole structure of the Gould Belt is moving relative to the local standard of rest with a velocity of $10.7\pm0.7$ km s$^{-1}$ in the direction towards $l=274\pm4^\circ$, $b=-1\pm3^\circ$. Using the rotation velocity, we obtained the virial estimation of the Gould Belt mass as $1.5\times 10^6 M_\odot$.

Investigation of Negative K-Effect Using the Osaca Catalogue

We created and are constantly updating the Orion Spiral Arm CAtalogue (OSACA) for stars with known coordinates, parallaxes, proper motions and radial velocities. It is shown that there is an effect of contraction appearing in motion of giants of A0--A5 spectral classes which attains a value of K=-13+-2 km/s/kpc. We try to link this effect to the periodic structure of residual velocity field of stars in the solar neighborhood, which is caused by spiral density waves.

The OSACA Database and a Kinematic Analysis of Stars in the Solar Neighborhood

We transformed radial velocities compiled from more than 1400 published sources, including the Geneva--Copenhagen survey of the solar neighborhood (CORAVEL-CfA), into a uniform system based on the radial velocities of 854 standard stars in our list. This enabled us to calculate the average weighted radial velocities for more than 25~000 HIPPARCOS stars located in the local Galactic spiral arm (Orion arm) with a median error of +-1 km/s. We use these radial velocities together with the stars' coordinates, parallaxes, and proper motions to determine their Galactic coordinates and space velocities. These quantities, along with other parameters of the stars, are available from the continuously updated Orion Spiral Arm CAtalogue (OSACA) and the associated database. We perform a kinematic analysis of the stars by applying an Ogorodnikov-Milne model to the OSACA data. The kinematics of the nearest single and multiple main-sequence stars differ substantially. We used distant (r\approx 0.2 kpc) stars of mixed spectral composition to estimate the angular velocity of the Galactic rotation -25.7+-1.2 km/s/kpc, and the vertex deviation,l=13+-2 degrees, and detect a negative K effect. This negative K effect is most conspicuous in the motion of A0-A5 giants, and is equal to K=-13.1+-2.0 km/s/kpc.

A High-Accuracy Method for the Removal of Point Sources from Maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background

A new method for removing point radio sources and other non-Gaussian noise is proposed as a means of improving the accuracy of estimates of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The main idea of the method is to reconstruct fluctuations of the CMB in places contaminated by such emission, while traditional methods simply exclude these regions from consideration, leading to the appearance of "holes" in the resulting maps. The fundamental possibility of reconstructing the CMB signal in such holes follows from the analytical properties of a function with a finite spatial spectrum (the Silk damping frequency). A two-dimensional median filter is used to localize the point radio sources. Results of simulations of the method for maps of modest size are presented. The efficiency of applying the method to reconstruct the CMB from data with limited resolution and contaminated by appreciable pixel noise is investigated. The fundamental possibility of applying the method to reconstruct the CMB distribution in the region of the Galaxy is also demonstrated.

A Solution to the Problem of Phaseless Mapping for a High-Orbit Space-Ground Radio Interferometer

We consider the problem of mapping with ultra-high angular resolution using a space-ground radio interferometer with a space antenna in a high orbit, whose apogee height exceeds the radius of the Earth by a factor of ten. In this case, a multielement interferometer essentially degenerates into a two-element interferometer. The degeneracy of the close-phase relations prevents the use of standard methods for hybrid mapping and self-calibration for the correct reconstruction of images. We propose a new phaseless mapping method based on methods for the reconstruction of images in the complete absence of phase information, using only the amplitudes of the spatial-coherence function of the source. In connection with this problem, we propose a new method for the reliable solution of the phase problem, based on optimizing information-carrying nonlinear functionals, in particular, the Shannon entropy. Results of simulations of mapping radio sources with various structures with ultra-high angular resolution in the framework of the RADIOASTRON mission are presented.

Phaseless VLBI mapping of compact extragalactic radio sources

The problem of phaseless aperture synthesis is of current interest in phase-unstable VLBI with a small number of elements when either the use of closure phases is not possible (a two-element interferometer) or their quality and number are not enough for acceptable image reconstruction by standard adaptive calibration methods. Therefore, we discuss the problem of unique image reconstruction only from the spectrum magnitude of a source. We suggest an efficient method for phaseless VLBI mapping of compact extragalactic radio sources. This method is based on the reconstruction of the spectrum magnitude for a source on the entire UV plane from the measured visibility magnitude on a limited set of points and the reconstruction of the sought-for image of the source by Fienup's method from the spectrum magnitude reconstructed at the first stage. We present the results of our mapping of the extragalactic radio source 2200 +420 using astrometric and geodetic observations on a global VLBI array. Particular attention is given to studying the capabilities of a two-element interferometer in connection with the putting into operation of a Russian-made radio interferometer based on Quasar RT-32 radio telescopes.

Nonlinear image processing based on optimization of generalized information methods

A range of nonlinear image reconstruction procedures based on extremizing the generalized Shannon entropy, Kullback-Leibler cross-entropy and Renyi information measures and proposed by the author in early papers is presented. The ``generalization'' assumes search for the solution over the space of real bipolar or complex functions. Such an approach allows, first, to reconstruct signals of any type and physical nature and, secondly, to decrease nonlinear intensity image distortions caused by measurement errors. All the elaborated procedures are contained in VLBI ``IMAGE'' program package developed in IAA RAS.

A differential method of maximum entropy

We consider a differential method of maximum entropy that is based on the linearity of Fourier transform and involves reconstruction of images from the differences of the visibility function. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated with respect to the recovery of source images with bright components against the background of a sufficiently weak extended base. The simulation results are given along with the maps of an extragalactic radio source 0059+581, which were obtained using the standard and differential methods of maximum entropy for three observation dates and show that the principle of differential mapping allows us to increase considerably the dynamic interval of images.

Experience of high resolution VLBI imaging using generalized maximum entropy method

The generalized maximum entropy method (GMEM) is a special modification of the standard maximum entropy method (MEM) which seeks solutions in the space of complex functions. In this work a reduced version of the GMEM intended for reconstructing real images with positive and negative values is used. As compared with the standard MEM, intended for the reconstruction of only non-negative images, the GMEM allows us to obtain higher-quality images with a much lower level of nonlinear distortions caused by errors in the data. Here, we present the results of the GMEM imaging of 36 selected extragalactic radio sources with a resolution of 0.3-0.5 mas on astrometric and geodetic VLBI observations at 8.2 GHz, obtained with a global array in the period from 1994-1996. In VLBI mapping practice this is the first experience of imaging with such a high resolution using maximum entropy technique. A differential maximum entropy method intended for increasing the dynamic range of images is demonstrated on the radio source 0059+581. In the case of unreliable `closure' phases, completely `phaseless' methods of mapping are recommended. Maps of two sources 0615+820 and 0642+214 are obtained using one such method.
