Shedding Flavor on Dark via Freeze-in: $U(1)_{B-3L_i}$ Gauged Extensions

We consider a singlet fermionic dark matter (DM) $χ$ in a gauged $U(1)_{B-3L_i}$ extension of the Standard Model (SM), with $i\in e\,,μ\,,τ$, and derive bounds on the allowed parameter space, considering its production via freeze-in mechanism. The DM communicates with the SM only through flavorful vector-portal $Z_\text{B3L}$ due to its non-trivial charge $x$ under $U(1)_{B-3L_{i}}$, which also guarantees the stability of the DM over the age of the Universe for $x\neq\{\pm 3/2,\pm 3\}$. Considering $Z_\text{B3L}$ to lie within the mass range of a few MeV up to a few GeV, we obtain constraints on the gauge coupling $g_\text{B3L}$ from the requirement of producing right relic abundance. Taking limits from various (present and future) experimental facilities, e.g., NuCal, NA64, FASER, SHiP into account, we show that the relic density allowed parameter space for the frozen in DM can be probed with $g_\text{B3L}\gtrsim 10^{-8}$ for both $m_χ<m_\text{ZB3L}/2$ and $m_χ\gtrsim m_\text{ZB3L}$, while $g_\text{B3L}\lesssim 10^{-8}$ remains mostly unconstrained. We also briefly comment on the implications of neutrino mass generation via Type-I seesaw and anomalous $(g-2)_μ$ in context with $B-3L_μ$ gauged symmetry.

Probing High Scale Dirac Leptogenesis via Gravitational Waves from Domain Walls

We propose a novel way of probing high scale Dirac leptogenesis, a viable alternative to canonical leptogenesis scenario where the total lepton number is conserved, keeping light standard model (SM) neutrinos purely Dirac. The simplest possible seesaw mechanism for generating light Dirac neutrinos involve heavy singlet Dirac fermions and a singlet scalar. In addition to unbroken global lepton number, a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry is imposed to forbid direct coupling between right and left chiral parts of light Dirac neutrino. Generating light Dirac neutrino mass requires the singlet scalar to acquire a vacuum expectation value (VEV) that also breaks the $Z_2$ symmetry, leading to formation of domain walls in the early universe. These walls, if made unstable by introducing a soft $Z_2$ breaking term, generate gravitational waves (GW) with a spectrum characterized by the wall tension or the singlet VEV, and the soft symmetry breaking scale. The scale of leptogenesis depends upon the $Z_2$-breaking singlet VEV which is also responsible for the tension of the domain wall, affecting the amplitude of GW produced from the collapsing walls. We find that most of the near future GW observatories will be able to probe Dirac leptogenesis scale all the way upto $10^{11}$ GeV.

Doubly peaked induced stochastic gravitational wave background : Testing baryogenesis from primordial black holes

Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) can facilitate the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry. We focus on ultra-low mass PBHs that briefly dominate the universe and evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis. We propose a novel test of this scenario by detecting its characteristic doubly peaked gravitational wave (GW) spectrum in future GW observatories. Here the first order adiabatic perturbation from inflation and from the isocurvature perturbations due to PBH distribution, source tensor perturbations in second-order and lead to two peaks in the induced GW background. These resonant peaks are generated at the beginning of standard radiation domination in the presence of a prior PBH-dominated era. This unique GW spectral shape would provide a smoking gun signal of non-thermal baryogenesis from evaporating PBHs, which is otherwise impossible to test in laboratory experiments due to the very high energy scales involved or the feeble interaction of the dark sector with the visible sector.

The Forward Physics Facility at the High-Luminosity LHC

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Scale Invariant FIMP Miracle

We study the freeze-in production of vector dark matter (DM) in a classically scale invariant theory, where the Standard Model (SM) is augmented with an abelian $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry that is spontaneously broken due to the non-zero vacuum expectation value (VEV) of a scalar charged under the $U(1)_X$. Generating the SM Higgs mass at 1-loop level, it leaves only two parameters in the dark sector, namely, the DM mass $m_X$ and the gauge coupling $g_X$ as independent, and supplement with a naturally light dark scalar particle. We show, for $g_X\sim\mathcal{O}\left(10^{-5}\right)$, it is possible to produce the DM X out-of-equilibrium in the early Universe, satisfying the observed relic abundance for $m_X\sim\mathcal{O}\left(\text{TeV}\right)$, which in turn also determines the scalar mixing angle $\sin θ\sim\mathcal{O}\left(10^{-5}\right)$. The presence of such naturally light scalar mediator with tiny mixing with the SM, opens up the possibility for the model to be explored in direct search experiment, which otherwise is insensitive to standard freeze-in scenarios. Moreover we show that even with such feeble couplings, necessary for the DM freeze-in, the scenario is testable in several light dark sector searches (e.g., in DUNE and in FASER-II), satisfying constraints from the observed relic abundance as well as big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). Particularly, we find, regions of the parameter space with $m_X$ $\gtrsim 1.8$ TeV are insensitive to direct detection probes but still can become accessible in lifetime frontier searches, courtesy to the underlying scale invariance of the theory.

On a novel evalutation of the hadronic contribution to the muon's $g-2$ from QCD

We evaluate the hadronic contribution to the $g-2$ of the muon by deriving the low-energy limit of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and computing in this way the hadronic vacuum polarization. The low-energy limit is a non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model that has all the parameters fixed from QCD, and the only experimental input used is the confinement scale that is known from measurements of hadronic physics. Our estimations provide a novel analytical alternative to the current lattice computations and we find that our result is close to the similar computation performed from experimental data. We also comment on how this analytical approach technique, in general, may provide prospective estimates for hadronic computations from dark sectors and its implication in BSM model-building in future.

Gravitational Wave Gastronomy

The symmetry breaking of grand unified gauge groups in the early Universe often leaves behind relic topological defects such as cosmic strings, domain walls, or monopoles. For some symmetry breaking chains, hybrid defects can form where cosmic strings attach to domain walls or monopoles attach to strings. In general, such hybrid defects are unstable, with one defect "eating" the other via the conversion of its rest mass into the other's kinetic energy and subsequently decaying via gravitational waves. In this work, we determine the gravitational wave spectrum from 1) the destruction of a cosmic string network by the nucleation of monopoles which cut up and "eat" the strings, 2) the collapse and decay of a monopole-string network by strings that "eat" the monopoles, 3) the destruction of a domain wall network by the nucleation of string-bounded holes on the wall that expand and "eat" the wall, and 4) the collapse and decay of a string-bounded wall network by walls that "eat" the strings. We call the gravitational wave signals produced from the "eating" of one topological defect by another gravitational wave gastronomy. We find that the four gravitational wave gastronomy signals considered yield unique spectra that can be used to narrow down the SO(10) symmetry breaking chain to the Standard Model and the scales of symmetry breaking associated with the consumed topological defects. Moreover, the systems we consider are unlikely to have a residual monopole or domain wall problem.

Shedding Light on Dark Matter and Neutrino Interactions from Cosmology

In $\rmΛ$CDM cosmology, Dark Matter (DM) and neutrinos are assumed to be non-interacting. However, it is possible to have scenarios, where DM-neutrino interaction may be present, leading to scattering of DM with neutrinos and annihilation of DM into neutrinos. We investigate the viability of such scenarios in the light of cosmological data by making use of the Planck 2018 dataset (high-l TT+TE+EE, low-l TT, low-l EE) and constrain these processes in the light of the same. We also discuss a viable particle DM model where DM-neutrino interaction is present, and map the constraints obtained to the parameter space of the model.

Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model correlation functions from QCD

We treat quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using a set of Dyson-Schwinger equations derived, in differential form, with the Bender-Milton-Savage technique. In this way, we are able to derive the low energy limit that assumes the form of a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with all the parameters properly fixed by the QCD Lagrangian and the determination of the mass gap of the gluon sector.

Mass Gap in Infinite Derivative Non-local Higgs: Dyson-Schwinger Approach

We investigate the non-perturbative degrees of freedom in the class of non-local Higgs theories that have been proposed as an ultraviolet completion 4-D Quantum Field Theory (QFT) generalizing the kinetic energy operators to an infinite series of higher derivatives inspired by string field theory. At the perturbative level, the degrees of freedom of non-local Higgs are the same of the local theory. We prove that, at the non-perturbative level, the physical spectrum of the Higgs mass is actually corrected from the "infinite number of derivatives" present in the action. The technique we use permits to derive the set of Dyson-Schwinger equations in differential form. This proves essentially useful when exact solutions to the local equations are known. We show that all the formalism of the local theory involving the Dyson-Schwinger approach extends quite naturally to the non-local case. Using these methods, the spectrum of non-local theories become accessible and predictable in the non-perturbative regimes. We calculate the N-point correlation functions and predict the mass-gap in the spectrum arising purely from the self-interaction and the non-local scale M. The mass gap generated gets damped in the UV and it reaches conformal limit. We discuss some implications of our result in particle physics and cosmology.

Non-local Non-Abelian Gauge Theory: Conformal Invariance and $β$-function

This paper focuses on extending our previous discussion of an Abelian U(1) gauge theory involving infinite derivatives to a non-Abelian SU(N) case. The renormalization group equation (RGEs) of the SU(N) gauge coupling is calculated and shown to reproduce the local theory $β$-function in the limit of the non-local scale M $\rightarrow \infty$. Interestingly, the gauge coupling stops its running beyond the scale $M$, approaching an asymptotically conformal theory.

Strongly Coupled String-inspired Infinite Derivative Non-local Yang-Mills: Diluted Mass Gap

We investigate the non-perturbative regimes in the class of non-Abelian theories that have been proposed as an ultraviolet completion 4-D Quantum Field Theory (QFT) generalizing the kinetic energy operators to an infinite series of higher-order derivatives inspired by string field theory. We prove that, at the non-perturbative level, the physical spectrum of the theory is actually corrected by the 'infinite number of derivatives' present in the action. We derive a set of Dyson-Schwinger equations in differential form, for correlation functions till two-points, the solution for which are known in the local theory. We obtain that just like in the local theory, the non-local counterpart displays a mass gap, depending also on the mass scale of non-locality, and show that it is damped in the deep UV reaching asymptotically the conformal limit. We point out some possible implications of our result in particle physics and cosmology and discuss aspects of non-local QCD-like scenarios. We end with some comments on the infinite-derivative non-local gravity which is quantum gravity approach to ghost-free, re-normalizable theories of gravity valid upto infinte ebergy scales in the UV.

Confinement and Renormalization Group Equations in String-inspired Non-local Gauge Theories

As an extension of the weak perturbation theory obtained in recent analysis on infinite-derivative non-local non-Abelian gauge theories motivated from p-adic string field theory, and postulated as direction of UV-completion in 4-D Quantum Field Theory (QFT), here we investigate the confinement conditions and $β-$function in the strong coupling regime. We extend the confinement criterion, previously obtained by Kugo and Ojima for the local theory based on the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) invariance, to the non-local theory, by using a set of exact solutions of the corresponding local theory. We show that the infinite-derivatives which are active in the UV provides finite contributions also in the infrared (IR) limit and provide a proof of confinement, granted by the absence of the Landau pole. The main difference with the local case is that the IR fixed point is moved to infinity. We also show that in the limit of the energy scale of non-locality $M \rightarrow \infty$ we reproduce the local theory results and see how asymptotic freedom is properly recovered.

Constraints on Tsallis Cosmology from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and Dark Matter Freeze-out

We consider Tsallis cosmology as an approach to thermodynamic gravity and derive the bound on the Tsallis parameter to be $β<2$ by using the constraints derived from the formation of the primordial light elements, Helium, Deuterium and Litium, from the observational data from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) which allows only a very tiny deviation from General Relativity (GR). Next we consider thermal dark matter (DM) freeze-out mechanism in Tsallis cosmological era and derive bounds on the Tsallis parameter from the observed DM relic abundance to be $1-β< 10^{-5}$.

Neutrino Invisible Decay at DUNE: a multi-channel analysis

The hypothesis of the decay of neutrino mass eigenstates leads to a substantial modification of the appearance and disappearance probabilities of flavor eigenstates. We investigate the impact on the standard oscillation scenario caused by the decay of the heaviest mass eigenstate $ν_3$ (with a mass $m_3$ and a mean life $τ_3$) to a sterile state in DUNE. We find that the lower bound of $5.1 \times 10^{-11}~s/eV$ at 90\% CL on the decay parameter $τ_3/m_3$ can be set if the Neutral Current data are included in the analysis, thus providing the best long-baseline expected limit so far. We also show that the $ν_τ$ appearance channel would give only a negligible contribution to the decay parameter constraints. Our numerical results are corroborated by analytical formulae for the appearance and disappearance probabilities in vacuum (which is a useful approximation for the study of the invisible decay model) that we have developed up to the second order in the solar mass splitting and to all orders in the decay factor $t/τ_3$.

Gravitational Waves from Fundamental Axion Dynamics

A totally asymptotically free QCD axion model, where all couplings flow to zero in the infinite energy limit, was recently formulated. A very interesting feature of this fundamental theory is the ability to predict some low-energy observables, like the masses of the extra fermions and scalars. Here we find and investigate a region of the parameter space where the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken quantum mechanically through the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. This results in an even more predictive framework: the axion sector features only two independent parameters (the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling). In particular, we show that the PQ phase transition is strongly first order and can produce gravitational waves within the reach of future detectors. The predictivity of the model leads to a rigid dependence of the phase transition (like its duration and the nucleation temperature) and the gravitational wave spectrum on the PQ symmetry breaking scale and the QCD gauge coupling.

Primordial Gravitational Wave Signals in Modified Cosmologies

Modified expansion rates in the early Universe prior to big bang nucleosynthesis are common in modified gravity theories, and can have a significant impact on the generation of dark matter, matter-antimatter asymmetry, primordial black holes and the primordial gravitational wave (PGW) spectrum. Here we study the PGW spectrum in modified gravity theories, in early Universe cosmology. In particular, we consider scalar-tensor and extradimensional scenarios, investigating the detection prospects in current and future GW observatories. For the scalar-tensor case, PGW could be potentially observed by laser interferometers operating in the high-frequency range, while for the extradimensional case they could be detected even at low frequencies with pulsar timing arrays. We find that data from the planned network of several GW detectors operating across various frequency ranges could be able to distinguish between various modified gravity scenarios.

On the Role of the $ν_τ$ Appearance in DUNE in Constraining Standard Neutrino Physics and Beyond

We consider the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance channel in the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) which offers a good statistics of the $ν_τ$ sample. In order to measure its impact on constraining the oscillation parameters, we consider several assumptions on the efficiency for $ν_τ$ charged-current signal events (with subsequent $τ\to e$ decay) and the related backgrounds and study the effects of various systematic uncertainties. Two different neutrino fluxes have been considered, namely a CP-violation optimized flux and a $ν_τ$ optimized flux. Our results show that the addition of the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ appearance channel does not reduce the current uncertainties on the standard 3-$ν$ oscillation parameters while it can improve in a significant way the sensitivity to the Non-Standard Interaction parameter $|ε_{μτ}|$ and to the new mixing angle $θ_{34}$ of a sterile neutrino model of the $3+1$ type.
